KAIRA

“Good morning, Luna Kaira!” Maryl sang, sashaying across my chamber.

I slowly rose from my bed, releasing a long sigh. “I'm not the Luna, Maryl.” She gave me a knowing look, and a sheepish smile crept onto my lips. “At least not yet.”

“But you will be.” The maid pulled back the heavy velvet curtains, letting in the early morning sun. “We all know Alpha Jarith will soon announce it officially.” She winked at me and added, “If the Moon Goddess hadn't taken away our bonds, I'm sure you and he would have turned out to be fated mates.”

“I would have loved to feel we're destined to be together,” I admitted.

“You are destined,” she assured. Then she smoothed her blond curls and walked over to my bed. “Alpha Jarith should have officially claimed you months ago, right after the Great Battle. You basically won this war for him. Not to mention that you were the one who killed Alpha Callum—not him.”

I winced at her words. Only a few members of our pack knew the truth, but I was fine with Jarith taking all the so-called glory. Guess it looked better this way. The great leader, Alpha Jarith, the commander of the united packs of Sarendonia, killed the terrifying Alpha Callum, bringing peace after thirty years of war. It wouldn't sound as triumphant if the other alphas knew it was his future Luna who had killed the most fearful enemy…

“I heard what happened at the gathering,” Maryl went on, placing her hands on her hips. “The other alphas want to make Alpha Jarith the King of Sarendonia. That would make the Silver Mountain Pack the most important pack in our kingdom. The more he should declare you his Luna. The rumors begin to spread, you know?”

I leaped to my feet. “What rumors?”

She shrugged. “People say he used you and your skills, and now you're no longer needed.”

“That's absurd.” I huffed, shaking my head. “We love each other.”

Maryl smiled wryly. “I told them the same, but they didn't want to listen.”

My hands fisted. “Jarith loves me,” I said, nervously clenching the tear-shaped talisman pendant on my neck. “He's… just busy recently. Rebuilding cities and securing new borders takes time. It's not like he's avoiding me or excluding me… right?”

Maryl scratched her head. “Yeah… about that… Alpha told you about the delegation from the Eudoris kingdom coming today… right?”

This felt like a punch in the gut. “Um… what delegation?”

Maryl grimaced. “A few officials from the Fiery Mist Pack arrived an hour ago. I think their meeting with Alpha Jarith is about to start in a few minutes.”

My chest tightened. Jarith had always told me about every meeting he had. I was his trusted advisor. With my instincts and premonitions, I could predict the outcome of every conversation. So far, I had been the one to greet every official who had come to this castle. Had he forgotten to tell me?

Sucking in a sharp breath, I marched to my wardrobe. “Maryl, please help me get dressed. I can't be late for the meeting.”

***

The click-clack sound of my heels echoed through the corridor as I strode to the audience room. My heart thundered, and my palms began to sweat. I could hear my wolf spirit huffing in my head. She was restless. She could sense that something was off, and I could feel it, too. Yet, I shoved down my uneasiness and stretched my lips into a bright smile as I turned the knob and pushed the doors open.

The members of the delegation were about to take their seats at the long table. The ranked members of our pack stood on the opposite side while Jarith stopped behind the top seat, reserved for the Alpha. I closed the doors behind me, and his bright blue eyes met mine.

“I apologize for coming late, Alpha.” I curtsied and gave everyone a beaming smile.

Jarith ran his fingers through his golden, slightly ruffled hair. Then, he responded with a curt bow. “You're just in time, Kaira,” he said before gesturing to his left. “Take a seat. We're about to begin.”

I didn't miss the way his Beta looked at him, raising his brows in a silent question. Jarith gave him a meaningful look, and Beta Loan lowered his head. I knew they were talking through a mind link, and for the first time, I wasn't part of their conversation. Had they truly wanted to exclude me from this meeting? Grinding my teeth, I lifted my chin and walked to my seat.

“Kaira, these are the elders from the Fiery Mist Pack.” Jarith gestured at the three gray-haired men dressed in expensive jacquard coats.

My lips curved into a nervous half-smile as I bowed. “It's an honor to meet you.”

The men barely spared me a glance before turning to Jarith. “We've come to deliver great news, Alpha,” one of them said. “Princess Enora accepted your proposal. She will gladly become your Luna Queen.”

Their words knocked the air out of my lungs. This must have been some misunderstanding. I looked at the man I loved, but he avoided my gaze. No. Jarith would never have betrayed me like that. He couldn't have—

“Excellent. I was hoping to hear that.” My Alpha straightened in his seat and smiled at the Fiery Mist Pack's officials.

I pressed my hand to my chest, soothing the sudden ache. The pain only increased as I looked around the room and realized I must have been the only one who hadn't known. “I… apologize,” I mumbled as my eyes coated with tears. “I need to… go.” I slowly rose from my seat, wondering if my trembling legs were still strong enough to carry me out of that room.

‘Kaira, stay.’ Jarith's voice sounded through the mind link. He didn't even look at me as he tossed dryly, ‘I'll explain everything after the meeting.’

I felt another crack in my heart. I couldn't breathe. The layer of tears became heavy, threatening to stream down my cheeks. I gave everyone a curt nod before turning around and running out of the room.

“Kaira, wait!” Jarith's growl echoed through the corridor. “Stop!”

I didn't. I couldn't. I was on the verge of falling apart, and breaking into tears in the middle of the corridor was the last thing I wanted. Sucking in a shaky breath, I ran upstairs, heading to my room. Jarith followed me and locked the door behind us.

The first tear slid down as I turned around to face him. “You… want to marry… someone else?” I rasped. “You said… you love me. You told me… I would be your Luna.”

He dragged his hand over his face. “We need Eudoris, Kaira. This marriage will make me the ruler of two kingdoms.”

“So this is… about power?” I placed my trembling hand on my aching heart. “Is Sarendonia not enough? Am I… not enough?”

He huffed out a laugh. “You can't possibly compare yourself to the power of the entire kingdom.”

More tears streamed down my cheeks. “Love means more… than all kingdoms combined.”

“My sweet, naïve Kaira…” He prowled toward me, a dark smirk pulling at his lips. “I wish you could understand. Things could have been different then.”

He lurched forward. I barely noticed his extended claws before they sank into my flesh. A violent wave of pain tore through me. The sweet, coppery taste filled my mouth, and my body began to rattle. My eyes drifted to my bloodied chest. “Ja…rith,” I croaked.

“I have a final request for you, my love.” A cruel smile stretched across his lips as he dragged his claws down, ripping me open. “Die for me.”

A cry built in my throat, erupting with violence as the agony devoured me inch by inch. His vicious smile widened as he pulled out his claws and tore the talisman off my neck. I collapsed to the floor, knowing the end was near. I looked into his eyes, unable to recognize the man I had given my heart to. Now that heart was useless—it stopped beating…

A violent shudder coursed through me, forcing my eyes wide open. I could barely focus on what was in front of me. My chest heaved and fell at an erratic pace, and the pain, the blood—

I blinked, chasing away the blurriness. My trembling hand went to my chest; my gaze followed. No wounds. I was alive, and I was… sitting in the audience room. The meeting… I hadn't left. This had to be a vision—an incredibly vivid and terrifying one.

“Kaira, these are the elders from the Fiery Mist Pack.” Jarith's voice drew my attention to him. My insides twisted as he smiled at me and pointed at the three men from the Eudoris kingdom.

Cold sweat flooded my skin. I slowly turned to the finely dressed men, and a thick knot rose in my throat. I swallowed hard before mumbling, “It's an honor to meet you.”

The men ignored me, just like I knew they would. This couldn't be happening. I closed my eyes, bracing myself as one of the elders said, “We've come to deliver great news, Alpha. Princess Enora accepted your proposal. She will gladly become your Luna Queen.”

Nausea rose within me. The sickening feeling blended with the pain of betrayal. I looked at the man I loved, and my hands fisted. He had used me. He used my love for him.

Now he expected me to die…

  • My Fated Enemy   Dark Powers

KAIRAI was standing in front of a large cave, staring at its gloomy entrance. It was the rogues' lair that Nazo had mentioned. From his description, I had expected it to be bad, but this was far worse than I'd imagined.I stepped closer to a few rocks lying beside the entrance. They were coated with a thick, dark substance that stank worse than rotten meat, but it couldn't even compare to the stench coming from the inside of the cave.“I'm gonna throw up,” Rafe groaned, clamping his hand over his mouth.“Trust me,” Nazo grunted. “Be grateful you don't feel that smell as well as I do. Besides, it gets worse once you get in.” He jerked his chin, pointing at the cave.Next to me, Dearon cautiously examined our surroundings. “Rafe, stay outside. Throw up if you have to. The rest is coming with me,” he said before lighting his torch and striding into the cave.Torin and I exchanged looks and followed him. Something was utterly wrong with this place; I could feel it with every breath, almo

  • My Fated Enemy   Ask Her

DEARONI sat in the tent studying the maps and old messages, marking the potential rogue lairs. Drawing a deep breath, I grabbed a pen and circled the area about two miles from our current camp. It was supposed to be the largest lair in the eastern part of my kingdom—one of the greatest threats to the eastern villages. Countless omegas from those villages had already lived in constant terror, fearing that one day, the Eudoris armies might attack. The least we could do was eliminate the rogues plundering their territories…I raked my fingers through my hair and leaned back against the tent's pole. Deep inside, I knew I was stalling, delaying the inevitable. I could have sent one of the newly trained squads of warriors to handle the rogues, but I had chosen to do it myself instead. I'd told myself it had been a better and safer option. The rogues were savage and unpredictable, and our new squads were… well… new and certainly inexperienced. The pathetic truth, however, was that I had oth

  • My Fated Enemy   The Three Generals

KAIRAI stared at the old, scarred warrior, struggling to comprehend what he said. I had never heard about that Darcio. If the council members wanted him to take over Dearon's position, that must have meant he, too, was from the alpha bloodline—another Conaran, perhaps? But why would they need to look for him? Shouldn't the entire Korendorr's royal family live in Oryndale? My gaze shifted to Dearon, and I immediately felt the rage radiating from him. His claws came out and his eyes flared as he growled, “They must have lost their fucking minds to look for Darcio!”Rafe and Nazo joined Torin's side, pure dread in their eyes. Torin stepped forward, his hands balling. “Darcio was exiled by Alpha Alastor himself!” he spat. “No council member has the right to bring him back to Korendorr!”Morvan raised his hands in surrender, but I didn't miss the faint smirk that crossed his lips. “That is why Alpha needs to return at once,” he said before fixing his eyes on Dearon. “I promise you have my

  • My Fated Enemy   Morvan's Visit

DEARONIf I'd had a list of people I seriously did not want to see at that moment, Morvan would have been on fucking top of it. He had a unique ability to trigger my most violent urges on a usual day, and now, my blood had turned into molten lava even before I had seen his scarred face.“How did Morvan and others find us here?” Kaira asked as she nervously combed her hair with her fingers.I dragged my teeth over my lower lip. She was back in her tunic, and I already missed the sight of her bare, feverish, ready for me. The more I tasted her, the more I craved her. She was like the finest wine I had ever drunk, and I would have thanked the gods if I'd never sobered up from her.I met Kaira's confused stare. Only then did I realize I hadn't answered her question. “I wouldn't be surprised if he had his own spies near the Ardens Mountains or somewhere close to Alletia,” I said. “Not to mention, it was not a secret where we were heading.”“I guess you're right,” she murmured, putting on he

  • My Fated Enemy   Closer

I was sitting in Dearon's tent, leaning against the pole with my hands wrapped around my knees. My eyes were fixed on the wide bandage on Dearon's shoulder. He was asleep. Torin had cut out every last shred of silver, and with Nazo's herbal ointment, the wound had finally begun to heal. Dearon hadn't even flinched as the injury had been cleaned, but we all knew he would need a proper rest for his body to recover.“You don't need to sit here,” Torin murmured as he lifted the tent's flap and saw me inside. “You need to get some sleep, too. You've been through a lot…” Sympathy gleamed in his eyes.I had told everyone about Ahren, why he had tried to kill Dearon, and how he had died. Rafe had caught and killed the other assassin—a packless mercenary Ahren had hired. The threat was gone, but none of us felt relieved or satisfied. Instead, the nearly palpable frustration filled the entire camp. Perhaps it was fortunate that Dearon was asleep. He could rest well before hearing the news…“I w

  • My Fated Enemy   Because of Hatred

The time slowed as what had been a silver flash turned into an arrow aimed to pierce Dearon's chest. He now noticed it, too, because his eyes widened, and his claws began to come out. Not fast enough. Gods, he wouldn't make it. He couldn't stop the swirling arrowhead. But I could.A savage roar built in my throat as I leaped in front of him. My instincts pushed me, and all I could do was to trust them as they guided my sharp claws toward the speeding glint. Then the time resumed, and I could hear the incoming swish—I swung my hand, cutting the arrow shaft a split second before it pierced my flesh. I glanced as the pieces fell to the ground when more arrows flew. The air froze in my lungs as several silver flashes pierced through the leaves. I could barely register them all. I corrected my stance, raised my clawed hand, and—A dark shadow appeared in front of me. No, not shadow—Dearon. I stood, watching in awe as he cut the arrows down. His thunderous growl boomed through the forest,

  • My Fated Enemy   To Save Him

KAIRAMy heart kept thundering long after we'd returned on our horses and continued through the rough mountain path. Gods, I was seriously considering everything Dearon had told me… which could only mean I had joined my wolf and we were both having a death wish.I looked at Dearon, and wicked warmth washed over my face. The way he had touched me, kissed me, embraced me was nearly impossible to resist. I should have pushed him away. I should have stopped this sooner, but I couldn't, or, what was even more disturbing, I didn't want to.I should have treated Dearon as my enemy—my greatest enemy. The way I had been taught, I should have wanted him dead. My desires, however, traveled in the exact opposite direction…My frustration and restlessness were eating me alive. I had turned into this stupid little moth, flying straight into Dearon's powerful flame. It was bright, fucking hot, and it had already begun to sear my fragile wings, but I had no intention of stopping.“You all right, Kaira

  • My Fated Enemy   Drawn To Her

DEARONI had never thought I would find sleeping in the Demon's Mouth pleasant, but as I woke up with Kaira in my arms, I couldn't help but smile. Controlling myself in her presence still consumed my focus and strength, but at least I had managed to shut down my primal urges… for now.Breathing in her scent was like the perfect remedy for the cave's cold, the exhaustion stiffening my muscles, and even all my lingering problems. It was almost as if she could become the strength I needed.Strange. I knew so little about her, yet my instincts kept telling me I knew enough. As if I could easily accept her with everything she had and hadn't told me. As if she were the Fates' gift for me. As if she'd been made for me.I gently withdrew my arms from around her waist and under her neck and rubbed the sleep off my face. I almost laughed at myself. I had never spent a night simply embracing a woman and not even decently fucking her. That fact should have disturbed the holy shit out of me, but s

  • My Fated Enemy   Demon's Mouth

I could barely focus on the road ahead. My fingers were curled tightly around the reins. I kept my back unnaturally straightened, and every few seconds, I had to remind myself how to breathe.I should have known. Gods, I should have figured it out sooner. The way he seemed to know about everything, his impossibly quiet steps, the lack of scent—Ahren was a spy. He had been trained to become one… but trained by whom?I still couldn't comprehend why he had chosen to work for the kingdom he so deeply hated. Or maybe this hadn't been his choice at all. What if he had been forced to work for the Silver Mountain Pack? I could hardly stomach that thought, but I had learned enough recently to know it was possible. The only consolation was that his assignment for Jarith seemed to be over. He could finally reunite with his sister, and—“His sister,” I breathed out as my insides clenched.Ahren had claimed that his sister was somewhere safe and that he had to work for both of them. What if… she h
