Chapter 1

Author: Luna D
Today was supposed to be my wedding day with Luca, but I stood alone at the altar for 40 minutes.

Luca didn't show.

Neither did my two brothers.

All because half an hour earlier, Sophia had posted a photo of the wedding car in the Moretti family's encrypted group chat.

There was a blood-red cross on the black car door.

She said someone was targeting the wedding convoy. She was trapped in an underground garage, too scared to get out of the car.

Luca was the first to grab his gun and run out of the church.

My oldest brother, Marco, had become Don after our father died. He'd already ordered security to lock down the church and check the cameras, but he still took his personal guards to find her himself.

My other older brother, Dante, who ran the family's business at the docks, even forgot he was holding the Moretti family crest he was supposed to pin on me.

The guards and guests were all there. But of the three men who should have stood beside me, not one stayed.

Cold air crept through my off-the-shoulder gown and into my bones. I clutched my bouquet, my palms so sweaty that the ribbon turned sticky.

I called Luca to ask whether something had really happened in that garage.

Instead, I heard Sophia laughing on the other end.

The so-called blood-red cross was just red rustproofing showing through where a utility truck had scraped off the paint. Security footage had cleared it up ten minutes earlier.

But none of them had come back. They were up in a private dining room on the hotel's top floor, having drinks with Sophia to settle her nerves.

I told them to come back right now.

Luca sounded like it was obvious. "The wedding's not going anywhere. Sophia just had a scare. Don't pick a fight with her right now."

I'd planned this wedding myself, from the venue to the seating chart. After our mother died, I'd also hosted the family's guests and kept the shipping files in order. I'd never cried in front of them, so they acted as if I couldn't be hurt.

But let Sophia's eyes fill with tears once, and they'd drop everything to comfort her.

After I hung up, Claire, the wedding planner, asked quietly, "The guests are all waiting. Are we still going ahead with the ceremony?"

I took off my veil and laid it on Luca's empty chair.

"We're done waiting. The wedding's canceled, and so is the alliance between our families."

Just as I was signing the cancellation form, Luca called again.

"Where's Sophia's spare dress? Someone spilled hot soup on her, and her skirt's ruined. She's crying so hard she can't breathe."

"There's only one bridesmaid dress. No spare."

Marco scoffed on the other end of the line. "Emilia, you can't do anything right, but you sure know how to scheme. You knew she was representing the family today, and you ordered only one dress on purpose."

Then Dante chimed in, "Who are you trying to impress, acting like a spoiled princess?"

Sophia pleaded with them through her tears, "Don't yell at Emilia, you guys. If she doesn't want to bring me a dress, I'll just go down in the dirty one."

Luca heard that and turned his anger on me instead. "Bring the dress up here and apologize to her."

"The wedding's canceled."

The line went quiet for two seconds.

Luca scoffed. "You think you get to cancel? You're 30, and you've already had one broken engagement. Who in New York would take you now? I'm only marrying a Moretti daughter nobody wants because of our history."

I gripped the pen until it dug into the web between my thumb and forefinger. A small blot of ink spread across the form. I looked down and finished the last stroke.

Dante laughed. "Leave her hanging for two days, and she'll remember the family rules."

Sophia quickly cut in, "Don't talk about Emilia like that. She just cares so much about Luca that she can't accept he saved me first."

She sniffled softly. "It's all my fault. If you'd never brought me home, Emilia would have been so happy."

All three men started comforting her at once.

No one noticed I'd already hung up.

Back at the apartment where I lived alone, I took our engagement photo off the wall.

The lease had always been in my name.

While we planned the wedding, Luca had gradually moved some of his things in, but he'd never paid a cent of rent.

Under the families' arrangement, once the ceremony was over, I was supposed to move into the Romano estate and become a proper wife who knew her place.

This had never been a home the Romano family set up for us. It was just my apartment, but Luca had long treated it as somewhere he could come and go as he pleased.

All because our families had spent three years negotiating this marriage.

The Moretti family wanted into the European market, and the Romano family needed protection at the New York ports.

My only job was to marry Luca and put both sides at ease. No one ever asked whether I wanted to.

I boxed up Luca's things and sent them to the Romano family's club, then called Rachel, the leasing agent.

"I'm ending my lease early. Take the fee out of my deposit. Tell the landlord to change the locks and find someone to take over the apartment."

When I hung up, I called Daniel, my lawyer.

"Have the papers ending the engagement delivered to Luca tonight. And send the Moretti family crest back to the estate with a statement that, as of today, I'm no longer bound to marry for the family."

Finally, I called Enzo Bellini, who had reached out to me six months earlier.

"Mr. Bellini, is the job in Palermo still open?"

All he asked was, "Are you going to turn down the job for a wedding again?"

"Not anymore."

I was leaving New York to be an ordinary market development manager at Bellini Shipping.

Six months later, Bellini Shipping's new route to New York officially launched.I was standing backstage at the launch event in Palermo.A coworker straightened my cuff and noticed the repaired emerald bangle on my wrist. A thread of gold traced the crack that remained. The inside of the bangle rested against my pulse, warm from my skin. It wasn't perfect, but it felt more like mine than it ever had."Emilia, you're up."I nodded. The stage lights came up.Every representative was there, and my name was on the big screen.Head of European Markets at Bellini Shipping, New York Route Project Lead.Emilia Moretti. The partners in the audience stood and applauded. The livestream camera panned across the seats. Luca was in the last row, and my two brothers sat on the other side. When I saw them, my breathing only stumbled for half a beat before I turned back to the camera. They didn't contact me, and they didn't force their way backstage. After the event, a reporter asked, "Ms. Moretti, whe

Before I went back to New York, I had my lawyer formally sue Sophia. She would cover the cost of repairing the emerald bangle and its loss in value. The Moretti family would replenish the education fund Marco had diverted to open her gallery, and everything bought with that money would be recovered. After that, Sophia was taken back to New York for an internal review by the family council. She'd faked a death threat, used my phone behind my back, and nearly wrecked a marriage alliance. The council revoked her right to use the Moretti name and to call on the family's guards, and barred her from coming near my home or my workplace. But they didn't abandon her.Marco arranged an ordinary place for her to live and gave her only a basic allowance. Bruno would keep an eye on her, and she was no longer allowed at any family event."She did wrong, and she has to answer for it. But the Moretti family took her in. We can't just throw her out on the street to die."I didn't comment. That clarity

Sophia followed me all the way to Sicily. She stopped me in the hotel lobby. The moment she saw me, she dropped to her knees.A crowd gathered around us in seconds."Emilia, I was wrong. Please don't give up on Marco and Dante. They haven't been able to eat or sleep for days. If you come back to New York, I'll leave the Moretti family right away."Luca and my two brothers arrived just then.Sophia cried even harder. "I'm the one who took Emilia's place. I'd give her my life if that's what it takes."As she said it, she suddenly threw herself at the corner of a nearby table.Dante caught her.Sophia let herself fall into his arms, but Dante only steadied her and let go right away."Stand up straight."Sophia's crying faltered.I had my coworker open the laptop."Since everyone's here, let's settle all of it once and for all."The first clip was the security footage from the garage on the wedding day.The so-called death mark was just where a utility truck had scraped off the paint and e

The next day, my two brothers asked to meet me.They chose my mother's favorite restaurant in Palermo.By the time I got there, they'd already been waiting for two hours.Marco pushed a document box across to me."These are letters Mom left. They were locked in the safe at the New York estate all this time."I didn't take it.They both went quiet."Get to the point."Dante's voice was hoarse. "We know we were wrong. Before Mom died, she asked us to look after you, and we didn't."Marco went on, "But we're still family. Come back to New York with us. There will always be a place for you in the Moretti family."I looked at them."My place?"Half of Sophia's walk-in closet?"Marco avoided my eyes."Your room's been put back the way it was. We found your trophies and photos too.""And the bedspread?"Neither of them could answer right away. The bedspread my mother had sewn by hand had been shoved under the shoe cabinet.Dante lowered his head."It got ruined in the wash, so we couldn't sav

That night, Luca submitted a meeting request through his lawyer and waited for me in the lobby of my hotel. The moment I stepped off the elevator, he came toward me."Let's talk. Ten minutes."I checked the time."Fine."He visibly relaxed. We sat down in a corner of the café.Luca set the wedding ring on the table."We'll redo the wedding. This time we do everything your way. Sophia won't be there."The ring clinked against the saucer. My stomach dropped with it, as if my body still remembered all those nights I'd spent wearing it and waiting for him."What else?""I can buy the apartment. You can choose whether we marry in New York or Sicily. Emilia, I've done this much. Isn't it enough?"I laughed at the question. "You think I left because the wedding wasn't good enough?""Isn't that it?""Then listen carefully."I pushed the ring back."On the anniversary of my mother's death, you promised to go to church with me."Sophia said she was feeling down, and you took her to the opera."L

Three months later, the European Ports Alliance held its final summit.Outside the venue in Palermo, the press, shipping companies, and representatives of the families' legitimate businesses crowded the entrance. After we'd made it through the previous round, Bellini Shipping put me in charge of the New York market team. I was leading the final presentation myself.Luca and my two brothers flew over overnight, but venue security stopped them at the entrance."The three of you aren't on the guest list."Luca held out a Romano family business card. The guard glanced at it."Business visitors need to submit a meeting request in advance."Marco said in a low voice, "We're Emilia's family."A staffer checked the list."None of you are listed as her family."All they could do was stand outside the glass doors.I walked onstage in a black suit. When I saw the three of them outside the glass doors, my palm went damp around the clicker. But as the route map lit up behind me, my breathing steadi
