Chapter 6

Author: Mingo
Damian drove to Boston overnight.

The next morning, he was standing in the Harvard Law School administrative office.

The staff member asked one question.

"What is your relationship to Ms. Moretti?"

He answered without hesitation. "Her fiancé."

The staff member pulled up the file.

"Ms. Moretti's emergency contact list does not include you."

Damian's face stiffened. "She's just upset with me. Please, just tell me where her dorm is."

"I'm sorry. Under FERPA, we cannot confirm or deny any student's

Five years after graduation.I'd gone from the youngest research fellow to the youngest clerk on the federal appellate court. Before the announcement, the law school contacted me. The New York Bar Association wanted me to come back for an award."Financial Law Rising Star of the Year.""Your asset recovery model has been adopted by twelve jurisdictions."When I turned on my phone, messages flooded in like an avalanche.Damian had sent over two thousand. The first was: [Vivian, stop making a scene.]The last was from yesterday.[I'm not waiting for your forgiveness.][I just want to know you're safe.]My father had been repairing corners of the old house. He photographed each one and sent it.My mother uploaded the recovered videos one by one. She'd even edited a documentary herself. It was called "The Empty Seat."The cover was the oak tree in the old courtyard. The unfilled hole beneath it.I watched all of it. Then I cleared it with one tap.Not out of hate. There was just no reason

Life at Harvard Law was busier than I'd imagined. My first week, my advisor selected me for a research team.Days in the case library. Nights writing memos.Boston winters hit twenty below. The wind was full of snow.A senior classmate handed me a coffee. "Regret it? Coming here from New York?"I shook my head. "No.""Miss home?"I thought about it. "I miss my grandmother.""Anyone else?""No one else."He didn't ask again.By the end of my first semester, I ranked first in my class. My advisor placed a federal clerkship recommendation letter in front of me."You're the best student I've ever had.""Third year, I'm sending you to the Supreme Court for an internship."I took a sip of the coffee that had gone cold. It tasted sweeter than the real champagne at Chloe's party.Six months later, my parents showed up at Harvard.I saw them from the third-floor library. They stood at the administrative office on the ground floor, blocked by staff. My mother was crying. My father stood with cle

The next day, the news spread through New York. The New York Law Journal reported this year's Harvard Law full scholarship recipients.Vivian Moretti. Only two people from all of New York were selected. Not family-sponsored. Not legacy admissions. On merit alone. The socialites who'd cornered me yesterday were stunned. Then they started sneering again."She actually left? Probably got dumped and ran away heartbroken."They turned around and saw Damian standing behind them. Their faces changed instantly."We... we were just joking."Damian stared at her coldly. "Who knocked over the flower shop's bucket?"The girl stammered, "It was an accident.""The camera?""Also an accident."Damian reached out, snatched the phone from her hand, and threw it into the fountain on the corner. She screamed. "Are you insane?!""Hand slipped."He gave her back exactly what she'd given me.But after all of it, he felt nothing.Because when I was standing there, he hadn't come over. Now he was defending me

"We're her family!""Then you should know more about her than we do," the staff member replied. All three of them went silent. They didn't know. They'd only found out about the enrollment confirmation by searching my room yesterday. My mother forced herself to stay calm. "We won't ask for her address. Can you at least pass along items for us?""No.""Then when can we contact her?""That's the student's personal choice. The law s

Damian blinked, then sent another message.[Vivian, stop playing games with the deactivation.]Same system notification. My father leaned over to look. "What's she throwing a tantrum about now?""She deactivated her number."Damian sounded uneasy. My father's voice was impatient. "How old is she? Still this childish?"But my mother stopped what she was doing."Where's the hard drive?"Chloe blinked. "Wasn't Vivian supposed to bring it?"Just then, the doorbell rang.Damian was on his feet instantly. But when he opened the door, it was only a delivery courier."Mr. Salvatorre?""Same-day delivery for you."The box was opened. Inside was the external hard drive.Damian plugged it into the computer. The folder was empty. No first trip to the Hamptons. No photo of us at the pier.Just one new document.[You wanted a home without me in it.][Now you have it.]The living room went silent. My father frowned. "Is this really necessary?"Damian grabbed his coat. "Her apartment. Something's wron

At dawn, the old butler parked the black sedan outside my apartment. My parents and Damian were still busy setting up the ball. The group chat had been active all night. My mother sent a photo of a wall of balloons.[Vivian, you pick the flowers for the banquet hall. You have the best taste.]My father replied below: [She's still throwing a tantrum. Ignore her.]Damian posted a picture of a four-person cake.[Chloe said she'll save you half. Are you coming or not?]The butler loaded my luggage into the trunk. He opened the back door and laid a cashmere blanket on the seat."Miss, the late Madam instructed that you get cold on long trips."My nose stung. At least someone remembered I got cold.I didn't reply to the group chat.A notification popped up. Chloe had changed the group name from "Family of Five" to "Family of Four."Then she sent a screenshot. My group nickname had been changed to "Guest."Chloe sent a laughing emoji. [I just changed it randomly. Vivian won't be mad, right?]
