Chapter 2

Author: Luna D
Rachel came by first thing in the morning with a new tenant who wanted to take over the lease.

Luca hadn't come home all night.

At three in the morning, he'd posted a group photo from a restaurant in the chat.

Sophia had his suit jacket around her shoulders and was leaning against him.

Marco was shelling lobster for her, and Dante was crouched beside her, tending to the blisters her heels had rubbed into her feet.

The caption read, "Took all night, but we finally got our little princess smiling."

I stared at the photo. I hadn't eaten all night, but acid rose in my throat. Once the nausea passed, I turned off my phone and sent Luca's last box of things to his club in Little Italy.

At ten in the morning, Sophia sent a voice message to the family group chat.

"Emilia, are you still mad at me? Last night Luca was worried the red paint really was a warning, so he stood guard outside my door the whole time."

She paused, sounding even more wounded. "Emilia, please don't get the wrong idea. I only think of Luca as a brother. If it bothers you, I'll try not to rely on him so much from now on."

Luca replied right away, "You don't have to make yourself small for her."

Marco chimed in, "She just can't stand anyone being loved more than her."

Dante was even blunter. "She's a waste of space, clinging to the eldest daughter's place just because she was born a Moretti. Who is she to tell you what to do?"

I was about to leave the group when Luca messaged me privately with a photo of a chestnut cream roll.

"Saved this for you."

Ten years ago, at the first family banquet I ever went to, I'd stared at that dessert for a long time.

After that, every time we fought, all he had to do was bring one of those boxes home, and I'd be the first to give in.

But this time, I sent back just two words.

"No need."

His reply popped up instantly.

"Enough already."

"I'm only bothering to make up with you because you're about to be Mrs. Romano."

"Keep testing my patience, and no one will ever offer you that spot again."

It wasn't until the next message came in that I understood why he'd sent me dessert.

"Sophia's allergy meds are on the nightstand at the apartment."

"Bring them to the club. Now."

He wasn't making it up to me. He was offering me a box of pastries to get me to run Sophia's errands.

I didn't reply.

Half an hour later, Marco called.

"Where are the meds?"

"There's a pharmacy downstairs. Luca can buy them himself."

Marco laughed like he'd heard a joke. "Luca and his men guarded her all night, and you want to send him on errands? What else are you good for besides jealousy and sulking? If anything happens to Sophia, you can go kneel at Mom's grave and beg her forgiveness."

Before our mother died, she'd made my brothers promise to protect me until I inherited everything she'd left in Sicily.

But after Sophia moved into the Moretti estate, they rewrote her last words.

Now I was expected to coddle Sophia and share the seat and inheritance our mother had left me with her.

Otherwise, I was a spiteful woman who didn't deserve the Moretti name.

"I'm not bringing them."

Marco cut me off. "Emilia, don't push your luck. Without the family's support or Luca willing to marry you, what are you? At least Sophia's sweet, sensible, and easy to love. What about you? You're 30, and even your own brothers can't stand you."

The call cut off, and the busy signal kept pounding in my ears.

Then Dante texted, "I left the family crest with your doorman."

"Iron Sophia's dress."

"Her skin's delicate. Even one wrinkle bothers her."

Right after that, Sophia sent a photo of an IV in the back of her hand.

"Don't listen to Dante, Emilia."

"A few wrinkles are fine. I can put up with it."

"And if you don't want to bring the medicine, that's okay too. I can tough it out."

I stared at her messages, unmoved.

Then I called a courier and sent the meds and the dress back to the Moretti estate.

I didn't want to hear them curse me in my mother's name ever again.

That afternoon, I returned the Romano family's engagement ring and signed the papers ending the lease and transferring it to the new tenant.

That evening, the ring was delivered to Luca.

He took a picture of the ring box and posted it in the family group chat.

"Emilia, you really think you're something, don't you?"

"I'm taking this ring back."

"Even if you come crawling to the Romano estate on your knees, I'm never putting it on your finger again."

Sophia sent a crying emoji.

"Is it because the ring isn't expensive enough?"

"If it's because Luca gave me a bracelet, I'll give it back to him right now."

Luca replied, "You earned that. It has nothing to do with her."

"She's not worth a single hair on your head."

I left the group chat and signed my employment contract with Bellini Shipping.

48 hours until my flight.

They still thought I was just throwing a tantrum.

I was already counting down the hours until I went back to Sicily.

Six months later, Bellini Shipping's new route to New York officially launched.I was standing backstage at the launch event in Palermo.A coworker straightened my cuff and noticed the repaired emerald bangle on my wrist. A thread of gold traced the crack that remained. The inside of the bangle rested against my pulse, warm from my skin. It wasn't perfect, but it felt more like mine than it ever had."Emilia, you're up."I nodded. The stage lights came up.Every representative was there, and my name was on the big screen.Head of European Markets at Bellini Shipping, New York Route Project Lead.Emilia Moretti. The partners in the audience stood and applauded. The livestream camera panned across the seats. Luca was in the last row, and my two brothers sat on the other side. When I saw them, my breathing only stumbled for half a beat before I turned back to the camera. They didn't contact me, and they didn't force their way backstage. After the event, a reporter asked, "Ms. Moretti, whe

Before I went back to New York, I had my lawyer formally sue Sophia. She would cover the cost of repairing the emerald bangle and its loss in value. The Moretti family would replenish the education fund Marco had diverted to open her gallery, and everything bought with that money would be recovered. After that, Sophia was taken back to New York for an internal review by the family council. She'd faked a death threat, used my phone behind my back, and nearly wrecked a marriage alliance. The council revoked her right to use the Moretti name and to call on the family's guards, and barred her from coming near my home or my workplace. But they didn't abandon her.Marco arranged an ordinary place for her to live and gave her only a basic allowance. Bruno would keep an eye on her, and she was no longer allowed at any family event."She did wrong, and she has to answer for it. But the Moretti family took her in. We can't just throw her out on the street to die."I didn't comment. That clarity

Sophia followed me all the way to Sicily. She stopped me in the hotel lobby. The moment she saw me, she dropped to her knees.A crowd gathered around us in seconds."Emilia, I was wrong. Please don't give up on Marco and Dante. They haven't been able to eat or sleep for days. If you come back to New York, I'll leave the Moretti family right away."Luca and my two brothers arrived just then.Sophia cried even harder. "I'm the one who took Emilia's place. I'd give her my life if that's what it takes."As she said it, she suddenly threw herself at the corner of a nearby table.Dante caught her.Sophia let herself fall into his arms, but Dante only steadied her and let go right away."Stand up straight."Sophia's crying faltered.I had my coworker open the laptop."Since everyone's here, let's settle all of it once and for all."The first clip was the security footage from the garage on the wedding day.The so-called death mark was just where a utility truck had scraped off the paint and e

The next day, my two brothers asked to meet me.They chose my mother's favorite restaurant in Palermo.By the time I got there, they'd already been waiting for two hours.Marco pushed a document box across to me."These are letters Mom left. They were locked in the safe at the New York estate all this time."I didn't take it.They both went quiet."Get to the point."Dante's voice was hoarse. "We know we were wrong. Before Mom died, she asked us to look after you, and we didn't."Marco went on, "But we're still family. Come back to New York with us. There will always be a place for you in the Moretti family."I looked at them."My place?"Half of Sophia's walk-in closet?"Marco avoided my eyes."Your room's been put back the way it was. We found your trophies and photos too.""And the bedspread?"Neither of them could answer right away. The bedspread my mother had sewn by hand had been shoved under the shoe cabinet.Dante lowered his head."It got ruined in the wash, so we couldn't sav

That night, Luca submitted a meeting request through his lawyer and waited for me in the lobby of my hotel. The moment I stepped off the elevator, he came toward me."Let's talk. Ten minutes."I checked the time."Fine."He visibly relaxed. We sat down in a corner of the café.Luca set the wedding ring on the table."We'll redo the wedding. This time we do everything your way. Sophia won't be there."The ring clinked against the saucer. My stomach dropped with it, as if my body still remembered all those nights I'd spent wearing it and waiting for him."What else?""I can buy the apartment. You can choose whether we marry in New York or Sicily. Emilia, I've done this much. Isn't it enough?"I laughed at the question. "You think I left because the wedding wasn't good enough?""Isn't that it?""Then listen carefully."I pushed the ring back."On the anniversary of my mother's death, you promised to go to church with me."Sophia said she was feeling down, and you took her to the opera."L

Three months later, the European Ports Alliance held its final summit.Outside the venue in Palermo, the press, shipping companies, and representatives of the families' legitimate businesses crowded the entrance. After we'd made it through the previous round, Bellini Shipping put me in charge of the New York market team. I was leading the final presentation myself.Luca and my two brothers flew over overnight, but venue security stopped them at the entrance."The three of you aren't on the guest list."Luca held out a Romano family business card. The guard glanced at it."Business visitors need to submit a meeting request in advance."Marco said in a low voice, "We're Emilia's family."A staffer checked the list."None of you are listed as her family."All they could do was stand outside the glass doors.I walked onstage in a black suit. When I saw the three of them outside the glass doors, my palm went damp around the clicker. But as the route map lit up behind me, my breathing steadi
