Chapter 2

Author: Late Love
For eight years, I had given Nancy every ounce of my patience.

I was done waiting.

When Dad's body was wheeled into the morgue, I didn't cry.

I'd already drained every drop of tears I had, right there in the hospital hallway, over five sleepless nights.

The memorial candle flickered, casting an unsteady glow over Dad's memorial portrait.

In his final moments, he had gripped my hand tightly and asked, "When is Nancy coming?"

That question stayed with me like a blunt, rusted knife, sawing back and forth through my chest.

The corridor was dead quiet, like a tomb. My phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from an unknown number.

I numbly swiped the screen open and tapped the image.

The moment my eyes landed on it, the blood in my veins turned to ice.

The photo was sharp and painfully clear.

In it, Nancy was holding Sean's arm, a faint blush coloring her cheeks, her gaze soft with a love she made no effort to hide.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the night sky over the river blazed with fireworks, set off in celebration of his birthday.

Beneath the photo, two lines of icy text followed.

"Check the cloud backup account you two used to share. The password is the birthday of her first love, Sean Doyle. You'll find everything you want to know there."

I had no idea who sent it, but my gaze was fixed on Nancy's smile in the photo.

Having just gone through the raw agony of loss and farewell, I had somehow settled into a strange sense of calmness.

Instead of replying to the message, I turned, walked toward the family waiting area outside the morgue, and pulled my laptop out of my bag.

Nancy and I had been together for eight years. She knew every single one of my passwords, and her cloud drive used to be linked to my laptop.

I typed in Sean's birthday.

The password worked, and I was in.

The cloud system had automatically synced everything—her entire chat history, her hidden photo albums, and every purchase record she'd ever made.

My fingers found the search bar. I took a deep breath before typing Sean's name.

The very first search result was her chat history with Lily, her college friend.

They had this conversation roughly two weeks ago.

Lily asked, "So what's the deal with you and Sean? You two went pretty wild in Manta Coast previously. How are you going to handle things with Hugo?"

Nancy replied, "Hugo's a nice guy, but he's way too boring. It's pretty embarrassing to be seen with him. Sean promised to make it official once his project secured Series A funding. I'm just stringing Hugo along now."

My hand froze for a moment. Each breath I took felt like a needle in my chest.

Scrolling down, I found a private group chat Nancy had with her coworkers.

Her colleague had asked, "Nancy, is that devoted backup boyfriend of yours from your hometown still waiting to marry you? When are you going to tell him the truth?"

Nancy replied with an exasperated sticker.

"Soon. I'll make my move once he's paid the down payment on that place downtown and added my name to the deed. I'm not in a rush, but he is."

So all along, her friends and coworkers had known. To them, I was nothing more than the backup boyfriend she could discard whenever she wanted.

The only one in the dark was me, the clown who never saw it coming.

But what truly sent a chill through me was the chat history between her and her own mother, Martha Hopkins.

Martha told her, "Nancy, Sean might have a bright future, but his startup has too much risk. Listen to me. String Hugo along first. He's honest, dependable, and most importantly, he listens to you. That's your best safety net. You can make up your mind when your name is on the deed. A woman always needs a backup plan, right?"

Nancy replied, "I know, Mom. Don't worry. He's foolish enough to believe anything I say. I even got him to tell me his debit card's PIN yesterday."

Backup plan?

Foolish?

I gritted my teeth, my eyes burning and swollen. My fingers were trembling slightly over the keyboard.

I said, "Dad's final words before he breathed his last were, 'Tell her I waited for her.'"I took a step forward, staring straight into Nancy's eyes which were filled with fear and despair. "Nancy, what do you think the 1.2 million dollars was about? Do you think you were just paying back money for the handbags and rent?""N-No…""The 1.2 million dollars isn't just money. You owed Dad his life, as you made him breathe his last!" My voice stayed low, but every single word cut like a blade. "Nancy, you can settle a debt on paper. But you can't pay back a life. You can't pay back what you stole from him when he was lying there, waiting for you."I pointed at the tombstone. "You never owed me anything. You owed him."Nancy clutched at her chest tightly, as if she finally realized something.A scream of utter despair tore out of her throat. She went limp in the muddy ground and began violently banging her head on the ground, sobbing until her voice broke."I'm sorry, Mr. Snow. I real

"Mr. Snow, I'm sorry. I really am…" Nancy sobbed, striking the stone platform in front of the grave with her open palm, her voice raw and broken. "It was my fault. I was too greedy and ruined Hugo. I paid it all back, I swear. I know I was wrong. Please ask Hugo to speak to me. Just one word, that's all I'm asking for…"I stopped three steps away and watched her grovel at Dad's grave, my expression cold.I felt nothing but stillness. There was no anger or pity—not even the faintest trace of disgust. When someone has truly moved on, the person who once broke them becomes nothing more than a shell with a voice—nothing else. The sharp crack of my shoe breaking a dry branch echoed through the still air.Nancy's sobs came to an abrupt stop, and her body went stiff. In disbelief, she slowly turned her head around. The moment she saw me, her eyes widened sharply, and the tears she had been holding back spilled out all at once.In a panic, she tried to scramble to her feet, but her legs

The following month, my strong drafting skills and exceptionally meticulous construction details began to set me apart.Word of mouth spread quickly among homeowner groups. My studio suddenly landed ten projects in one go.In the third month, I hired an assistant, a fresh graduate from college.Every morning, I woke to my alarm and looked at the piles of design drawings covering my desk. For the first time in a long time, I felt a sense of fulfillment and freedom. I no longer had to cater to anyone's vanity, nor scrimp just to buy luxury bags for someone else. Late at night, after another round of overtime in the quiet city, I stood beneath the dazzling neon lights of Coldvent. The wind that hit my face felt like the freest thing I'd ever known. Two months later, on the first day of the month, two notifications suddenly popped up on my mobile banking app.One was a fund transfer alert that read, "Incoming transfer: 5,000.00 dollars. Remarks: First installment repayment."Imme

I leaned back in the chair of the budget hotel, slowly rubbing the Acknowledgment of Debt between my hands, my voice calm."Oh? Is that so?" I asked over the phone."Wait, that's not even half of it! Nancy didn't only help Sean by pouring her savings into his company; she also used her position to give his shell company preferential treatment. "Now, her company's headquarters has launched a full internal audit. Since she was the one directly responsible for handling everything, she was suspended on the spot and ordered to cooperate with the investigation. Word is, when the finance and legal teams walked her out of the office that day, she looked green. All her colleagues who used to be close to her didn't even dare to meet her gaze."After the call ended, I stared at the phone screen, feeling calm. After all, what went around would come back around.Nancy had always seen Sean as her ticket to step up the social ladder, but she never understood that nothing in this life was free.

In the audio recording, Sean's impatient and icy voice followed. "Nancy, are you nuts? Give you back the money? You willingly transferred the 300,000 dollars to my company's account as an angel investor. You signed the IOU yourself. That has nothing to do with me."Nancy's voice shook in disbelief. "What? Didn't you beg me to help you with cash flow? You said that once the project secured funding, we would get married!""That was then!" Sean dropped his facade, his affection all gone. "The investors have withdrawn their funding. My whole startup is collapsing. I'm on the verge of bankruptcy and liquidation. I can't even save myself. Do you think I have any money for you?" "Sean, you bastard! That wasn't what you promised me!"The audio picked up the muffled sounds of Nancy struggling and her bag hitting the car."Things were different back then! Don't push it, Nancy. I never forced you to steal your father-in-law's savings!" Sean shoved her away viciously. "Hugo's a great guy.

Nancy begged, "Please, give me another chance. I'll get the money back, and we can get married! We can register our marriage tomorrow!"I halted in my steps and pried her fingers off my sleeve slowly."Nancy, my dad has just passed, but you didn't even bother looking at his memorial portrait or show any signs of sorrow." Looking at her stunned gaze, I delivered the final blow. "You don't owe me. You owe him."Half an hour later, I arrived at the cemetery on the outskirts of the city.It had been seven days since Dad had passed. It had started to drizzle.I knelt before his freshly built grave and flicked a lighter, setting a copy of the 1.2 million-dollar Acknowledgment of Debt ablaze. The flames curled the paper as it burned, reducing it to ashes that drifted into the air."Dad, I've gotten justice for you."My eyes had turned red as I spoke. "She owed you this. And I got every penny of it back."The flames flickered as they slowly died out.The phone in my pocket vibrated
