Even before this, when Ethan said he was putting Sophie in charge of planning the wedding, I had felt uneasy.

The wedding was one of the most important moments of my life.

Every prominent mafia family would be sending representatives.

Reporters would line both sides of the red carpet, cameras ready.

Even the slightest mishap would become a joke across the entire circle.

I could not let anything go wrong that day.

But Richard and Victoria both sided with Sophie.

They said I didn't trust my sister, didn't trust my own family.

Ethan added his voice to theirs.

"It's not just your wedding. I'll be involved every step of the way and keep an eye on Sophie. Relax."

I had no choice but to agree.

But I knew perfectly well that Sophie would never pass up this opportunity.

I waited until the family took Sophie out for the day.

Then I snuck into her room and found the USB drive with the wedding videos.

I opened the folder labeled "Sophie's Perfect Wedding."

Familiar scenes filled the screen, and old memories flooded back with a sickening chill.

The video showed me walking into the ballroom in a bikini.

I stood out like a sore thumb among the suits and evening gowns.

The jeers never stopped.

I covered my face and ran. The footage shook as whoever was filming chased after me.

The next video showed Richard and Victoria giving me a new dress, a rare gift from them.

At fifteen, I was so delighted I couldn't stop smiling as I twirled in front of the mirror.

I stared at the dress in confusion.

"Why does this dress smell sour?"

Seven-year-old Sophie laughed until she cried.

"It came off a dead body!

"I went to the dumpster outside the funeral home and picked it out just for you.

"You're so poor you even wear dead people's clothes!"

I screamed and ran to the bathroom to tear the dress off.

Richard gave a helpless laugh.

"Sophie's just messing with you. Your new dress is already in your room."

Victoria pressed a handkerchief to her face, her shoulders shaking with laughter.

Another video followed.

Sophie locked me in a coffin. I pounded on the wood like a madwoman, screaming and crying until my voice gave out.

And the time Sophie drugged me, leaving my face covered in boils as I sobbed in front of the mirror.

After the humiliating footage ended, the reel shifted to intimate family photos of the three of them.

Then came photos of Sophie and Ethan in matching outfits, kissing.

I stared at the screen. My fists were clenched so tight my knuckles had turned white.

Sophie was planning to play every one of my worst moments for a ballroom full of guests.

Richard knew. So did Ethan.

Every single one of them knew, and not one of them had told me.

I couldn't bear to imagine what would have happened if I hadn't found those videos first.

How completely I would have fallen apart, standing up there in front of everyone.

I kept my eyes closed for a long time before I finally calmed down.

One by one, I deleted every video and replaced them with files I had prepared in advance.

When the family came home, Sophie handed me a beautifully wrapped gift box with a bright smile.

Richard spoke up beside her.

"Sophie picked this out just for you. Go ahead, open it."

I opened it with a knot in my stomach. It was a bottle of perfume.

But I didn't dare sniff it. Didn't dare spray it on myself.

Years of being drugged and toyed with had carved the memory into my bones. Every instinct told me to pull away.

At my hesitation, Sophie immediately pouted and curled into Richard's arms, sounding wounded.

"She doesn't like my present."

Richard frowned and called my name, a note of reproach in his voice.

I set the perfume down and kept my voice calm.

"Dad, Victoria, do you think I'm just... in the way here?"

Victoria looked down and said nothing.

Richard stared at me for a long moment before managing a thin smile.

"Of course not.

"Sophie is still young. She likes to play around, and maybe we've spoiled her a little.

"You're my flesh and blood too. Once Sophie grows out of it, she'll stop with all this."

Ethan stepped forward and patted my shoulder.

"Come on, you're not a kid anymore. Stop being jealous of your sister.

"Once we're married and I'm her brother-in-law, I'll keep her in line."

All four of them could barely hide their smiles.

Every one of them was eager to see me humiliated.

I stood with my head down in silence for a moment. Then I looked up and smiled.

"You're right. She's younger than me. I should be looking out for her.

"I've been too petty."

"I know these past years..." He began, then stopped.Several seconds passed before he continued."I know how much you've suffered over the years.""You knew?" I gave a quiet laugh. His voice was hoarse."But Sophie was younger. You're so much older than she is... I thought you should let things go."My expression didn't change."Am I supposed to give in to her for the rest of my life?"Richard looked up at me. His eyes were rimmed with red."Iris, come home."He took a step forward."We can talk through everything at home again. Whatever you want, name it. We can even hold the wedding again."I looked at him and suddenly felt very tired."I'm not coming back."The Hawthorne family have nothing to do with me anymore."His lips trembled before he managed one last question."How can you be so heartless?""I'm not. I just feel sorry for the girl I used to be."He stood in silence for a long time, then turned and walked out of the room, his steps heavy and slow. After Richard left, Marco fi

The next few days passed in unexpected calm.I spent each morning getting to know the clinic and each afternoon buying things for the apartment. On the surface, the clinic was a high-end medical practice. In reality, most of its patients were family members and well-connected figures in the criminal underworld.I had only just gotten my license, but with my family background and the Besa family' personal endorsement, the clinic gave me their full trust.Marco had set me up in the apartment directly above the clinic. It all felt a little surreal.Just over a week ago, I had been in London, trapped in that frigid house, treated like a puppet in their games. Now I sat in the Mediterranean sunshine, and no one was waiting for me to make a fool of myself.I took a sip of tea and savored the rare peace.A few days later, I began seeing patients. The work at the clinic wasn't complicated. As the newcomer, I handled only routine appointments and minor wound care. The family members who came in

The other end went silent for two seconds."That... those were just her jokes."Ethan sounded uncertain, but he forced the words out anyway."And you're the older sister... she's younger.""She's nineteen," I said evenly. "She's an adult."Ethan had no response. After a long pause, he tried again."Iris, I'm calling to give you one last chance."Come back. Apologize to Sophie publicly. Tell everyone that video was fake."He paused."If you do that, our engagement can still stand. I'll tell my parents you had a lapse in judgment. I'll take care of them."A laugh nearly escaped me."You think I still care about the engagement?""Iris, stop being stubborn." His voice carried that old certainty of his."I know exactly what kind of person you are. You've felt insecure your whole life. Without me by your side all these years, you wouldn't have made it."You've been away for two days, and right now it feels exciting and new. Once the rush wears off, you'll regret it."He let the silence hang,

The sun shone brightly in southern Italy.I sat on the balcony of the apartment the Besa family had arranged for me, sipping a cup of hot tea.My phone had been off since before I boarded the plane, and I hadn't turned it back on.The only way I contacted anyone was through the dedicated phone the Besa family had given me.I knew the wedding was over by now, but I had no desire to see the fallout. Then there was a knock at the door. The visitor was the Besa liaison assigned to me.His name was Marco Bellini, an Italian man in his early forties. He went over the clinic's daily schedule with me and the things I needed to know. When he was done, he added something almost in passing."The Hawthorne family are in complete chaos. The video from the wedding is still going viral."My curiosity got the better of me.Later, when I was alone, I finally gave in and turned on my old phone. The moment it powered up, notifications for countless missed calls flooded the screen.Every one was from the

Richard nodded approvingly."That's more like it. You two are sisters, after all."After graduation, you'll stay and work as the family's doctor, taking care of Sophie's health."I lowered my eyes and murmured my agreement before heading upstairs.Ethan followed me into my room.He wore a satisfied smile."Honestly, up until today, I was still on the fence about whether to call off our engagement."He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed."You've got a temper. You're petty. You can't even take a little joke from your sister."But after what you said today, it looks like you've finally learned how to behave. We'll go ahead with the wedding."I looked up at him, unable to hide my disbelief."So you were never planning to marry me?"He didn't nod or shake his head. He just smiled."I wasn't about to marry someone bitter and jealous."He turned and walked away. His footsteps faded down the hallway.I stood alone in the empty room, and a laugh escaped me.The entire relationship had b
