Chapter 4

Author: Seeky
Carl's mouth twisted, his eyes full of contempt.

"Shut up! You bunch of idiots!"

He didn't even look at it. He tossed the invitation on the ground and stepped on it.

"You expect me to touch this cheap forgery? I wouldn't dirty my hands with it."

"Oh, Carl, how could you treat Vera like that?"

Aurora sighed and glanced at the invitation on the ground.

"Vera, you made up the name on the invitation too, didn't you?"

She stepped forward, took my hand, and tried to reason with me.

"I know how deep your feelings for Carl run. What you said just now was a joke, wasn't it? Hurry up and apologize to Carl. He'll forgive you."

Carl rushed to reassure Aurora, "Aurora, don't get the wrong idea. She and I have nothing to do with each other anymore!"

Aurora smiled.

"I believe you, Carl. That bond is in the past."

Then she looked at me.

"Vera, don't do anything stupid. Come on, I'll help you get out of that wedding dress."

The crowd immediately chimed in. "Ms. Vale really is a class above the rest! She's even kind to a woman who won't leave Carl alone!"

I tried to pull my hand away, but Aurora suddenly grabbed the collar of my wedding dress.

"Oh my God, Vera! Your wedding dress doesn't even have an authenticity chip sewn into the lining?"

She looked at me with pity.

"You rented this secondhand, didn't you? You don't have to go to such lengths just to keep up appearances."

Carl's smirk widened.

He wrapped an arm around Aurora's waist and kissed her hair.

"Aurora, you're too kind. A shameless woman like Vera doesn't deserve your pity!"

I clenched my fists.

"My fiancé had this dress custom-made. He's waiting for me inside the temple!"

"Still keeping up that lie?"

Carl cut me off, his voice rising. "If your fiancé's inside, then call him out here! What, is he some ghost who can't come out in daylight? Some stray you hired in the slums for a couple of bucks? Or some lowlife wolf who can't even take human form, so you're too embarrassed to show him off?!"

"Carl, don't push it."

I gritted my teeth and glared at him.

I remembered a time when we'd both been injured while fighting rogues. I'd risked my life to save every drop of high-grade nutrient serum for Carl.

And what did he do? Right in front of me, he fed it to Aurora's pet dog.

Even after I passed out from low blood sugar, he punished me by making me stand guard in the freezing rain, all because I'd gotten the hem of Aurora's dog's dress dirty.

Tears welled up, but I forced them back.

Carl shot me a challenging look.

"I'm going too far? You're the one making a complete fool of yourself!

"Go on! Call him out here now! Let him see the rags his bride is wearing!

"If an Alpha actually shows up today to marry you, I'll get down on my knees in front of the whole pack and lick the soles of your shoes clean!"

The runt from earlier jumped forward and shouted, "Don't believe her! She's just trying to seduce someone into marking her. She's a filthy slut!"

The pack closed in, forcing me backward until I was out of the center of the square.

A cold wind swept past, and I shivered in my thin wedding dress.

Aurora rubbed her arm, and Carl immediately took off his jacket and draped it over her.

He advanced on me, his expression icy.

"Apologize now! If Aurora catches a chill because of you, I'll throw you in the dungeon!"

I lowered my head. My whole body went cold.

I wasn't even sure he'd come. After all, it was just an engagement our families arranged. We'd never even met.

And for Carl's sake, I'd kept him waiting for three whole years.

The crowd forced me backward until I hit a solid chest.

A large hand closed firmly around my waist.

"Who dares touch my Luna?"

  • My Fated Mate Faked Our Wedding, So I Married the Alpha King   Chapter 11

After the wedding, I sat on the couch, still struggling to believe any of it was real.I thought Rhys would be furious with me, maybe even divorce me.After all, ours was only an arranged marriage. There were no feelings between us.I thought he'd keep his distance once the ceremony was over.Instead, he poured me a glass of warm water. He even personally silenced the Elders when they complained about me losing my healing power."Why?"Finally, I asked the question that had been nagging at me. "You're the Alpha King. Why would you go along with what the elders arranged and mark a useless wolf like me who can't even shift?"Rhys laughed softly. He walked over to me and took a dried herb out of his pocket.I stared at it in confusion. "What is this?"Rhys looked into my eyes and said in a low, rough voice, "This engagement wasn't something the elders came up with on a whim. I asked for it."I searched my memory until the answer finally surfaced. When I was eighteen, shortly before a pack

Carl was sent flying. He hit the floor and rolled over a dozen times before coming to a stop. Then he began crawling toward me on his hands and knees."Vera... forgive me... please take back your rejection..."I looked down at him without emotion."Carl, what exactly do I owe you? Why won't you let me go?"Carl crawled to my feet, sobbing."You don't owe me anything... I'm the one to blame! I never even liked Aurora! I only got together with her to make you jealous, to make you beg me!"Gasps went up all over the hall.Carl broke down, sobbing. "You had that precious healing power, while I was almost crippled! I was jealous. I felt worthless! I was terrified another family would take you and your healing power!"So all I could do was make one bet after another and humiliate you over and over. I wanted to prove to everyone that no matter how badly I treated you, you'd never leave me!"Tears streamed down Carl's face as he waited for me to answer. But I just looked him in the eye and sai

The elevator doors slid slowly open on the top floor.I stepped out.Two rows of fully armed royal guards dropped to one knee and called out, "Alpha King! Luna Queen!"I didn't look at Carl, but I could pretty much guess the look on his face. The ballroom doors swung open. The hall was filled with the highest-ranking werewolf Elders from across the Americas, including several I'd saved with my healing power as a child. My parents came over to greet us, beaming. "Vera, my precious girl, may the Moon Goddess bless you both!"Behind me, Carl saw my parents and blurted out, "Mr. and Mrs. Hale, what are you doing here?"The second my mom saw Carl, her smile vanished. She had seen everything Carl put me through over the years, and she had no warmth left for him."Carl, are you here for Vera's wedding too?"You've been Vera's friend for so many years, and you couldn't even dress up for her wedding? You're embarrassing her."Carl froze. He looked around and realized the room was filled with pa

I followed Rhys to the ballroom.Carl and his crowd had gotten there first. They stood a little way off, watching me with obvious amusement.Aurora sighed and shook her head at me. "Vera, lying never ends well. Why do this to yourself?"Everyone was waiting to watch me make a fool of myself.I shrank back on instinct, afraid of whatever was about to happen.Rhys stopped walking. He turned around, his voice low and gentle. "Don't be afraid. The wedding I promised you is real. All of it."Should I believe him?Carl had once promised to give me the grandest coming-of-age ceremony the pack had ever seen on the day of my first shift. But when the day came, he gave the ring to Aurora right in front of everyone.I was already a useless wolf who could barely shift.Even so, I had endured every second of agony and forced myself to shift because of his promise.I thought it was my coming-of-age ceremony, proof that all the suffering had finally paid off.Instead, it turned into Carl's grand decl

I left the fountain and went back to Rhys.He looked at me, then suddenly leaned in and touched the back of my neck."I'm sorry. I used too much strength just now. I scared you."He sounded annoyed with himself."I didn't want to rush it. I wanted to give you more time to get used to this marriage. But I was afraid that if I waited even one second longer, someone would take you away again."My face went hot. It sounded as though we'd known each other before. But we'd never even met.I couldn't bring myself to look at him. I looked down and said quietly, "It's not your fault. I was just caught off guard."Rhys laughed softly and held out his hand to me.I knew Carl and his crowd were still outside, waiting to watch me make a fool of myself. So I put my hand firmly in Rhys's palm.Rhys drew me in until I was pressed against his chest."Now that the mark is done, every part of you, body and soul, belongs only to me."A shiver ran through me. My legs went weak, and I leaned into his arms o

Rhys carried me to the altar. He set me down, and together we underwent the Moon Goddess's blessing ritual. It had all happened so fast. I still felt dazed.I said softly, "Thank you."Rhys lowered his head a little, and his gaze fell on the side of my neck. The high priest stepped aside respectfully. "Please release your spiritual energies and let them resonate."Rhys leaned in and marked my neck, claiming me as his mate."You don't have to feel like you owe me."Rhys immediately sensed my tension and gently brushed a thumb across the corner of my eye. "This is what I'm supposed to do."I made an excuse to go wash up at the fountain. I needed somewhere to calm down. When I got there, I overheard Carl and his group talking. His Beta's voice was shaking. "Alpha, that's the Alpha King. We'd better not mess with him."Carl scoffed. "That engagement fell through ages ago! That guy's obviously some fraud Vera hired to put on a show! She'll do anything to make me jealous!"The others quickly
