Chapter 3

Author: Late Love
I opened the synced bank records and started going through every single transaction.

Test prep course for grad school: 80,000 dollars.

Graduate school tuition and dorm fees: 120,000 dollars.

Four years of rent on that upscale apartment in Sandling: 160,000 dollars.

Four years' worth of bags, cosmetics, and living expenses: 240,000 dollars.

The down payment I'd set aside for Nancy's and my wedding apartment: 300,000 dollars.

And last month, I just transferred her the money for our wedding: 300,000 dollars.

The grand total was 1.2 million dollars.

Eight years. That was how long I'd been grinding my bones and bleeding myself dry just to give Nancy the "security" she wanted.

I traced the 300,000 dollars I had transferred to her for our wedding to find out where the money had gone.

Dad had given it to me before he was diagnosed with cancer. I had refused to take it at first, but he insisted, wanting to make sure that our wedding would go ahead without a hitch.

The bank records didn't lie. That money never went into any savings account, despite everything she'd told me.

The day after she received the money, she transferred it into a corporate account registered under the name "Doyle Tech", claiming it was for "working capital for a personal investment project".

I stared at the endless transaction records and transfer receipts on the screen, then suddenly burst into laughter.

The more I laughed, the harder it became to hold back my tears, until they finally fell onto the keyboard.

She wasn't just using my money to support herself.

She and her whole family had been scheming against me, using my money to support her first love!

I captured screenshots and downloaded everything I could find, including her chat logs, bank transfers, hotel bookings in Manta Coast, and records of her stays in other cities.

I then connected my device to the shared printer in the lounge next door.

It hummed to life and began spitting out page after page of evidence.

I stood there watching the black-and-white sheets stack up.

Without warning, it hit me that Dad might have been lucky not to have lived long enough to see her.

Just as the printer spat out the final page, a new email suddenly popped up in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

It was from that mysterious anonymous account again.

This time, it didn't come with any text. There was only a video attachment titled "Graduation".

The video was shot in June four years ago, showing the backstage area of Nancy's graduation hall.

Nancy wore her gown and cap, while Sean stood beside her in a well-tailored suit.

They were locked in an embrace in a deserted hallway corner, kissing each other deeply as if no one else existed.

The video was filmed secretly, but it showed Nancy wrapping her arms around Sean's neck, her gaze filled with adoration and worship.

My eyes locked onto the timestamp flickering in the bottom-right corner of the video. All the blood in my body drained out in an instant, and my fingertips turned cold.

What was I doing four years ago on that day?

I soon remembered.

That day, Dad had just been diagnosed with a liver tumor and was in the hospital undergoing his first lesion removal surgery.

I was sitting by myself on that freezing plastic bench outside the operating room.

My eyes were fixed on the glowing red sign that read, "Surgery In Progress". I couldn't help trembling, feeling like the world was going to collapse on me.

Desperate and terrified, I typed out a message to Nancy. "Nancy, the surgery has just started. I'm a little scared. Can we talk?"

What had been her reply?

"Hugo, graduation is really hectic. My advisor and all the deans keep pulling me around to socialize. I'll call you later. Your dad will make it through. Don't worry."

Turns out, her "hectic" meant kissing another guy passionately backstage.

Her "socializing" meant giving herself completely to her first love, Sean.

For eight years, I wasn't just a constant source of money she could turn to whenever she needed it. I was also nothing more than a convenient distraction she used to fill the gaps whenever Sean wasn't around.

With a blank expression, I closed the video file and placed all the printed evidence into a brown paper envelope.

I stood and placed a hand on Dad's framed portrait. For a long moment, I just looked at his kind face, letting the silence settle around me.

I decided to visit Dad's grave two days later.

I pulled out my phone to text Nancy.

"I'm going to the cemetery two days from now. Bring your parents to the Snow residence. We'll settle the wedding money and the apartment downtown once and for all."

Less than ten seconds after my text was sent, Nancy's reply arrived.

I said, "Dad's final words before he breathed his last were, 'Tell her I waited for her.'"I took a step forward, staring straight into Nancy's eyes which were filled with fear and despair. "Nancy, what do you think the 1.2 million dollars was about? Do you think you were just paying back money for the handbags and rent?""N-No…""The 1.2 million dollars isn't just money. You owed Dad his life, as you made him breathe his last!" My voice stayed low, but every single word cut like a blade. "Nancy, you can settle a debt on paper. But you can't pay back a life. You can't pay back what you stole from him when he was lying there, waiting for you."I pointed at the tombstone. "You never owed me anything. You owed him."Nancy clutched at her chest tightly, as if she finally realized something.A scream of utter despair tore out of her throat. She went limp in the muddy ground and began violently banging her head on the ground, sobbing until her voice broke."I'm sorry, Mr. Snow. I real

"Mr. Snow, I'm sorry. I really am…" Nancy sobbed, striking the stone platform in front of the grave with her open palm, her voice raw and broken. "It was my fault. I was too greedy and ruined Hugo. I paid it all back, I swear. I know I was wrong. Please ask Hugo to speak to me. Just one word, that's all I'm asking for…"I stopped three steps away and watched her grovel at Dad's grave, my expression cold.I felt nothing but stillness. There was no anger or pity—not even the faintest trace of disgust. When someone has truly moved on, the person who once broke them becomes nothing more than a shell with a voice—nothing else. The sharp crack of my shoe breaking a dry branch echoed through the still air.Nancy's sobs came to an abrupt stop, and her body went stiff. In disbelief, she slowly turned her head around. The moment she saw me, her eyes widened sharply, and the tears she had been holding back spilled out all at once.In a panic, she tried to scramble to her feet, but her legs

The following month, my strong drafting skills and exceptionally meticulous construction details began to set me apart.Word of mouth spread quickly among homeowner groups. My studio suddenly landed ten projects in one go.In the third month, I hired an assistant, a fresh graduate from college.Every morning, I woke to my alarm and looked at the piles of design drawings covering my desk. For the first time in a long time, I felt a sense of fulfillment and freedom. I no longer had to cater to anyone's vanity, nor scrimp just to buy luxury bags for someone else. Late at night, after another round of overtime in the quiet city, I stood beneath the dazzling neon lights of Coldvent. The wind that hit my face felt like the freest thing I'd ever known. Two months later, on the first day of the month, two notifications suddenly popped up on my mobile banking app.One was a fund transfer alert that read, "Incoming transfer: 5,000.00 dollars. Remarks: First installment repayment."Imme

I leaned back in the chair of the budget hotel, slowly rubbing the Acknowledgment of Debt between my hands, my voice calm."Oh? Is that so?" I asked over the phone."Wait, that's not even half of it! Nancy didn't only help Sean by pouring her savings into his company; she also used her position to give his shell company preferential treatment. "Now, her company's headquarters has launched a full internal audit. Since she was the one directly responsible for handling everything, she was suspended on the spot and ordered to cooperate with the investigation. Word is, when the finance and legal teams walked her out of the office that day, she looked green. All her colleagues who used to be close to her didn't even dare to meet her gaze."After the call ended, I stared at the phone screen, feeling calm. After all, what went around would come back around.Nancy had always seen Sean as her ticket to step up the social ladder, but she never understood that nothing in this life was free.

In the audio recording, Sean's impatient and icy voice followed. "Nancy, are you nuts? Give you back the money? You willingly transferred the 300,000 dollars to my company's account as an angel investor. You signed the IOU yourself. That has nothing to do with me."Nancy's voice shook in disbelief. "What? Didn't you beg me to help you with cash flow? You said that once the project secured funding, we would get married!""That was then!" Sean dropped his facade, his affection all gone. "The investors have withdrawn their funding. My whole startup is collapsing. I'm on the verge of bankruptcy and liquidation. I can't even save myself. Do you think I have any money for you?" "Sean, you bastard! That wasn't what you promised me!"The audio picked up the muffled sounds of Nancy struggling and her bag hitting the car."Things were different back then! Don't push it, Nancy. I never forced you to steal your father-in-law's savings!" Sean shoved her away viciously. "Hugo's a great guy.

Nancy begged, "Please, give me another chance. I'll get the money back, and we can get married! We can register our marriage tomorrow!"I halted in my steps and pried her fingers off my sleeve slowly."Nancy, my dad has just passed, but you didn't even bother looking at his memorial portrait or show any signs of sorrow." Looking at her stunned gaze, I delivered the final blow. "You don't owe me. You owe him."Half an hour later, I arrived at the cemetery on the outskirts of the city.It had been seven days since Dad had passed. It had started to drizzle.I knelt before his freshly built grave and flicked a lighter, setting a copy of the 1.2 million-dollar Acknowledgment of Debt ablaze. The flames curled the paper as it burned, reducing it to ashes that drifted into the air."Dad, I've gotten justice for you."My eyes had turned red as I spoke. "She owed you this. And I got every penny of it back."The flames flickered as they slowly died out.The phone in my pocket vibrated
