The ride back from the store was quiet.

Lily sat in the back seat humming, playing with the small plush toy we had picked up. Logan drove, his eyes fixed on the road. I sat beside him, hands in my lap, still feeling the sting from earlier—both the physical one on my cheek and the heavier one I couldn’t name.

I couldn’t bring myself to look at him.

Every time I tried, something inside me clenched. Maybe it was guilt, or maybe fear. He had stepped in for me, defended me in front of someone from my past—and not mildly, but fiercely. Like I mattered. Like I wasn’t invisible.

But I hadn’t thanked him properly. I hadn’t even talked to him.

Maybe I should. I decided I would after dinner.

When we got home, Lily went off to watch cartoons, and I helped Logan plate dinner. The air between us was normal on the surface—small pleasantries, little smiles—but under it was a tension that hadn’t been there before. Like we were both waiting for the other to say something first.

Halfway through the meal

The room was quiet except for the soft ticking of the clock on the wall.I sat on the small sofa in Logan’s study, my fingers nervously twisting together. Logan stood near the tall window, his arms crossed as if he’d been thinking for a long time. Then he spoke, his voice low but firm.“Haley,” he said. “I think we should get married.”I looked up in shock, caught completely off guard. “What… what did you say?”He turned, meeting my gaze head-on. “I want you to marry me.”My heart pounded in my chest. “Logan… why?”He didn’t pause. “For Lily.”Silence fell like a hammer between us.He stepped closer, his expression unreadable but serious. “You saw what happened, Haley. Her condition is too fragile. She’s already experienced too much instability. She needs something permanent. Something solid.”“You mean… us?” I asked quietly.“Yes,” he said. “I’m not talking about some romantic fairytale. I’m talking about security. You and me building a life she can rely on.”I stared at him, my hear

A few days had passed since that terrifying incident with Lily. My heart still weighed heavy with guilt, knowing that her condition had finally stabilized only to worsen again after Jordan's words. Lily was a delicate soul, and the weight of those careless comments seemed to have cut deeper than I expected.I had always tried to shield her from the harshness of the world, but despite all that I was failing miserably.I kept hoping Jordan had fully understood my actions—understood that Sebastian and I were divorced for good, but it seemed like he, just like Sebastian, thought my departure was temporary. I knew I had to find a way to talk to him about this, to make him understand once and for all.I sat in the living room, quietly waiting, when Logan finally came out of his study, his face set in a calm, composed expression."How is she?" I asked, my voice full of concern, hoping Lily had calmed down after the whole ordeal.Logan nodded, his usual stoic demeanor not betraying the tensio

The late afternoon sun filtered lazily through the tall windows of the café. The bell on the café door rang as Sebastian, Logan, and Lily walked in. Her gaze moved over Jordan, who was beaming now, then settled back on me again. Something flickered across her face. Hurt. Maybe betrayal. That look made the air thicken. Then she turned—and ran."Lily!" Logan called out, his voice sharp with panic. Chairs scraped. Everyone jumped to their feet, but I was the first out the door.I saw her.Running straight into the road.A car came around the corner fast—too fast. Horn blaring. Brakes screeching.Everything slowed.I ran. Without thinking about anything else and without hesitating, I rushed out.I grabbed the back of Lily’s jacket and yanked with all the strength I had. We tumbled to the sidewalk just as the car whooshed past, the driver shouting something I couldn’t hear over the blood pounding in my ears.Lily trembled in my arms. Her face was pale, her breathing shallow.“Oh, baby,” I

I stood outside the preschool gates, feeling like an outsider. My fingers clutched my bag tighter, knuckles white, and my heart wouldn’t stop pounding.I felt like I was on the outside of a world I once belonged to.Would he even want to see me?The last time I picked Jordan up, he hugged me so tight I could barely breathe. His little arms wrapped around my neck, his breath warm against my skin as he whispered, “Don’t go again.” And I’d left anyway. I told myself it was what I needed, that space was necessary. That I had to heal before I could be the mother he deserved. But now, I wasn’t sure he’d even look at me.“Are you Jordan’s mom?” a soft voice asked beside me.I turned quickly, startled. A preschool teacher with kind eyes and a warm smile stood beside me, her clipboard tucked under her arm.“Yes,” I answered, my voice coming out smaller than I intended. It trembled at the edges, like an apology.“He’s finishing snack time. You can come inside if you’d like,” she offered.I nodd

The elevator hummed softly as we ascended, the air between Logan and me thick with something unspoken. It wasn’t uncomfortable—just charged. I stole glances at him when I thought he wasn’t looking, admiring the strong set of his jaw, the way his suit hugged his broad shoulders, the way his hands stayed tucked in his pockets, confident, unbothered. When the doors opened onto the executive floor, I was about to step out when a young woman entered abruptly. She paused, blinking as her gaze flicked from me to Logan.“Excuse me,” she said sweetly, though the tilt of her head hinted at something else. “Are you Mr. Hartwell’s wife?”The question landed like a thud. I blinked, caught off guard. My mouth opened, but nothing came out. I looked up at Logan instinctively, but he hadn’t moved, expression unreadable.“I’m Lily’s caregiver,” I answered finally, steadying my voice.“Oh,” she said with a faint smirk. “So... you’re the boss’s special friend, then?”Before I could even begin to process

Under Logan's arrangement, I stepped into his company's towering headquarters for the first time. I did not want to come here as I was scared to draw while people judge me but Logan said that, "You are too perfect to be judged. My company would love to have you on board."His words caused all the insecurities to vanish away and here I am, standing in his company. The sleek marble floors and high glass walls made me feel small. Everything here gleamed, polished, perfect, intimidating. People in designer suits moved with purpose, tapping away at their tablets or holding quiet conversations near the elevators. And there I was, in my soft blue sweater and jeans, holding a tablet and a thermos shaped like a cartoon bear.Logan smiled when he saw me from his office door. “Right on time.”“I was early,” I admitted, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. “Your employees looked at me like I wandered into the wrong building.” I mean, I have been here in past as well. But they did not think of
