Logan's POV:

I always knew she was different.

Not just beautiful—though she was. Not just kind, or clever, or stubborn. Haley had something else. A stillness. A softness. A quiet strength that couldn’t be explained.

But what truly unsettled me, what left me awake some nights staring at the ceiling, was the way Lily looked at her.

Not like a nanny. Not like a guest.

Like someone she had been waiting for her whole life.

And maybe… maybe that’s why I started wondering. At first, it had been a passing thought. Then it turned into late nights reviewing timelines in my head. Could she have had Lily? Was there any overlap in our lives?

Of course not.

We’d never met before. She came into our lives out of nowhere.

And yet… how did she do it?

Teams of therapists, behavioral specialists, speech experts—none of them could get Lily to eat properly. To laugh. To speak.

But Haley? One hug, one shared bowl of soup, and Lily opened up.

Like she recognized her.

The apartment felt too quiet when I got back from my mother’s place. The lights were off, the hallway dim, and everything seemed still—like the air was holding its breath. I slipped off my shoes slowly, careful not to wake anyone. Lily was already asleep in her room. I peeked in, just to check. She was curled up under her pink blanket, hugging her stuffed bunny, her soft breathing barely audible.I didn’t go to my room. I didn’t want to lie awake staring at the ceiling again. I needed air. I needed noise. I needed to feel like myself, even if only for a few hours.I pulled out my phone and sent a quick message to Logan.Me: I’ll be back late. Don’t wait up.No explanation. Just that. I left the apartment and walked into the night. The sky outside was a deep gray-blue, not completely dark yet. The wind was cool against my skin, brushing through my hair like a whisper. My chest still felt heavy—tight from the things my mother had said. I could still see Jordan’s eyes, wide with fear as

On the way back from Ricardo’s boutique, I pretended not to have heard what he said to Logan.I didn’t want to think about it. I didn’t want to accept the fact that Logan’s mother—just like Sebastian’s world—would never truly accept someone like me. A divorced woman. A mother. A former nanny.Maybe I had always been that—a passing person in their fancy lives. Someone useful, but never permanent.“Haley,” Logan said gently from the passenger seat. “Are you okay?”“I’m fine,” I replied, staring out the window. He didn’t ask more. Maybe he knew I wasn’t ready to talk. Maybe he had his own thoughts to deal with. When we got home, Lily bounced into the living room with her sparkly hair clips still on, humming the tune Ricardo had played on the speakers earlier. I kissed her forehead and hugged her tightly.Logan stood nearby, watching us with quiet eyes. I could feel his gaze, heavy and searching, but I didn’t meet it.Then, my phone buzzed.Mom.I hesitated before answering. “Hello?”“Hal

That’s how it was going to be.I didn’t need anything fancy. I had Lily. I had my paints. Even if I wasn’t exactly selling paintings or booked for gallery shows, it was something. My own thing. A quiet dream I could hold onto.Life wasn’t perfect. Far from it. But for once, it felt… manageable. Peaceful. And peaceful was good.Last night, I slept deeply. No tears, no tossing around. Just Lily breathing softly beside me and the weight of the past slowly sliding off my shoulders.Until morning came.I was just pulling the covers over my head when I heard a knock at the door.“Haley.” Logan’s voice floated in, smooth but firm. “Get up. We’re going to see Ricardo.”I groaned loudly into my pillow.“Nooooo,” I said like a dying whale.I peeked out to see him standing in the doorway in a crisp white shirt tucked into dark slacks. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, exposing his forearms, and his hair was still damp from the shower, tousled and somehow unfairly perfect. He looked like a m

I got in the car with Lily, trying hard to keep my face calm, but my hands were shaking slightly as I held the steering wheel. I didn’t want her to see how upset I was. She looked up at me from the back seat, her small face curious but quiet.“Aunt Haley,” she said gently, “are you okay?”I nodded. “I just need to make a phone call, sweetie. Can you play with your doll for a bit?”She nodded and took out her favorite toy from her backpack. I pulled out my phone and stared at the screen for a second before pressing Sebastian’s name.He answered on the third ring.“Haley,” he said, his voice already heavy with sarcasm. “What now? Don’t you have your billionaire boyfriend and your perfect little daughter to look after?”I blinked in disbelief. “Excuse me?”“You heard me,” he said. “You left. You made your choice. Why do you suddenly care so much now?”I clenched my jaw. “Don’t turn this around on me. I care because Jordan is my son. And I just heard from his teacher that he’s been hurtin

The supermarket was bustling with activity as I stood in line at the checkout, my mind elsewhere. The events of the past few days replayed in my head, especially the encounter with the woman in the Chanel suit. Was I stupid to turn him down? Logan was offering me something steady. Safe. I wouldn’t have to carry all this alone anymore. But wasn’t that the point? I wanted to stop waiting for someone else to fix everything for me. I wanted to be strong enough to fix it myself."Ma’am?"The cashier’s voice pulled me out of my spiral. I blinked."Sorry," I muttered, fumbling for my phone to tap my card. "Just distracted."She smiled politely, handing me the receipt. "No worries. Have a good day!"I paid quickly and grabbed the bag of groceries. Outside, the wind tugged at my hair, and the sun felt a little too bright. I checked the time. It was nearly pickup hour. I needed to head to Lily’s school. As I pulled into the school parking lot, my stomach knotted. The woman in the Chanel suit fr

The room was quiet except for the soft ticking of the clock on the wall.I sat on the small sofa in Logan’s study, my fingers nervously twisting together. Logan stood near the tall window, his arms crossed as if he’d been thinking for a long time. Then he spoke, his voice low but firm.“Haley,” he said. “I think we should get married.”I looked up in shock, caught completely off guard. “What… what did you say?”He turned, meeting my gaze head-on. “I want you to marry me.”My heart pounded in my chest. “Logan… why?”He didn’t pause. “For Lily.”Silence fell like a hammer between us.He stepped closer, his expression unreadable but serious. “You saw what happened, Haley. Her condition is too fragile. She’s already experienced too much instability. She needs something permanent. Something solid.”“You mean… us?” I asked quietly.“Yes,” he said. “I’m not talking about some romantic fairytale. I’m talking about security. You and me building a life she can rely on.”I stared at him, my hear
