Chapter 3

Author: Seeky
I looked at Carl's face, twisted with pain, and shook my head. I was about to pull my hand free when Aurora Vale suddenly called out, "Carl!"

At the sound of her voice, Carl let go of my hand.

As if to show Aurora where his loyalty lay, he even pulled a tissue out of his pocket and wiped his hand.

Like I was something dirty.

Aurora walked over to Carl. "Carl, what are you doing here? Didn't you say you'd wait for me at home?

"Oh my God, Vera, you're in a wedding dress... Are you trying to force Carl to mark you again?"

Carl glanced around nervously. There was no way he'd admit to a highborn female Alpha that he'd made a bet out of humiliating his fated mate.

In a panic, Carl reached into the crowd, yanked out a runt, and shoved him up next to me.

"Ha, Aurora, you got it! Today's the day Vera bonds with this runt! We all came to cheer her on!"

The Betas around him chimed in right away. "Yeah, yeah! We all came to support Vera!"

I looked at the drooling runt beside me and felt sick.

The pain of the broken bond left me too weak to argue.

Aurora looked a little suspicious.

Seeing Aurora's suspicion, Carl shoved both of us toward the shrine.

"Go on! Don't waste everybody's time!"

The lowly runt got bold and pressed up against me. "Heh, I'm willing to mark you..."

His stench hit me, and I snapped. I shoved him away, clutched my chest, and gasped for air.

Carl burst out laughing. "Look at her panting! I bet she's been fooling around with this runt for ages. They're made for each other!"

"Carl, how could you say that?"

Aurora smiled sweetly. "Congratulations, Vera! You've finally found someone. His bloodline might be inferior, but that's still better than ending up alone, isn't it?"

I fought through the agony tearing at my soul and fixed Carl with an icy stare.

"I am bonding today. But not with this piece of trash. My family arranged my engagement a long time ago. He's already waiting for me at the altar."

The smile froze on Carl's face.

Just then, my phone rang.

Before coming to the square and going along with his cruel prank, I'd still held on to one last shred of hope.

After all these years together, I'd believed he must have felt something for me, even without the mate bond.

That final hope died when I watched him humiliate me in public to please Aurora.

As laughter closed in around me, I opened the message thread from the unknown number and sent my reply.

The sudden ringtone cut through the jeers.

I answered and murmured a few words of agreement.

"I've made up my mind. I won't regret it. Okay, I'll go in first and wait for you."

I turned to Carl, who'd gone stiff, and calmly explained, "I'm wearing white because my husband is going to give me the grandest marking ceremony there is."

I unzipped my bag, took out a stack of invitations, and handed them out one by one.

"Tonight is my wedding. Everyone's welcome to come!"

Finally, I walked up to Carl and held out an invitation.

His expression darkened. He stepped back half a pace and flatly refused to take the invitation.

"What? Too scared to take it?"

I gave him a cold stare.

"Scared? Ha!"

Carl's face was full of scorn.

"Vera, have you lost your mind? How much did you spend on all this worthless paper just to hand it out?"

He stepped closer and sneered, "You'll stoop to anything just to make me jealous and get me to mark you!

"Do you take us all for fools? You think a few invitations will convince me you can fight your instincts and bond with someone else? You can't live without me!"

A few Betas who'd received invitations began whispering. One of them said, "Look! It's got an Alpha's personal insignia!"

"You're right! Did she actually manage to snag an Alpha?"

  • My Fated Mate Faked Our Wedding, So I Married the Alpha King   Chapter 11

After the wedding, I sat on the couch, still struggling to believe any of it was real.I thought Rhys would be furious with me, maybe even divorce me.After all, ours was only an arranged marriage. There were no feelings between us.I thought he'd keep his distance once the ceremony was over.Instead, he poured me a glass of warm water. He even personally silenced the Elders when they complained about me losing my healing power."Why?"Finally, I asked the question that had been nagging at me. "You're the Alpha King. Why would you go along with what the elders arranged and mark a useless wolf like me who can't even shift?"Rhys laughed softly. He walked over to me and took a dried herb out of his pocket.I stared at it in confusion. "What is this?"Rhys looked into my eyes and said in a low, rough voice, "This engagement wasn't something the elders came up with on a whim. I asked for it."I searched my memory until the answer finally surfaced. When I was eighteen, shortly before a pack

Carl was sent flying. He hit the floor and rolled over a dozen times before coming to a stop. Then he began crawling toward me on his hands and knees."Vera... forgive me... please take back your rejection..."I looked down at him without emotion."Carl, what exactly do I owe you? Why won't you let me go?"Carl crawled to my feet, sobbing."You don't owe me anything... I'm the one to blame! I never even liked Aurora! I only got together with her to make you jealous, to make you beg me!"Gasps went up all over the hall.Carl broke down, sobbing. "You had that precious healing power, while I was almost crippled! I was jealous. I felt worthless! I was terrified another family would take you and your healing power!"So all I could do was make one bet after another and humiliate you over and over. I wanted to prove to everyone that no matter how badly I treated you, you'd never leave me!"Tears streamed down Carl's face as he waited for me to answer. But I just looked him in the eye and sai

The elevator doors slid slowly open on the top floor.I stepped out.Two rows of fully armed royal guards dropped to one knee and called out, "Alpha King! Luna Queen!"I didn't look at Carl, but I could pretty much guess the look on his face. The ballroom doors swung open. The hall was filled with the highest-ranking werewolf Elders from across the Americas, including several I'd saved with my healing power as a child. My parents came over to greet us, beaming. "Vera, my precious girl, may the Moon Goddess bless you both!"Behind me, Carl saw my parents and blurted out, "Mr. and Mrs. Hale, what are you doing here?"The second my mom saw Carl, her smile vanished. She had seen everything Carl put me through over the years, and she had no warmth left for him."Carl, are you here for Vera's wedding too?"You've been Vera's friend for so many years, and you couldn't even dress up for her wedding? You're embarrassing her."Carl froze. He looked around and realized the room was filled with pa

I followed Rhys to the ballroom.Carl and his crowd had gotten there first. They stood a little way off, watching me with obvious amusement.Aurora sighed and shook her head at me. "Vera, lying never ends well. Why do this to yourself?"Everyone was waiting to watch me make a fool of myself.I shrank back on instinct, afraid of whatever was about to happen.Rhys stopped walking. He turned around, his voice low and gentle. "Don't be afraid. The wedding I promised you is real. All of it."Should I believe him?Carl had once promised to give me the grandest coming-of-age ceremony the pack had ever seen on the day of my first shift. But when the day came, he gave the ring to Aurora right in front of everyone.I was already a useless wolf who could barely shift.Even so, I had endured every second of agony and forced myself to shift because of his promise.I thought it was my coming-of-age ceremony, proof that all the suffering had finally paid off.Instead, it turned into Carl's grand decl

I left the fountain and went back to Rhys.He looked at me, then suddenly leaned in and touched the back of my neck."I'm sorry. I used too much strength just now. I scared you."He sounded annoyed with himself."I didn't want to rush it. I wanted to give you more time to get used to this marriage. But I was afraid that if I waited even one second longer, someone would take you away again."My face went hot. It sounded as though we'd known each other before. But we'd never even met.I couldn't bring myself to look at him. I looked down and said quietly, "It's not your fault. I was just caught off guard."Rhys laughed softly and held out his hand to me.I knew Carl and his crowd were still outside, waiting to watch me make a fool of myself. So I put my hand firmly in Rhys's palm.Rhys drew me in until I was pressed against his chest."Now that the mark is done, every part of you, body and soul, belongs only to me."A shiver ran through me. My legs went weak, and I leaned into his arms o

Rhys carried me to the altar. He set me down, and together we underwent the Moon Goddess's blessing ritual. It had all happened so fast. I still felt dazed.I said softly, "Thank you."Rhys lowered his head a little, and his gaze fell on the side of my neck. The high priest stepped aside respectfully. "Please release your spiritual energies and let them resonate."Rhys leaned in and marked my neck, claiming me as his mate."You don't have to feel like you owe me."Rhys immediately sensed my tension and gently brushed a thumb across the corner of my eye. "This is what I'm supposed to do."I made an excuse to go wash up at the fountain. I needed somewhere to calm down. When I got there, I overheard Carl and his group talking. His Beta's voice was shaking. "Alpha, that's the Alpha King. We'd better not mess with him."Carl scoffed. "That engagement fell through ages ago! That guy's obviously some fraud Vera hired to put on a show! She'll do anything to make me jealous!"The others quickly
