“Excellent. I was hoping to hear that.”
I slowly turned toward Jarith, taking in every bit of smugness written on his face. My heart thundered against my ribcage, my pain and rage blending and growing stronger. My wolf roared, rushing me out of that room, away from the man who betrayed me. But I had already known how this scenario would end…
I ground my teeth, struggling to put my hectic thoughts in order. I had always been able to see glimpses of the future. I had used them to guide me or choose the right strategy in the battle. My gift appeared in brief and vague premonitions but never in a vision as precise as the one I'd just had.
I clenched the talisman hanging around my neck. I didn't believe it had any special powers. I valued it because it was the only thing I had left of my mother, but why would Jarith want it?
The bastard didn't even spare me a glance as he casually discussed his upcoming marriage with the Fiery Mist Pack's elders. He dared laugh as he mentioned the mating ceremony and the first night with his soon-to-be queen.
I felt I might vomit. I wanted to draw my claws across his face and tear that disgusting smile. Hot tears stung my eyes, but I quickly blinked them back. I was in a room filled with predators, and one wrong move could result in my death.
I placed my fisted hands on my lap, my nails digging into the skin of my palms. I knew Jarith or others wouldn't dare hurt me in front of the officials, but what would happen after the meeting?
I corrected my mask and stretched my lips into a pleasant smile while planning my escape. Our pack's territory was right by the Sarendonia's border. I could either run south, passing the lands of other Sarendonia packs until I reached the neutral kingdom of Dagonrel, or I could choose north and find myself in Korendorr—the kingdom of our enemy.
Alpha Callum might have been dead and his Moon Shadow Pack destroyed, but it sure as three hells didn't deem their lands safe. On the other hand, should I choose south, I would have to get through the lands of Jarith's countless allies and supporters…
I felt Jarith's gaze on me and slowly turned to face him. He locked his blue eyes on me. ‘Are you all right, my love?’
The endearment had never sounded more sickening. To think he had the audacity to use those words while discussing marrying someone else. Did he think I would just sit here and accept his betrayal as if it were nothing?! I barely suppressed the shudder but somehow managed to answer, ‘It's just a headache.’
‘Maybe you should go to your room and rest. I'll visit you later.’ His lips curved, but the smile didn't reach his eyes.
I kept my voice neutral and calm as I answered through the link. ‘Perhaps I should lie down for a while.’
When he nodded in permission, I slowly rose from my seat and excused myself from the meeting. It was a struggle to even my steps as I walked to the door. Two guards followed me, doubtlessly sent by Jarith and not to protect me.
I walked the long hall with an endless row of windows on one side. The storm clouds gathered, stealing the daylight, as if even the heavens knew what was about to happen. Breathing out a curse, I turned into a narrow corridor. The guards—two muscle towers, designed to kill—walked two steps behind me. Their large shadows flooded the space with eerie darkness.
I quickened my pace while hectically scanning my surroundings. The nearest staircase was at the end of the corridor. There was no door, no additional turns, no way to run. Shit, shit, shit!
My instincts screamed, forcing me to leap to the side as the bulky guards charged. I spun in time to avoid one's fist, but the other one dragged his claws along my side. “Die, bitch!” His dark laughter echoed through the corridor.
Groaning in pain, I stumbled back. A stream of blood flowed from the side of my ribs. My heart thundered. My mind raced. I had to run. I had to—
My eyes locked on the entrance to the servants' passage. It was narrow—too narrow for the massive men to move with ease. I whirled around and stormed to the door.
“Get back here, bitch!” I could hear the guards' roar but didn't dare look over my shoulder.
Dropping off my shoes, I leaped into the passage. I stormed through the dimly illuminated corridor and the steep wooden stairs. I took a turn after turn, nearly knocking over a few pale omegas on the way.
“There's no way to run!” The guards' voices echoed behind me. “Just surrender!”
I clenched my teeth and ran even faster, heading to another staircase. I stormed down the creaking steps and turned left as I reached the ground floor. The doors leading to the courtyard appeared in sight, but the icy tingling on the nape of my neck pulled me to a halt.
My instincts were never wrong. Growling out a curse, I whirled around and ran in the opposite direction. Several heartbeats passed, and the doors behind me slammed open, the guards led by Beta Loan pouring into the passage.
“Get her!” he roared.
The bastards blocked my only way to the southern courtyard. They must have thought I wouldn't risk going anywhere near the northern border. Truthfully, I would have never chosen this route willingly, but since I didn't have much choice…
The muscles in my legs burned as I pushed through the slim hallway, heading to the northern side of the castle. I could hear the countless stomping feet pounding behind me, and a bitter smile curved my lips. The bastard could have just exiled me. Why was he so determined to see me dead?
I burst through the door and darted through the half-empty northern courtyard. The thunder roared in the sky, and the first raindrops began to fall. A few guards noticed me and turned in my direction. “She's over there!” one of them yelled as others started to shift.
I clenched my tear-shaped necklace and darted forward, heading to the first line of trees. I glanced over my shoulder and saw five snarling beasts running after me. Fuck. I had to turn into my wolf form, and I had to do it now!
I used my claws to cut my clothing, the fabric falling to the ground as I ran. The growls and snarls echoed behind me as the sky responded with another thunder. Then, the rain began to pour…
“Kaira, stop!” Loan's voice boomed through the courtyard. “Give us the talisman, and the Alpha will let you live!”
Humorless laughter tore through my throat. Did he seriously think I would believe that?! I let my undergarments fall to the rain-soaked ground, leaving nothing but the talisman around my neck. A heartbeat later, I shifted and stormed into the woods. My heart pounded at a vicious, nearly painful rate. I was about to reach the border. Not only would I leave my pack, but I would abandon my kingdom…
The growls and snarls behind me faded. Did they stop chasing me? The restlessness within me grew. I was too exhausted. My paws trembled slightly as I ran uphill. My eyes locked on the shattered rocks marking the border between the kingdoms. I needed a moment to rest and clear my head, but I couldn't risk taking a break. Maybe once I crossed the border, I could—
Chills rushed down my spine, and all my muscles tensed. I scanned the nearby trees, the shadows dancing between them. My breath caught in my throat as Jarith's icy laughter filled my mind.
He and six warriors emerged from behind the trees in front of me. Jarith's dark gray wolf stepped forward. ‘Give me the talisman, Kaira, and I promise you a swift death.’ His red-blazing eyes fixed on me as he bared his teeth. ‘Resist, and it will be an extremely painful one.’
I could only guess, but getting the best rooms and food in every town must have been one of the perks of being the Alpha and the future king of Korendorr. Anyway, that was what had happened as soon as we appeared in Evenloor. The news of our arrival must have travelled with the wind because the town's elder, along with the tavern owner, the inn's owner, and the chief of the guards, rushed to welcome us before we even reached the center. After receiving an awkwardly official greeting, we'd been escorted to the finest rooms in the inn. Mine had a separate bath chamber and a small balcony overlooking the lake. It felt strange to end up in such luxuries after days of sleeping in tents or caves, but I sure as three hells wouldn't call that change unwelcome.A knock on the door sounded, and I rushed to open it. “Lady Kaira, I'm here to serve you,” said a blue-eyed blonde girl standing in the corridor. She couldn't be more than sixteen years old, yet she was dressed in a maid's uniform and c
KAIRAI was standing in front of a large cave, staring at its gloomy entrance. It was the rogues' lair that Nazo had mentioned. From his description, I had expected it to be bad, but this was far worse than I'd imagined.I stepped closer to a few rocks lying beside the entrance. They were coated with a thick, dark substance that stank worse than rotten meat, but it couldn't even compare to the stench coming from the inside of the cave.“I'm gonna throw up,” Rafe groaned, clamping his hand over his mouth.“Trust me,” Nazo grunted. “Be grateful you don't feel that smell as well as I do. Besides, it gets worse once you get in.” He jerked his chin, pointing at the cave.Next to me, Dearon cautiously examined our surroundings. “Rafe, stay outside. Throw up if you have to. The rest is coming with me,” he said before lighting his torch and striding into the cave.Torin and I exchanged looks and followed him. Something was utterly wrong with this place; I could feel it with every breath, almo
DEARONI sat in the tent studying the maps and old messages, marking the potential rogue lairs. Drawing a deep breath, I grabbed a pen and circled the area about two miles from our current camp. It was supposed to be the largest lair in the eastern part of my kingdom—one of the greatest threats to the eastern villages. Countless omegas from those villages had already lived in constant terror, fearing that one day, the Eudoris armies might attack. The least we could do was eliminate the rogues plundering their territories…I raked my fingers through my hair and leaned back against the tent's pole. Deep inside, I knew I was stalling, delaying the inevitable. I could have sent one of the newly trained squads of warriors to handle the rogues, but I had chosen to do it myself instead. I'd told myself it had been a better and safer option. The rogues were savage and unpredictable, and our new squads were… well… new and certainly inexperienced. The pathetic truth, however, was that I had oth
KAIRAI stared at the old, scarred warrior, struggling to comprehend what he said. I had never heard about that Darcio. If the council members wanted him to take over Dearon's position, that must have meant he, too, was from the alpha bloodline—another Conaran, perhaps? But why would they need to look for him? Shouldn't the entire Korendorr's royal family live in Oryndale? My gaze shifted to Dearon, and I immediately felt the rage radiating from him. His claws came out and his eyes flared as he growled, “They must have lost their fucking minds to look for Darcio!”Rafe and Nazo joined Torin's side, pure dread in their eyes. Torin stepped forward, his hands balling. “Darcio was exiled by Alpha Alastor himself!” he spat. “No council member has the right to bring him back to Korendorr!”Morvan raised his hands in surrender, but I didn't miss the faint smirk that crossed his lips. “That is why Alpha needs to return at once,” he said before fixing his eyes on Dearon. “I promise you have my
DEARONIf I'd had a list of people I seriously did not want to see at that moment, Morvan would have been on fucking top of it. He had a unique ability to trigger my most violent urges on a usual day, and now, my blood had turned into molten lava even before I had seen his scarred face.“How did Morvan and others find us here?” Kaira asked as she nervously combed her hair with her fingers.I dragged my teeth over my lower lip. She was back in her tunic, and I already missed the sight of her bare, feverish, ready for me. The more I tasted her, the more I craved her. She was like the finest wine I had ever drunk, and I would have thanked the gods if I'd never sobered up from her.I met Kaira's confused stare. Only then did I realize I hadn't answered her question. “I wouldn't be surprised if he had his own spies near the Ardens Mountains or somewhere close to Alletia,” I said. “Not to mention, it was not a secret where we were heading.”“I guess you're right,” she murmured, putting on he
I was sitting in Dearon's tent, leaning against the pole with my hands wrapped around my knees. My eyes were fixed on the wide bandage on Dearon's shoulder. He was asleep. Torin had cut out every last shred of silver, and with Nazo's herbal ointment, the wound had finally begun to heal. Dearon hadn't even flinched as the injury had been cleaned, but we all knew he would need a proper rest for his body to recover.“You don't need to sit here,” Torin murmured as he lifted the tent's flap and saw me inside. “You need to get some sleep, too. You've been through a lot…” Sympathy gleamed in his eyes.I had told everyone about Ahren, why he had tried to kill Dearon, and how he had died. Rafe had caught and killed the other assassin—a packless mercenary Ahren had hired. The threat was gone, but none of us felt relieved or satisfied. Instead, the nearly palpable frustration filled the entire camp. Perhaps it was fortunate that Dearon was asleep. He could rest well before hearing the news…“I w
The time slowed as what had been a silver flash turned into an arrow aimed to pierce Dearon's chest. He now noticed it, too, because his eyes widened, and his claws began to come out. Not fast enough. Gods, he wouldn't make it. He couldn't stop the swirling arrowhead. But I could.A savage roar built in my throat as I leaped in front of him. My instincts pushed me, and all I could do was to trust them as they guided my sharp claws toward the speeding glint. Then the time resumed, and I could hear the incoming swish—I swung my hand, cutting the arrow shaft a split second before it pierced my flesh. I glanced as the pieces fell to the ground when more arrows flew. The air froze in my lungs as several silver flashes pierced through the leaves. I could barely register them all. I corrected my stance, raised my clawed hand, and—A dark shadow appeared in front of me. No, not shadow—Dearon. I stood, watching in awe as he cut the arrows down. His thunderous growl boomed through the forest,
KAIRAMy heart kept thundering long after we'd returned on our horses and continued through the rough mountain path. Gods, I was seriously considering everything Dearon had told me… which could only mean I had joined my wolf and we were both having a death wish.I looked at Dearon, and wicked warmth washed over my face. The way he had touched me, kissed me, embraced me was nearly impossible to resist. I should have pushed him away. I should have stopped this sooner, but I couldn't, or, what was even more disturbing, I didn't want to.I should have treated Dearon as my enemy—my greatest enemy. The way I had been taught, I should have wanted him dead. My desires, however, traveled in the exact opposite direction…My frustration and restlessness were eating me alive. I had turned into this stupid little moth, flying straight into Dearon's powerful flame. It was bright, fucking hot, and it had already begun to sear my fragile wings, but I had no intention of stopping.“You all right, Kaira
DEARONI had never thought I would find sleeping in the Demon's Mouth pleasant, but as I woke up with Kaira in my arms, I couldn't help but smile. Controlling myself in her presence still consumed my focus and strength, but at least I had managed to shut down my primal urges… for now.Breathing in her scent was like the perfect remedy for the cave's cold, the exhaustion stiffening my muscles, and even all my lingering problems. It was almost as if she could become the strength I needed.Strange. I knew so little about her, yet my instincts kept telling me I knew enough. As if I could easily accept her with everything she had and hadn't told me. As if she were the Fates' gift for me. As if she'd been made for me.I gently withdrew my arms from around her waist and under her neck and rubbed the sleep off my face. I almost laughed at myself. I had never spent a night simply embracing a woman and not even decently fucking her. That fact should have disturbed the holy shit out of me, but s
