Chapter 3

Author: Liora Z
One second. Two.

Silence.

No screams. No pleading.

The huge master bedroom was completely silent.

There was no one there. The bed wasn't even made. No mattress.

The walk-in closet was cavernous. Empty. Not a single thread left behind.

The manic grin on Caleb's face froze.

"Ava?!"

Panic flashed in his eyes. He stumbled into the bathroom, lighter still in hand, like a cornered rat. Then he scrambled back out, kicking open the doors to the kids' rooms.

All empty.

The tomb he was so ready to set ablaze... was nothing but an empty shell.

"Come out! Where the hell are you?! Ava!!"

He was screaming at nothing. A mad dog, smashing the empty closets to pieces.

I watched him lose his mind on the screen. I set down my wine. And I pressed the talk button on the console.

At the same time, the 80-inch screen on the bedroom wall flickered to life.

The cold, white light of the screen illuminated his face. Streaked with soot and sweat.

There I was, on the screen.

Sitting on a sofa hundreds of miles away, looking down at him.

"Looking for someone, darling?"

My voice wasn't loud. But in the empty house, it echoed. Sharp and clear.

Caleb whipped around. He stared at the screen, his eyes wide with a new kind of terror. "You're not here?! Where are you?!"

"Enjoying the show," I said. I leaned back in my chair and tilted my chin at him.

"You tricked me! This was a setup!" He lunged at the screen. He pulled out his gun and aimed it at my head. The veins in his forehead were throbbing.

"You brought this on yourself. Don't blame me," I said, my voice like ice. I was going to tear away every last one of his excuses. "You got fired for cheating, so you blame your boss. Your mistress robbed you, so you call her a bitch. You turned into a pathetic loser, so you came to burn your family. Just to feel like a man."

"Shut up!" His hand, holding the gun, was shaking.

"Stop playing the victim, Caleb. The poor father with no other choice. You never loved our children. You're just a pathetic narcissist who can't stand to see anyone else happy."

"I said, SHUT UP!!!"

I'd hit the raw nerve.

His eyes went wild.

He completely snapped.

He hurled the lighter out into the hallway.

"You fucking bitch! You think you can trick me? I'll burn this whole place down!"

WHOOSH.

The gasoline in the hall exploded into a wall of fire. Flames licked the ceiling.

The look of triumph on Caleb's face lasted for a split second. Then it melted into pure horror.

He'd forgotten. In his rush to trap us, he'd poured all the gasoline right outside the bedroom door.

Now the fire had cut off his only way out.

He had trapped himself.

Hot, black smoke poured into the room. He started choking, coughing violently. Tears and snot streamed down his face.

"Help me! Ava! The door system! Open the doors! Please!"

The man who wanted to burn us all alive just a moment ago. Now he was on the floor. Pounding the walls. Begging me to save him.

I watched him squirming on the floor like a maggot. A cold laugh escaped my lips.

"You lit this fire for us, Caleb," I said. "Now you get to enjoy it all by yourself."

Flames began to creep into the bedroom, catching on the carpet.

Caleb completely lost it.

He scrambled to the balcony.

He grabbed a chair and smashed the glass door.

And then, screaming, he jumped from the second floor into the blizzard below.

He landed with a thud.

He made a deep crater in the three-foot-deep snow. He coughed and sputtered, trying to crawl out.

And that's when he heard it.

The deafening thwump-thwump-thwump of helicopter rotors.

Three Aspen SWAT helicopters cut through the storm, hovering over the chalet.

Blinding searchlights sliced through the darkness.

They pinned him in a brilliant white circle.

All around him, figures rose from the snow. Dozens of them.

SWAT officers in white winter camouflage.

The next second, his chest and forehead lit up with dozens of red dots. Laser sights.

"POLICE! GET DOWN ON THE GROUND! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD, NOW!"

The command boomed from a loudspeaker, echoing through the mountains.

Caleb crumpled into the snow.

He stared down at the red dots covering his body.

The gun slipped from his hand.
