Chapter 1

Author: Alyssa J
When the rogues kidnapped me, my father, my brother, and my fiancé wouldn't even give three hundred dollars as ransom.

Yet they threw tens of millions dollars at my adopted sister's birthday celebration while I was butchered by rogues who never got their payment.

The adoptive sister’s parents died saving me, and after my family took her in, she became the center of attention—and the most important person—in our home.

But when they got my death finally, they all fell into deep sorrow.

When my body was discovered, it had already decomposed severely.

After a month submerged in the river, I was bloated beyond recognition.

On top of that, my entire body had been folded into a 20-inch suitcase.

The skin of my face had adhered to my thighs, a bloody mess.

But even in that state, my hand still clutched my phone, refusing to let go.

Everyone at the scene felt a pang of bitterness in their hearts.

Even my brother Damine, the pack forensic who had rushed to the scene after receiving the call, looked pained.

The body of a member who had been brutally killed by the rogue wolves was found on the territory. As the head of pack's guard force, Damine received the notification and rushed to the scene.

"She must have been terrified before she died."

My brother sighed, carefully prying the phone from my hand.

That gentle movement was something I hadn't experienced from him since I turned ten.

When I was ten, Sera wasn't my sister yet.

It was because I was spoiled and stubborn back then, insisting on chasing after a balloon that flew away.

However, on the way, we encountered a once-in-a-century mudslide. It was Serah's parents who saved me.

Her parents both died in that mudslide, protecting me. Their bodies were never recovered.

Out of guilt, my parents adopted her.

But from that moment on, my world turned upside down.

Sera stole all the love my family had for me. She would deliberately frame me.

Whenever I tried to explain, My family members always accuse me of being jealous and immature.

I stared at my brother's hands in a daze.

How long had it been since he touched my face this gently?

"Female victim, age between tAshwoodty and tAshwoodty-five. Preliminary assessment: time of death approximately one month ago."

His assistance stood nearby, reporting the initial examination results.

My brother's movements stopped abruptly.

One month.

Exactly when I disappeared.

I clearly saw his eyelashes tremble.

Did he think of me?

Did he feel even a trace of concern for me?

The assistance noticed my brother pause and thought his eyes were bothering him. He asked quietly with concern.

"Mr. Ashwood, are your eyes hurting again? Do you need to rest?"

My brother snapped out of it, his face breaking into a proud smile.

"My eyes are fine now."

"It's all thanks to my sister Sera. If she hadn't donated a cornea to me, my eyes wouldn't have healed this quickly."

"That's wonderful news."

The Beta quickly congratulated him, then hesitated and said in a low voice.

"But Mr Ashwood, isn't your sister's name Jocelyn? Or am I remembering wrong?"

My brother's expression froze. His smile faded.

"Don't mention her. I'm so disappointed in her. The moment she found out about my eyes, she disappeared. I never asked her to burden herself for me."

"Thank the Moon Goddess for my adopted sister Sera, who donated a cornea and saved my sight. I never thought blood could be weaker than adoption. From now on, I don't have that sister anymore."

His words were like an ice-cold dagger, instantly shattering the hope and dreams in my heart.

I smiled bitterly.

Of course. How could he think of me?

After all, in his mind, I was the evil woman who watched her brother suffer and ran away.

But brother, I didn't disappear on purpose.

I didn't abandon you when you needed me most.

No one believed me when I said I was kidnapped.

My brother would never know the cornea was mine. I had arranged the donation before I was taken.

But just like everything else I did for this family and our pack, Sera had stolen the credit.

The kidnapper's recording was like a boulder thrown into a still pond, creating devastating ripples. But the storm in Damien's bloodshot eyes did not subside. This was only the beginning."No... this can't be true... it's fake! This is defamation!" Sera cried out, her voice sharp, making a last-ditch effort to defend herself. But Damien only glared at her with an icy gaze that seemed to say, "All your struggles are futile." His trembling fingers tapped the screen, opening one encrypted file after another from the private investigator. There were edited chat logs showing her discussing how to create fake medical records with black-market brokers to pose as an organ donor. There were doctored bank statements that showed "Jocelyn" had large, suspicious fund transfers, proving she had "run away with the money." There were secretly recorded audio clips of her, before Rowan and Marcus, using carefully edited and twisted contexts to slander me for being "jealous" of her and "bullying" her.

Damien's black Bentley carved a silent path through the night toward the Ashwood family estate. He took out his phone, the screen's cold light instantly illuminating his angular face etched with exhaustion and hatred. Without hesitation, he dialed an encrypted number. His voice was hoarse but carried an undeniable resolve: "It's me. Activate top-level clearance. Target: Sera Ashwood. I want everything. From the day she set foot in the Ashwood house—all her associations, communications records, financial transactions, all movements of funds in her name and connected accounts, especially all unusual large transactions in the past year... Yes, her! Use all resources. I want results in the shortest time possible. Cost is no object!"There was a moment of silence on the other end, followed by a steady reply: "Understood, Mr. Ashwood."Damien didn't go home. Instead, he parked his car by an artificial lake overlooking the estate. He smoked one cigarette after another, the red embers glo

Suddenly, the heavy metal door was thrown open with such force it slammed against the wall.My father, Marcus , burst in first. He wore an expensive tailored suit, his hair perfectly combed, but his face was etched with impatience and anxiety. "What in the hell is going on here?" he demanded, his voice sharp as a whip. "You called us here in a rush without explanation..." His words trailed off as his eyes scanned the room—under the cold fluorescent lights, the partially covered body on the autopsy table, and Damine, slumped on the floor as if he'd aged ten years in an instant. Marcus frowned deeply. He shouted, trying to drown his unease with volume: "Damine! Look at yourself! Is this any way for a head of pack's guard force to behave? Explain yourself this instant!"But Damine didn't seem to hear him. He remained trapped in the hell of "Jocelyn is dead," his grip on the pendant so tight his knuckles were bloodless, as if it were the last warm connection he had to me. Following Ma

Suddenly realized something, Damine violently lifted his head. His gaze shot past the intern's shoulder, his eyes widening in horror as they locked onto that unnatural glint of cold metal from the artificial heart positioned where my own should have been."Mr. Ashwood?" the intern asked cautiously, taking an uneasy step back.Damine seemed not to hear him. "What... what situation... would require... an artificial heart?" The intern was so frightened by Damine's terrifying expression that he momentarily forgot to answer.I watched quietly from my position above and said quietly. "Because the original one was gone, of course, silly."Damine seemed to realize this fact simultaneously.A bizarre and terrifying thought crashed into his mind, stealing his breath.No... that's impossible..."No... it can't be..." he stammered, staggering forward as his legs gave out and collapsing beside my body. His fingers brushed against my cold, lifeless hand, and a choked sob escaped his throat. With e

Damine stood frozen in place, as if his very breath had been ripped from his lungs. His mind Ashwoodt completely blank, the sterile scent of the morgue suddenly overwhelming him.I... how could I be dead? The thought was so absurd it almost made him want to laugh, a hysterical sound that died in his throat.Just one day ago, I had been alive and standing before him. Even when he had said cruel things to me—things he instantly regretted—I would only turn pale and walk away silently, my shoulders slumping in a way that tore at his insides. No matter how many times he had thrown hurtful words at me, saying that Sera’s parents never should have saved me from that mudslide, he had never imagined that I would actually appear before him like this."How is this possible!" The words tore from his throat.Damine snapped back to reality. He hung up the phone and saw the electronic version of the autopsy report that had been sent to him. But no matter how many times he looked, the name on the do

Soon, the investigation group reported back. The phone had been submerged in water for too long and wouldn't power on. There were no fingerprints on the amulet either. But fortunately, the patrol guards seemed to have found surveillance footage of me before my death. As the head of the guard force, Damine didn't need to accompany them and check the evidence in person, yet for some reason, he felt an inexplicable urge to go along. When he saw my image in the surveillance footage, my brother was completely stunned. He mumbled blankly."Why does this person look so much like Sera?"The young assistant's expression darkened as he recalled my name from the missing persons report he'd seen earlier."Mr. Ashwood, is Jocelyn really still alive?"Was I really still alive?Damine's breath caught in his throat. He didn't dare to dwell on it.Fumbling with his phone, he scrolled for what felt like an eternity before finding my chat window at the very bottom. The last message was from me a month ag
