Chapter 1

My surgery was four hours away, and my father was still nowhere to be seen.

The day before, when the doctor advised me to have a family member present, Dad had promised he would come.

I told him I was having a minor procedure. For once, his usual coldness disappeared. He even sounded anxious. “What's wrong? Why do you need surgery?”

I didn't dare tell him it was a heart stent procedure.

I had inherited my mother's congenital cardiovascular defect.

The day she gave birth to me, the condition triggered acute heart failure and killed her.

Every birthday since, the suffocating silence in our house and the red rims around Dad's eyes had filled me with dread.

“It's only a minor procedure. I just need you to stay with me. I'll be fine.”

But he didn't show up.

Dr. Harris, our family physician, looked at me with sympathy. “Miss Stella, perhaps Mr. Lowell is in a meeting and hasn't heard his phone. Why don't you try him again?”

He had already declined my calls seventeen times.

I tightened my grip on my phone, summoned what courage I had left, and dialed again.

Thank God. This time, the call actually connected.

A steady “Hello?” came through with wind rushing in the background.

Hope surged through me. “Dad, you're almost here, right?”

His voice was ice-cold. “If you want me to come, the least you can do is tell me the truth.”

I thought he was angry because I had hidden my condition, so I said quietly, “It's a vascular defect... in my heart.”

The next second, Autumn's voice came through the phone.

“See, Dad? I told you Stella would claim she had heart disease. She knows that's the easiest way to make you think of Mom.”

Dad let out a cold laugh.

“So you did have an ulterior motive. Your heart was fine for all these years, and now, at eighteen, you suddenly have a condition?”

Pain clenched violently through my chest.

My knuckles whitened around the phone. “But you promised you would come. No matter what, you should keep your word...”

“Enough!” Dad barked. “Today is the eighteenth anniversary of your mother's death, and you had to choose this day to make everyone miserable. Stella, you truly disappoint me!”

Autumn's bright laughter rang through the phone.

“Dad, look! The first snow of the year is so beautiful. If Mom can see it from heaven, she must be so happy.”

His voice softened at once. “She would be even happier if the three of us could be together again. Careful, sweetheart. Don't catch a cold.”

My heart went cold.

I stopped trying to explain and ended the call.

Dr. Harris tried to comfort me. “Mr. Lowell does have a company to run. It's understandable that he's busy. But your surgery is important, so I contacted your grandmother. She has agreed to come.”

I forced the sob back down my throat. I didn't want Grandma to worry.

It took her only an hour to arrive. She entered my room leaning on her rosewood cane and left her bodyguards outside.

The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“Oh, my poor child... Where is Victor? He's your father! Where the hell is he at a time like this?” she demanded.

I lowered my eyes.

“He took Autumn to pay their respects to Mom.”

Grandma wasn't moved by his devotion in the slightest. She trembled with fury.

“He still has the nerve to go? I never should have let Celeste marry him! He knew she was in poor health, yet he still let her get pregnant and give birth. Now he's left you here alone. Is this how he treats a descendant of the Sheridan family?”

“Sweetheart, when this surgery is over, come home with me.”

Hope filled her eyes as she waited for my answer.

What had I been holding on to all these years?

The time I was five, when Dad took us on a road trip and drove nearly two hundred miles before remembering he had left me at a rest stop?

Or when I was ten and lay writhing with acute appendicitis while he filled the sky with fireworks for Autumn simply because she said she was in a bad mood?

If not for Grandma, I would have died long ago in one of the countless places where he had forgotten me.

My father's heart would never soften toward me.

Grandma sighed. “Stella, you look too much like your mother. Victor is a coward. Every time he sees you, he remembers how Celeste died, and he can't face it. And as for Autumn, she's even... Never mind.”

Years of hurt broke loose all at once.

I lifted my head, more certain than I had ever been. “Grandma, I'll come home with you.”

She nodded in relief. “I told you before—as long as you come home, you will inherit everything the Sheridan family owns, including everything your mother once invested in Victor's businesses.”

Before now, I had never been able to accept her condition that I cut all ties with Dad.

This time, I had no reason to hesitate.

After the Sheridan family withdrew its funding, Lowell Group lasted only nineteen days.First, its European partners terminated their contracts. Then the banks called in their loans, and suppliers gathered outside headquarters demanding payment.Victor mortgaged the mansion, his collections, and every remaining share he owned, but he still couldn't close the funding gap.The board removed him.The court froze his accounts soon afterward and seized the company and his home. The once all-powerful chairman became a man who had to borrow money from a former assistant just to cover a hotel deposit. Not one of his former subordinates would take his calls. At last, he lost the company, wealth, and dignity he had valued above everything else. And he lost his only biological daughter.Autumn's case went to trial soon afterward. Before the hearing, the police reopened Mom's medical records, her final clotting tests, and the testimony of the medical staff who had treated her before and after the

Three days after Autumn's arrest, Victor came to the Sheridan estate for a second time. This time, he didn't shout or cry outside the gates. Nor did he claim that Autumn had deceived him.He brought a complete inventory of every asset Celeste had left behind.I had my attorney escort him into the sitting room.In only a few days, he seemed to have aged ten years.“Stella, Autumn confessed.” His voice was hoarse. “Your mother didn't die because she gave birth to you. Her clotting medication was replaced.”My fingers locked around the arms of my wheelchair. For eighteen years, Victor had told me again and again that I had killed Mom.Even I had once believed that my birth was a sin.Now he was telling me that the person responsible was Autumn, the daughter he had treasured above everything.Victor lowered his head and admitted why he had brought Autumn home and why he had lied to Celeste.“I loved Celeste. That was never a lie. And I didn't marry her for the Sheridan fortune.”“Perhaps y

When Victor returned to the mansion, Autumn was packing her jewelry and passport. She had evidently heard that the Sheridans had cut off funding for the European division. She planned to leave before Victor turned against her completely.Victor threw the paternity report at her feet.“Explain.”One glance at the document drained the color from Autumn's face.“Stella must have forged this. Dad, we have the same blood type. Haven't you always said I look just like you did as a child?”Her words shattered the last fragment of hope he had left.Twenty years ago, when Victor was young, he had loved another woman. After their breakup, she became addicted to drugs and vanished from his life. Not long after he married Celeste, the woman suddenly called him. She claimed she had given birth to his daughter but couldn't afford to raise her and had been forced to leave the child at an orphanage.By the time Victor arrived at the orphanage, the woman was gone.Autumn had the same blood type as he d

Victor opened the first video. The footage showed Stella's hospital room.He watched as Autumn viciously mocked her, then deliberately smashed the glass. What came next made his eyes burn with rage. Autumn had ripped the central line from Stella's arm with her own hands. Then she picked up a shard of glass, cut her own wrist without hesitation, and began to scream.Every frame was a slap across Victor's face. The room spun around him, and he collapsed into a chair. The daughter he had cherished for more than a decade was capable of such cruelty.Worse, he had believed every word of her lies. He had watched his own biological daughter struggle in a pool of blood and refused to let her receive the blood that could save her. With shaking hands, he opened the second attachment. It was a notarized agreement severing their family ties. His own signature was at the bottom. He remembered the supposed liability waiver Stella had handed him in the hospital. He had signed it without reading a wor

The cut on Autumn's arm needed only two stitches.Victor sat on the bench outside the emergency room and listened to her whimper dramatically about the pain. For some reason, the sound grated on his nerves. He looked down at the blood on the cuff of his suit.It was Stella's. It had sprayed from her body in the hospital room.Victor closed his eyes, and all he could see was Stella lying in a pool of blood, staring at him.Her eyes had looked exactly like Celeste's before she died. The same despair. The same coldness. The same emptiness of someone who had given up completely. He shot to his feet, hurried to the elevator, and pressed the button for the inpatient floor. His heart raced as a terror unlike anything he had ever felt closed around it.He had only been angry because he thought Stella was scheming again, because he thought she had attacked Autumn like a madwoman. But she had lost so much blood. Could she really survive? The elevator doors opened, and Victor all but ran into her

The next day, Dr. Harris frowned as he reviewed my numbers during morning rounds.“Stella, your hemoglobin has fallen below sixty grams per liter. Lowell Hospital doesn't have enough compatible blood in reserve. I need to call your relatives in for a direct donation.”I forced myself to stay alert. “Grandma will be back tomorrow. I can wait.”Dr. Harris shook his head. “You can't. I've already called Mr. Lowell and asked him to come.”Dad came, but not alone. He brought Autumn with him.The moment he arrived, the doctor took him to an examination room to have his blood drawn. That left Autumn and me alone in the ward.As soon as Dad was gone, the sweetness vanished from her face. Her eyes filled with vicious jealousy.“Stella, you really are hard to kill. Even this wasn't enough.”“Sorry to disappoint you,” I said coldly.“Don't get smug.” Autumn leaned closer and lowered her voice. “You think Dad actually cares about you? He's only afraid that if you die in his hospital, it will damag
