Chapter 2

Author: Seeky
Pain ripped through me as I severed our mate bond, sending my body into spasms and leaving my back drenched in sweat.

I bit the inside of my cheek, staggered past Carl, and headed deeper into the shrine.

Carl went pale, but his pride wouldn't let him show weakness. He gritted his teeth and fought through the pain of our severed bond.

"Vera, did you stage all this just to force me to mark you?"

He grabbed my wrist.

The instant we touched, pain from our severed bond ripped through us both.

Carl grunted and staggered.

Carl was too proud to let go, even as the pain tore through him.

"I'm ordering you to get the hell out of the central territory! Find someone else to mark you for all I care. Just do me a favor and stop pretending you're my mate. You make me sick!"

I turned and studied his face in silence. I didn't even have the strength to be angry.

I already knew how he felt, but his words still cut deep.

My heart had raced last night when he told me to wear a wedding dress and promised to mark me.

I thought the mate I'd given half my life for had finally seen how much I loved him.

But a few hours later, I overheard them talking.

"Alpha, that idiot Vera actually thinks you're going to mark her tomorrow."

His Beta added with a sneer, "She should take a good look at herself. She's just jealous of Ms. Vale. That's why she keeps clinging to the mate bond."

Carl snapped, "That damn mate bond is nothing but a burden. Just seeing her face every day makes me sick."

"Then why'd you go out of your way to tell her to wear a wedding dress to the Moon Goddess statue tomorrow?"

Carl gave a soft laugh.

"I'm bored. Let's make a bet. All I have to do is say the word, and she'll show up tomorrow in a wedding dress, ready to make a fool of herself. If I win, I get the northern hunting grounds."

The group burst out laughing.

The Gamma chimed in with a laugh. "Ha! You sure know how to have fun, Alpha! But seriously, if Ms. Vale wore a wedding dress, her curves would make Vera look like—"

Thud!

Before he could finish, Carl flew into a rage and punched him so hard he went flying.

"Shut your filthy mouth!" Carl snarled. "Who gave you the right to talk about Aurora like that? Say one more word against her, and I'll rip your mouth open!"

I hid in the shadows, both hands clamped over my mouth, choking back a sob.

That was the man I'd loved for 18 years.

I'd dreamed countless times of marrying the Alpha I loved.

But now he'd crushed those dreams himself and was trying to push me onto another wolf.

The Alpha who used to fight anyone who touched a single hair on my head was dead and gone.

After the wedding, I sat on the couch, still struggling to believe any of it was real.I thought Rhys would be furious with me, maybe even divorce me.After all, ours was only an arranged marriage. There were no feelings between us.I thought he'd keep his distance once the ceremony was over.Instead, he poured me a glass of warm water. He even personally silenced the Elders when they complained about me losing my healing power."Why?"Finally, I asked the question that had been nagging at me. "You're the Alpha King. Why would you go along with what the elders arranged and mark a useless wolf like me who can't even shift?"Rhys laughed softly. He walked over to me and took a dried herb out of his pocket.I stared at it in confusion. "What is this?"Rhys looked into my eyes and said in a low, rough voice, "This engagement wasn't something the elders came up with on a whim. I asked for it."I searched my memory until the answer finally surfaced. When I was eighteen, shortly before a pack

Carl was sent flying. He hit the floor and rolled over a dozen times before coming to a stop. Then he began crawling toward me on his hands and knees."Vera... forgive me... please take back your rejection..."I looked down at him without emotion."Carl, what exactly do I owe you? Why won't you let me go?"Carl crawled to my feet, sobbing."You don't owe me anything... I'm the one to blame! I never even liked Aurora! I only got together with her to make you jealous, to make you beg me!"Gasps went up all over the hall.Carl broke down, sobbing. "You had that precious healing power, while I was almost crippled! I was jealous. I felt worthless! I was terrified another family would take you and your healing power!"So all I could do was make one bet after another and humiliate you over and over. I wanted to prove to everyone that no matter how badly I treated you, you'd never leave me!"Tears streamed down Carl's face as he waited for me to answer. But I just looked him in the eye and sai

The elevator doors slid slowly open on the top floor.I stepped out.Two rows of fully armed royal guards dropped to one knee and called out, "Alpha King! Luna Queen!"I didn't look at Carl, but I could pretty much guess the look on his face. The ballroom doors swung open. The hall was filled with the highest-ranking werewolf Elders from across the Americas, including several I'd saved with my healing power as a child. My parents came over to greet us, beaming. "Vera, my precious girl, may the Moon Goddess bless you both!"Behind me, Carl saw my parents and blurted out, "Mr. and Mrs. Hale, what are you doing here?"The second my mom saw Carl, her smile vanished. She had seen everything Carl put me through over the years, and she had no warmth left for him."Carl, are you here for Vera's wedding too?"You've been Vera's friend for so many years, and you couldn't even dress up for her wedding? You're embarrassing her."Carl froze. He looked around and realized the room was filled with pa

I followed Rhys to the ballroom.Carl and his crowd had gotten there first. They stood a little way off, watching me with obvious amusement.Aurora sighed and shook her head at me. "Vera, lying never ends well. Why do this to yourself?"Everyone was waiting to watch me make a fool of myself.I shrank back on instinct, afraid of whatever was about to happen.Rhys stopped walking. He turned around, his voice low and gentle. "Don't be afraid. The wedding I promised you is real. All of it."Should I believe him?Carl had once promised to give me the grandest coming-of-age ceremony the pack had ever seen on the day of my first shift. But when the day came, he gave the ring to Aurora right in front of everyone.I was already a useless wolf who could barely shift.Even so, I had endured every second of agony and forced myself to shift because of his promise.I thought it was my coming-of-age ceremony, proof that all the suffering had finally paid off.Instead, it turned into Carl's grand decl

I left the fountain and went back to Rhys.He looked at me, then suddenly leaned in and touched the back of my neck."I'm sorry. I used too much strength just now. I scared you."He sounded annoyed with himself."I didn't want to rush it. I wanted to give you more time to get used to this marriage. But I was afraid that if I waited even one second longer, someone would take you away again."My face went hot. It sounded as though we'd known each other before. But we'd never even met.I couldn't bring myself to look at him. I looked down and said quietly, "It's not your fault. I was just caught off guard."Rhys laughed softly and held out his hand to me.I knew Carl and his crowd were still outside, waiting to watch me make a fool of myself. So I put my hand firmly in Rhys's palm.Rhys drew me in until I was pressed against his chest."Now that the mark is done, every part of you, body and soul, belongs only to me."A shiver ran through me. My legs went weak, and I leaned into his arms o

Rhys carried me to the altar. He set me down, and together we underwent the Moon Goddess's blessing ritual. It had all happened so fast. I still felt dazed.I said softly, "Thank you."Rhys lowered his head a little, and his gaze fell on the side of my neck. The high priest stepped aside respectfully. "Please release your spiritual energies and let them resonate."Rhys leaned in and marked my neck, claiming me as his mate."You don't have to feel like you owe me."Rhys immediately sensed my tension and gently brushed a thumb across the corner of my eye. "This is what I'm supposed to do."I made an excuse to go wash up at the fountain. I needed somewhere to calm down. When I got there, I overheard Carl and his group talking. His Beta's voice was shaking. "Alpha, that's the Alpha King. We'd better not mess with him."Carl scoffed. "That engagement fell through ages ago! That guy's obviously some fraud Vera hired to put on a show! She'll do anything to make me jealous!"The others quickly
