Chapter 2

Penulis: Eirlys
Early the next morning, the harsh ring of my phone shattered the quiet of my bedroom.

I picked it up. Mia’s name was flashing on the screen with a barrage of texts.

"Hester, did you ask around or not? Do you even know what's happening to the Crescent Pack?"

"The pack's funds are completely dried up. We're about to be liquidated and auctioned off! We'll be homeless!"

"How can you be so cold-blooded? Even if you're mad at us, you can't just watch our territory get destroyed, right? You grew up here too!"

I read them expressionlessly, tossed my phone onto the passenger seat, and started my sports car.

Moral kidnapping. Mia’s favorite trick.

When she needs you, you're family and you're in it together.

When she doesn't, you're a worthless stepping stone.

On the road, I got a call from an old acquaintance.

It was Anna from the Crescent Pack. We used to be on okay terms.

She sounded indignant. "Did you know Mia was talking about you at a party a few days ago? It's been years and she's still not tired of it."

"Saying what?"

"She said... she said you ran away from home because you were insanely jealous of her and Felix, and because you were too humiliated after failing to become Chief Beta." Anna paused, probing carefully. "She also said that the night you left, you stood under Felix's window in the pouring rain, crying your eyes out all night. She said you still don't have a mate because you're obsessed with Felix and can't let him go."

I let out a short, cold laugh.

"Is that right?"

"Everyone's gossiping about you, saying you're so pathetic and lovesick. Hester, did you really..."

"She's still terrible at making up stories," I cut her off bluntly. "Felix isn't charming enough for me to stand outside for a whole night."

"But Mia made it sound so real..."

"I left in the middle of the night, and it was pouring rain. I didn't tell anyone, and no one saw me off. Who could have possibly seen me crying under his window in the dead of night?" My voice was ice. "Tell anyone who likes to gossip to stop flattering themselves."

I hung up just as I hit a red light.

I picked up my phone. The family group chat was exploding again.

Mia: "My sister won't even reply to my messages. Is she still hating me for stealing Felix? But you can't force love."

Mother: "How dare she! She's an ungrateful wretch! Her own sister is facing such a huge crisis, and not only does she refuse to help, she plays dead!"

Father: "Cold-blooded. Once Felix secures this alliance today, we won't accept her apology even if she begs!"

I looked at the screen full of accusations, feeling absolutely nothing.

This was my family.

The light turned green. I muted my phone and slammed on the gas.

Arriving at the Crimson Pack headquarters, I walked straight into my private top-floor elevator.

Every inch of territory here, every rule, was built by my own hands.

Pushing open the doors to my office, I found Marcus already waiting.

"Alpha." Marcus handed me a black coffee, looking a bit amused. "A personal call just came through the front desk and got forwarded to my office."

I walked behind my massive desk and sat down. "Who?"

"The caller claimed to be your sister. She was fishing for information about your position and demanded to speak with you."

I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Mia never changed.

Stubborn, manipulative, acting like the whole world should pay for her tears. She was used to stepping on everyone, especially me.

"How did you handle it?" I took a sip of the coffee.

"I told her we don't disclose personal information and hung up," Marcus replied crisply.

I nodded in satisfaction. "Are the Crescent Pack files ready?"

"Everything is right here." Marcus pushed a thick stack of documents toward me. "Also, Felix is already downstairs."

I flipped open the file, scanning the horrific financial data.

"Treat him by the book. No special treatment, but don't give them a reason to gossip, either."

Just as I expected, a bankrupt Mia and my parents were desperate to cling to me as their last lifeline.Sure enough, Marcus soon reported in."This morning, Mia and your mother tried to force their way into our territory, but the guards stopped them. Mia threw a massive tantrum at the gates, crying and screaming that if you didn't see her, she would die right on the Crimson Pack's doorstep."My fingers stopped typing on my keyboard."She really lacks originality.""Indeed," Marcus sighed. "She's very good at playing the victim. She cried so hard that a few passersby actually went over to comfort her, thinking our security was being too heartless. Do you want me to send someone to chase them away?""Ignore them. As long as they don't set foot on our land, let her put on her little show." I turned back to my screen, feeling nothing at all.I used to envy Mia. I envied how she could get everything I fought tooth and nail for just by shedding a few tears. But now, thankfully, I am strong e

Three days later, I received another meeting request from Felix.Marcus frowned as he reported it. "Alpha, he's been waiting in the lobby for three hours. He says this is the very last time, and after this, he will absolutely never bother you again."I thought for a moment. "Send him up. I'll give him five minutes."A few minutes later, the door opened.Felix walked in. In just three days, he looked as if he had aged ten years. His blonde hair was dull, his eyes sunken, his jaw covered in stubble. He radiated absolute defeat. He sat down a few feet away from my desk, staring at me in silence. One minute, two minutes, three minutes."Two minutes left," I reminded him without looking up, my voice flat.Felix forced a bitter smile, his voice hoarse. "Hester... do we really have absolutely nothing left to say to each other?"I closed the file I was reading, slowly raised my head, and met his eyes with a calm, crimson gaze."We do." I leaned back in my leather chair, crossing my arms. "I ha

Less than two hours after the rejection file was sent, my true identity spread through the Crescent Pack.Exactly as expected, my phone rang quickly.Mia's name flashed on the screen.I answered and casually put it on speaker."Hester! What the hell are you playing at?!" Mia's furious, shrieking voice filled the office. "If you're the Alpha of the Crimson Pack, why didn't you say so?! You hid it from us this whole time just so you could watch us make fools of ourselves, didn't you?!"I leaned back in my chair, spinning a pen in my hand, my voice completely flat."You never asked, and you never cared. Why should I say anything?""You did it on purpose!" Mia screamed. "This is revenge! You're jealous that Felix chose me, jealous that I'm the Luna, so you intentionally made things difficult for him and ruined the alliance!""The Crescent territory's cash flow is broken, and its internal management is a mess," I stated coldly. "That is the professional conclusion of the Crimson Pack's asse

After Felix left, the landline on my desk rang.I picked it up, only to hear Felix's voice through the receiver."Hester, it's me. Please, don't hang up." His voice sounded desperate. "We can put the alliance aside for now. Let's just talk about our past feelings, okay?"My eyes were like ice, devoid of any warmth."If it's business, contact my Beta. If it's personal, we have nothing to talk about."Before he could speak again, I hit the end button and instructed the front desk to cut off all unofficial calls from the Crescent Pack.He didn't give up, trying a few more unfamiliar numbers. I rejected them all. After my afternoon meetings, I took my private elevator straight to the underground garage.Just as I was about to reach my sports car, a tall, dark figure suddenly stepped out from behind a pillar. It was Felix. He looked even more exhausted than he had in my office that morning. His eyes were bloodshot."Hester," he rasped, blocking my car door.I stopped and glared at him."Lo

Felix stood frozen in place, as if under a binding spell.Under the absolute dominance of the Crimson Pack Alpha, his legs gave out uncontrollably. He grabbed the back of the chair and stumbled into it, his eyes full of shock, panic, and sheer disbelief."Why... why are you here?" he stammered incoherently. "Mia said you were just... you... you're the Alpha of the Crimson Pack?!""I assumed your assistant already verified the meeting details," I cut off his shock with icy indifference.I had no interest in watching him fall apart."Let's get straight to business."I opened the Crescent Pack's alliance application on my desk without even looking at him."According to the financial statements and asset evaluations you submitted, the Crescent Pack's capital burn rate has reached extremely critical levels."I looked up, my gaze piercing him like a blade."Vanity projects and meaningless luxury spending make up thirty-nine percent of your total expenditures. Meanwhile, your investment in te

My phone lit up again. A long voice note from Mia.I tapped it. Her fake-sweet facade was completely torn away, her voice shrill and vicious."Hester, I'm warning you! If Felix's alliance falls through today, I'll tell everyone you used your job for personal revenge!""You're just jealous that my life is better than yours! You're jealous that Felix loves me!""If you dare ruin my life, I will never let you get away with it!"As soon as the voice note ended, a call came in.Mother.I answered, and before I could speak, a torrent of abuse hit me."Hester! Did you even listen to a word I said?! Your sister is crying her eyes out!""Let me tell you, if you mess this up today, don't you ever come back to this family! I'll pretend I never had you as a daughter!"Through the phone, I could faintly hear Mia's fake sobbing. "Mom, stop yelling at Hester... Maybe she really is just a bottom-tier Beta who isn't qualified to see the Alpha. It's normal that she can't help..."That only made my mothe
