Dylan froze for three full seconds before my words sank in.

He grabbed my hand, his fingers trembling.

"Do you mean it?"

I lowered my eyes and pulled my hand out of his. "I mean it."

The bedroom door flew open. My father, Vittorio Leone, the current Don of the Leone family, hurried in with my mother, Lucia Leone. Tears were already spilling down my mother's cheeks.

"Aria, I knew you wouldn't abandon your sister!"

My father put a "voluntary" donor consent form in my hands, as if he were afraid I'd change my mind at any second.

"Sign it as soon as you can. I need the hospital to prepare for the surgery."

My whole family looked at me with pleading eyes.

I took the pen my mother handed me and slowly signed my name: Aria Leone.

Once I'd signed, all three of them sighed with relief, overjoyed that Sofia would be saved.

The tension that had hung over the house finally lifted. I was no longer the cold, selfish villain.

For three months, my mother had cried in front of me every day, telling me how Enzo had once taken a bullet meant for my father and how the family would always owe Sofia a life.

My father had coldly warned me that the entire mafia alliance would look down on a selfish daughter of the Leone family.

Dylan had even frozen all my bank cards. He said the family had to cut back to pay for Sofia's medical bills. I had to get a job just to pay my college tuition.

They used guilt, shame, and cold indifference to back me into a corner with no way out.

Dylan couldn't wait. He snatched the papers out of my hand and immediately called Sofia with the good news. "Sofia! She signed! You're going to live!"

After he hung up, he was breathing hard with excitement.

He took three deep breaths before he came back to the bed and patted my shoulder.

"Don't worry. I'll find the best doctors in all of Europe. Nothing is going to go wrong."

I looked up and met his eyes. Tears welled up, but I wouldn't let them fall.

"And if something does go wrong?"

My brother frowned. "That's impossible. You've been in the hospital so many times, and you've always come through just fine."

Just then, his phone rang again, and Sofia's weak, gasping voice came through. "Dylan, I suddenly feel so sick..."

My brother's expression changed in an instant, and he turned to leave. "I'll be right there!"

My parents hurried after him, and no one noticed that my face had gone deathly pale.

Once they were gone, I couldn't hold it in anymore. I leaned over and threw up a mouthful of blood.

My vision began to darken. Before I passed out, I used the last of my strength to knock over the vase on my nightstand and make some noise.

When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

Matteo looked at me gravely, my test results in his hand.

"Ms. Leone, didn't you read yesterday's test results? Exhaustion and the side effects of your medication have caused severe bleeding in your digestive tract. With your clotting disorder, your condition is critical.

"I strongly recommend immediate exploratory surgery to stop the bleeding. If it continues, it will soon become life-threatening."

I asked quietly, "If you stop the bleeding and I then have an organ removed, what are my chances of surviving?"

The doctor was silent for a long time. "Less than ten percent."

"Then don't bother."

Dylan had found the new drug through other doctors. The only difference between it and my usual medication was that it had very few side effects on the kidneys.

He wanted a perfect, brand-new kidney for Sofia. He didn't care how the new drug interacted with my other medication or what it did to me.

I sent the doctor away, picked up my phone, and called Dylan.

But when the call connected, I heard my mother's excited voice. "Sofia, eat a little more. You'll have to fast before your surgery the day after tomorrow!

"Don't be scared. Praise God! The surgery is going to work!"

I quietly hung up.

By now, they had to know I'd passed out, but not one of them had come to see me.

My phone buzzed. Sofia had sent me a photo.

It showed my parents and Dylan gathered around her bed. Underneath, she'd written:

"Aria, I'll live on in your place as the daughter of the Leone family."

Once they were ready, she carried them on a plate through the huge mansion, looking for Aria."Aria, my baby girl, I baked you cookies. Lying on the operating table, Sofia burst into tears. She couldn't believe Dylan, who had always given her everything she wanted, had just told them to let her die.Dylan carefully gathered Aria's cold body into his arms. As he passed Sofia's bed, she timidly reached out with her right hand and caught hold of his clothes."Dylan, it hurts so much. I don't want to die..."Dylan stopped.Sofia's hopes rose. But when she met Dylan's eyes, the cold hatred in them made her tremble. He looked at her as if she were an enemy, the one who had killed the person he loved most.Dylan's voice was frighteningly low. "You're the one who secretly took Aria's blood and had it tested for a match. You're the one who said only Aria could save you!"She died for you, and you're not even grateful. I finally see you for what you are, Sofia. She was your sister, but that means nothing to you. All you care about is staying alive!"You were determined to live, even if it cost Aria her life! You make me sick!"S

Matteo's words exploded down the narrow hallway. The smile froze on Lucia's face. "Dead?" she repeated under her breath. In a flash, Dylan pressed a black pistol to Matteo's forehead, the veins at his temples bulging. "What the hell are you talking about? Half an hour ago she was still talking to me, asking if she was going to be okay!"Say one more word of that crap, and I'll send you to meet God!"Matteo's legs went weak with fear. "Her condition had already worsened drastically because of the new medication's side effects," he stammered. "Without her usual medication to keep her stable, the chances of a successful surgery were low to begin with!"A little over ten minutes after we gave her the anesthesia, she started vomiting blood uncontrollably. It was coming from her nose, her eyes, her ears. We couldn't stop it!"Matteo quickly had his assistant hand the Leone family Aria's recent test reports and treatment records. The doctor's words cut into Dylan like a knife.Dylan's gun hit

An hour before the surgery, the whole family was gathered around Sofia's bed.My father held her hand and reassured her while my mother stroked her hair and wiped away tears.Dylan was off to one side, asking the doctor if Sofia's incision would hurt after surgery. He also wanted to know if they could make it smaller, since an ugly scar would upset her.A nurse wheeled me to the operating room doors with tubes attached to my body. When my mother saw me, she rushed over. "Sofia says she shouldn't have gotten angry at you when she's the one taking your kidney," she said urgently. "She's crying so hard she's about to faint. Could you go tell her you don't mind?"Don't make her go into surgery feeling guilty, okay?"I lay there with an oxygen mask over my face, staring blankly at the ceiling.Sofia came out of her room, supported by my brother and father. She looked at me with red-rimmed eyes. "Aria, I know you resent me. I know you don't want to give me your kidney."But finding a match t

That night, Matteo came to tell me there wasn't enough money in my account to cover my usual medication for the night and the following day.I froze. The mighty Leone family was suddenly too broke to pay for my medication? My father sat on the couch drinking whiskey and didn't even look up.I reminded him, "Dad, there's not enough money for my medical bills."My father frowned and set down his glass. "The doctor said taking too much of that medication could affect your kidneys."Just tough it out until after the surgery."I clutched the blanket, my breathing quickening. "Without that medication, I won't even have a ten-percent chance of surviving tomorrow!"My father's expression darkened, his eyes hardening. "Aria, can't you think about your sister for once?"At a time like this, you're still trying to scare her! You've been on that medication for years. Skipping it once won't make a difference. It won't be as bad as you say!"I wanted to shout back at him.But just then, Sofia called

Early the next morning, my mother walked into my hospital room with a batch of freshly baked chocolate cookies.I smelled that familiar sweetness and forced myself to sit up.When I was little, my mother's chocolate cookies were my favorite thing in the world. Every time I came to the hospital for a clotting factor infusion, she'd bring a batch and stay with me.Back then, she used to kiss my forehead tenderly and tell me I was the Leone family's most precious jewel. Now she stood more than three feet away from me and asked, "Have you seen Sofia's necklace? It was your grandmother's. It's supposed to keep Sofia safe during surgery."I pushed down the ache in my chest. "No."My mother frowned. "You must have it. Sofia came to see you this morning, and when she got back, she couldn't find it."Suspecting I'd hidden Sofia's necklace, my mother set the cookies on the table, threw back my blanket, and searched the bed carefully.Once she'd patted me down from head to toe, she started rummag
