Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
"You can apply for the national award with some other academic achievement. Why must you insist on going after this one?" Mom questioned me.

Staring at her, I replied, "Because this award will give me the biggest edge. You're afraid I'll get in Jeremy's way, Mom, but even if I back out of it, do you really think the other candidates will step aside for him, too? Everyone should just compete based on their own merits."

"Don't give me that nonsense!" Mom slammed her hand on the desk. "I know that it's an award that's given out based on individual merit, but I can't accept the fact that you're insisting on competing against Jem, too!"

That caught me off guard.

"You're Jem's older brother, Nate. He'll be very sad if you go up against him, too."

I let out a bitter laugh. "Are you really saying that out of concern for him, Mom, or for your own reputation?"

Mom stiffened.

"Jeremy's parents and grandparents were all prominent artists. He's also the orphan of your good friend. Everyone in the industry knows about him and his relationship with us.

"If he's the one who takes the spotlight, everyone will know that you, his adoptive mother, are just as worthy of praise and respect as his family. You think I don't know that?"

Mom's face went pale.

Truth be told, I had only found out not long ago myself. I'd overheard a conversation Mom and Dad had in the study. They'd sighed about it, but they still said, "Even though it's unfair to Nate, once word gets out, it'll bring even more prestige to the family."

Chuckling bitterly, I continued, "Every single one of you keeps talking about wanting prestige and for the family to rise through the ranks. Well, the four of you have managed to make yourselves look good in front of the public, but what about me?

"Are you saying I deserve to be treated like this? Am I not a member of this family, too?"

Without warning, she slapped me in the face.

Mom looked at me as though I had lost my mind. "What kind of ridiculous assumptions are you making now?"

She grabbed her bag and marched toward the door, seemingly in a fit of rage. However, to me, it looked more like she was running away.

"I can't believe I raised such an ingrate!"

Professor Graham received a warning from my parents, but she ignored it. She continued to aid me in my entry for the science and technology award.

However, before long, all of our laboratory equipment suppliers breached their contracts. Without the equipment, we couldn't conduct our experiments, let alone apply for the award.

Professor Graham called in every favor she had and managed to borrow the equipment for me. But the very next day, her colleagues and friends all came back and took their equipment away.

A few of them even told her they wanted to end their friendship with her. One of them hemmed and hawed for a while before dropping a hint.

"It's not that we want to do this. It's just that a major investor has put the word out, and a lot of our projects rely on funding from him… You know what it's like…"

He gave us a meaningful look.

Professor Graham and I silently stepped aside and let them take their equipment.

It was someone who not only had the financial means but already had active funding partnerships with these people.

That could only be my father.

I clenched my fists. "It's fine. We'll do it ourselves."

Professor Graham and I bought the components ourselves, and it wasn't long before I'd basically assembled the equipment myself.

On the day I completed my experiments and confirmed the results, I posted about it online.

Mom swiftly called me. "Must you insist on going up against your own family? Against Jem?"

Before I could say anything, I heard Wendy's voice coming from the other end as well. "Jem's experiments failed, and he hasn't eaten all day. Why are you such a bastard? Is your biggest goal in life to steal other people's things?"

Just before I could hang up, Mom snapped at me, "Nate! You're going to withdraw your entry and delete that post on social media! Got it?"

I simply ended the call.

It never occurred to me that Mom would show up on campus the next day. Everyone was stunned.

"Professor Lloyd? The one who's the foremost authority in her field? Goodness me! She even refused a tenure position with the top university in our country! I can't believe she's here to visit a small university like ours."

I sneered. "They've got one foot in the grave. Who cares what they say?"Professor Graham looked at the scars on my face and couldn't help frowning. "Look at you… Are you really going to let them do this to you?"I shook my head. "Don't worry, Professor Graham. What's stolen will always come back. In fact, they'll have to pay it back with interest."Soon, all four of them suffered the backlash from their actions.Whitney was in the middle of an interview when, all of a sudden, lesions broke out all across her face, much to the horror of everyone else present. The interview was broadcast live, so quite a number of viewers had a huge fright as well.A lot of fans claimed they'd never seen anything like it, not even in a horror movie. They said they were having nightmares at night. Many of them immediately stopped being her fans and even turned against her.Wendy suddenly lost her voice during a concert. She clutched her throat, her face turning purple as she struggled to breathe. T

Elias shook his head. "To forcibly alter a person's fate is an act of defiance against the flow of nature. In doing so, I will suffer a backlash of equal proportion. No one other than your son would've ever done something like this."My parents' eyes immediately reddened. "What about him? Will he be affected, too?""Apart from your adopted son, your biological son is the only one in this family with a favorable fate. Once he leaves the family, he will no longer have to protect you guys at his own expense, which means he'll be able to enjoy the fortuitous fate he was meant to have," Elias explained. My parents couldn't believe it."Then... What about Jem?""His fate is even better than your son's.""How is that possible? He lost both his parents at such a young age! He's had to survive on the kindness of others instead."Elias laughed. "He descends from a prominent family of artists and benefits from their legacy. Even though he lost his parents, four people who are completely un

Wendy immediately stopped Mom, saying, "If he wants to cut ties with us, so be it! Does he think I don't know what his game is? All we have to do is ignore him. He'll come crawling back on his own in a few days."Whitney nodded. "Exactly. We can just make it up to him with a birthday celebration later. But right now, what matters most is Jem's birthday party."Wendy huffed before adding, "It's just as well that we use this opportunity to teach him some humility. Look at him! Why's he acting like we need to thank him for the careers that we built ourselves? He's acting like the whole world is indebted to him."…I threw myself into my research work at the laboratory, shutting out everything around me. Once my research article was accepted by a top-tier academic journal, Professor Graham sent me a bit of gossip."Have you gone home lately? I think you should stay away from them for the time being."I quickly checked the link she sent me. As it turned out, in the week since I declar

A stinging slap cracked across my cheek.Whitney glared at me. "Did they hit you in the head so hard that you've gone mad? Why are you ruining Jem's birthday party with your deranged fit!"Wendy was outraged as well. "You ruined the cake! We spent days going through our options before picking out the one Jem likes best!"Dad frowned at me. "Jem rarely finds something he likes this much. Can't you act like a decent person for once?"Mom gently comforted Jeremy before shooting me a cold glare.Whitney grabbed me and demanded, "Apologize to Jem now!"I looked at the good luck charm hanging from her neck. She was supposed to have been disfigured when she was 20 years old. However, thanks to the charm, not only did she not lose her looks, but she even became more beautiful than ever. She was known in the industry for being an incomparable beauty.I yanked the charm right off Whitney's neck and threw it onto the floor, stomping on it for good measure."Nathan!"Ignoring her, I cont

"She's my role model! I chose this major because of her! I'm going to ask for her autograph!" someone exclaimed.I stood among the crowd, staring at Mom in shock. She had Jeremy with her, and the two of them were the center of attention. Her gaze met mine, and her expression turned cold. She swiftly looked away.Following her visit to the campus, it was time to choose the winners for the science and technology award. Even though my research work was the most innovative and had the most academic value, I failed to make the cut.I didn't even get an honorable mention.Professor Graham sighed."Actually, when Professor Lloyd came by the campus, she took Jeremy out to dinner with the judges. Considering her standing in the world of academia, who would refuse to do her a favor?"The truth finally dawned on me, and I let out a bitter laugh.I was on my way back to campus when a few cars abruptly pulled up in front of me."You're Whitney's brother, aren't you?""Oh, the whole fan cl
