Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Penny was bandaged from head to toe as she was sent to the ICU.

Her face was completely ripped off, and bones were exposed in several areas.

I deliberately changed into loose clothing and put on a mask and hat.

I hid in a secluded corner.

I could see the ward from here, and Jared could not see me from that angle.

“The patient’s condition is complicated.”

The doctor said to him, “The treatment will cost at least a few million dollars, and that’s excluding the costs for plastic surgery and skin grafts after.”

Jared frowned and looked annoyed.

“A few million dollars? She isn’t worth that much money!”

Of course, he did not want to save me.

Even though I had mentally prepared myself, I was still upset when I heard his blatant indifference.

He had nothing when we first got together. I was the one who helped him set up his business, which was why his career took off.

We were not very rich, but he could totally afford a few million dollars.

He just did not want to spend it on me. All he could think of was a happy ending with Penny.

The doctor did not expect Jared to reject it outright.

“Don’t you want to consider it? According to the medical report, she’s two months pregnant.”

“What?!”

Jared looked a little torn.

We did not have children despite being married for many years.

The examination results showed that he had a low sperm count.

It was not easy for us to have a baby.

However, I had not expected Penny to be pregnant.

Two months ago, I went back to my hometown for my grandmother’s funeral.

He said he had work to do, so he did not come with me.

Because of him, my entire family said that I was ruthless.

It seemed he had not been busy with work.

Instead, he was sleeping with Penny.

“Then… you should save her…” Jared hesitated.

I was disgusted by the two of them.

Since he wanted a child, I would not let him have his way.

I immediately flipped through Penny’s phone.

I found a photo of her pregnancy test report.

I sent it over to Jared.

[Jared, here’s a surprise for you!]

Jared received the photo, and his expression immediately changed when he read the report. He was shocked and excited.

[Baby, you’re pregnant?]

[I wanted to tell you after making sure first. You’re not mad at me, are you?]

I pretended to be coy. [Since you’re going to marry me, I want my baby to have a complete family.]

[Don’t worry, you’ll be my only wife!]

Jared was extremely happy.

He kept sending sweet texts to Penny.

He had never said these things to me ever.

After he confirmed Penny’s pregnancy report, he said to the doctor, “Abort that child. I don’t need it.”

“Mr. Smith, do you want to at least reconsider?” The doctor’s face was stern.

“Abort it!”

Jared glared at the doctor and gritted his teeth. “I have low sperm count, and she’s pregnant! It must be some other man’s child! Why’d I save this woman?”

His words pierced through my heart.

All these years, I was afraid that he would be insecure about why we could not have children. So, I told everyone that the problem was with me.

Aside from being looked down on by others, I suffered a lot from IVFs.

Initially, I thought that he would appreciate my effort.

Instead, he had given me a big reality check.

After the doctor left, Jared also wanted to leave.

Penny suddenly woke up.

Her pained moans could be heard outside the ward.

My heart dropped.

I was afraid that he would recognize her voice.

Jared turned around and walked into the ward suspiciously.

When Penny saw him, she made even more noises.

She was trying very hard to grab Jared’s hand.

My heart was thumping against my chest.

If Jared recognized that this was Penny who was lying on the hospital bed, he would exhaust his resources to save her, and he would blame it all on me.

I would meet my end!

“Sammy?” Jared extended his hand toward Penny’s face.

After a long rest, I took out a sum of money to start my own business. In the past, I helped Jared with his company. Everyone thought he was a prodigy at business. He accepted the praise and ignored me. He never mentioned me or accepted my support after that.Even though I was not happy about it, I loved him too much, so I still helped. I endured everything because I was his wife. But I wanted him to pay what he owed me.I had the ability and the experience. Very soon, I found collaborators as I started my business, and I managed to get a few new projects. I went on a field trip with my business partner. There, I ran into Jared. He no longer looked like a smug, successful CEO. Instead, he was wearing a crumpled, cheap suit. He sat on the floor and panted. He was holding a stack of brochures. He thought that he would be able to turn his business around if he tried. However, without my help, he could not do anything. “Sammy?”He saw me and glared furiously when

“Remember, you forced me to do this.”Jared told his assistant to bring over freshly printed divorce papers. To quickly divorce him, I took only a small portion of the assets with me. Jared was very pleased that he got the company. The day I divorced him, I went back to the mansion. Jared was arranging a grand funeral for Penny there. I noticed that he looked a lot more haggard. It was as if he had aged more than ten years. He was very much affected by Penny’s death. “Aren’t you jealous?”He pointed at Penny’s photo. “You’ll never get my attention in this life as she does.”‘Jealous?’ I thought.I looked at the grandly decorated hall and tried to hold back my laughter. Jared was too cocky. He thought that I would be jealous of a dead person. I had $50 million and a good life ahead of me. Why would I be jealous of Penny, who died a terrible death? After we finalized the divorce, I immediately packed my belongings and prepared to leave. “Don’t take anything ye

I shook my head. Jared roared, “You’re lying! It was you! If something happens to Penny, I’ll make you pay with your life!”In the past, I would have been upset and hurt at such a misunderstanding. But I no longer cared anymore. I almost laughed.“Please, I can’t make a brown bear attack her.”“Why not?” Jared was furious. “You deliberately passed the jacket to Penny so that the bear would attack her!” “Jacket? The one you gave me?” I reminded him coldly. Jared paused. He realized he had slipped up, so he remained quiet. He had given me that jacket. Inside, there was a package that would attract the brown bear’s senses. When I received the jacket, I teared up because I was so touched by his gesture. I thought he finally cared about me. It was the first time he had bought me a gift in many years. The jacket that I treasured was a death sentence. The doors to the emergency room opened. The nurses wheeled Penny, who was covered by a white cloth, out of the room.

Jared’s smile disappeared. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead. A vein throbbed at his temple. He choked me fiercely and said threateningly, “Say that again!” He loved Penny a lot. He could not consider the possibility of her getting hurt. “You don’t believe me?”I sneered and said, “We got our jackets mixed up. Her jacket is still in my bag. Take a look if you don’t believe me.”Jared opened my backpack doubtfully. Then, he took out the jacket from my bag. The jacket had Penny’s name tag on it. He threw it aside in shock. “Impossible! She texted me and said she was safe…” he muttered frantically.“You think I’ll believe you? You might be pulling this trick again to get my attention!”After that, he took out his phone to call the police. “I’m going to ask the police to do a fingerprint test, so everyone can see through your scheme!” Since he did not believe me, I did not bother to explain. The longer he dragged this on, the less likely Penny would survive.Af

Mary, who was initially smug, was also shocked and at a loss for words. Her face turned almost blue from holding her breath. She pointed at me and stuttered. The influencers filmed me as they did not know the truth. “Everyone, look! This is a home-wrecker who preys on men in the hospital! We’re teaching her a lesson today!”“Just look at that face! Total vulture!” They did not know me, but they were already treating me as though I were a mistress. The tour manager regained his senses. He rushed over to me. “Sammy? Are you alright?”After making sure I was not injured, he regained his composure. He then turned around and slapped Jared.“You can’t even tell if that’s your wife, and you demand compensation?” he yelled. “I might as well send you straight to hell!” Jared could not fight back. Instead, he lay on the floor moaning and shaking. The tour manager turned around and left after venting his anger. “What do you mean? Are you not going to pay us?”Mary came b

How did she recognize me?My heart pounded. I was trembling in fear. I kept pressing the mask to my face with both hands. I thought Jared knew everything.I thought maybe he knew I was hiding from him, so he was scheming with Mary to make me turn up here.Mary was very strong. I struggled and barely broke free. I was able to keep the mask on my face. “Mom, what’re you doing?” Jared walked over and stopped Mary. I met his gaze. His eyes suddenly turned sharp, as though he had seen through me.“Why’re you asking me? Ask her!” Mary crossed her arms and said smugly, “These women purposely prey on men in the hospital. She wants to seduce my son and be his mistress!” I was dumbfounded. My racing heart finally started to calm down. Fortunately, she had not recognized me. She just thought I was a floozy. Jared sized me up and sneered. “Don’t even think for a moment that you can have me. I’m loyal to my wife.”The influencers cheered when they heard that. They pra
