Chapter 2

Author: Niu
The front of my car slammed into the unfinished concrete wall.

The airbag deployed and struck me in the face.

I groaned in pain as cold sweat broke out on my forehead.

Then a deep, tearing pain spread through my right forearm and wrist.

I flexed my fingers. I could still move them, but the muscles and soft tissue were badly bruised.

The glass doors to the ER flew open.

Dr. Owen Dace, the ER doctor on duty downstairs, ran out with a few nurses to see what had happened.

Their flashlights swept over the wreckage.

Then they saw me behind the wheel—the doctor who had just gone off duty.

They were stunned.

"Emma! How did this happen?!"

Dr. Dace rushed over and yanked the door open.

My coworkers scrambled to help me out of the driver's seat.

I leaned against the car door, gasping for air.

The translucent comments began racing across my vision again.

[Nice job! Our girl's a total badass!]

[That crash was perfect. Nothing serious, and now she's got the perfect excuse to stay out of the OR!]

[Your coworkers at the hospital all saw it. Those are rock-solid witnesses. Let's see them try to force you into surgery now!]

I read the comments and gave a thin, humorless smile.

Now Anna and my father couldn't force me to do the surgery. Could they?

My coworkers quickly helped me into the treatment room on the first floor.

Looking worried, Dr. Dace sat me down in an exam chair.

He carefully lifted my right hand to examine the injuries to my arm.

I sucked in a sharp breath.

My wrist was already swollen and mottled with ugly purple bruises. The slightest effort made my fingers tremble uncontrollably.

Frowning, Dr. Dace reached for the povidone-iodine and a thick elastic bandage.

He cleaned the scrapes on my arm with practiced hands, wrapped my wrist tightly, and secured my arm in a sling.

When he finished, Dr. Dace gave me a serious look.

"Emma, this is a severe soft tissue injury.

"Your wrist also shows clear signs of a severe sprain. As one doctor to another, I need you to take this seriously.

"You can't put any strain on your right wrist for a while, much less pick up a scalpel for delicate surgery. If you do, you'll suffer permanent damage."

I nodded. "I understand. Thank you, Dr. Dace," I said softly.

Dr. Dace said I was lucky not to have injured my cervical spine or broken any bones.

As he spoke, he pulled his phone out of his white coat pocket to make a call.

"This is serious. I need to call Dr. Hale right away and tell him what happened.

"You're one of our best people. A car accident is no small thing."

My gaze sharpened.

I immediately reached over and pressed my uninjured left hand firmly over his phone.

Dr. Dace froze and looked at me in confusion.

My face was calm, but my voice left no room for argument.

"Don't call him yet.

"He's dealing with a critical situation at the hospital tonight and already has his hands full.

"Don't bother him over something as minor as this. I don't want to distract him."

Dr. Dace hesitated.

"But with your hand this badly hurt, you need time off..."

"I'll tell him myself. Go take care of your other patients," I cut in.

Realizing I wouldn't budge, Dr. Dace put his phone away with a sigh and went to write up my medical report and get me some painkillers.

Even if I told Arthur, he wouldn't believe me.

He'd only think I was making up excuses to get out of the surgery.

Just then, the phone in my pocket started buzzing like crazy. Anna's name flashed on the screen.

I stared coldly at the flashing name and waited several seconds before answering.

The call had barely connected.

Anna was already shrieking in my ear.

"Emma! Where the hell are you?! Why aren't you back yet?!

"The patient's blood pressure keeps dropping. He's not going to hold on much longer!

"Get in here and take over! Or I'm reporting you to Dad, and you can kiss this month's bonus goodbye."

I felt a trace of bitter sadness as my sister accused me. She usually acted like an imperious genius no one could question.

Luckily, the floating comments had warned me what was coming.

I was ready for this.

I replied coldly.

"Got it.

"I'll be in the OR in a minute."

Before she could start screaming again, I hung up.

I took a deep breath, strode out of the treatment room, and headed for the OR.

The pain made Anna pass out, and the guards tossed her into a corner like trash. At the sight of Anna, my father's legs gave out. He dropped to his knees in front of Victor. He collapsed onto the bloodstained floor and frantically begged for mercy. As he begged, he struck his forehead against the tile over and over. Each blow landed with a thud until blood streamed down his face."Mr. Costa! Please spare me!"My foolish daughter did all of this on her own. I knew nothing about it!"I'm the director of this hospital. I can make this right! I'll give you every share I own in this place!"Victor's eyes turned cold. He kicked my father hard in the chest. My father flew backward, slammed into the wall, and coughed up blood."A hospital director who treats people's lives like a game is nothing but a menace. There's no reason to keep you around."Victor drew his gun, ready to kill the greedy old man right there. Then I spoke up, my voice perfectly calm."Mr. Costa, one bullet is too good for

Nolan quickly picked up the bloody scalpel. He used the UV light and fingerprint powder in his kit to lift the prints. The result was never in doubt."Mr. Costa, there's one complete, usable fingerprint on the handle."Nolan compared it with Anna's prints and mine, then announced the result for everyone to hear."The print belongs to Dr. Anna Hale."Faced with the evidence, Anna fell apart. She rolled across the floor as if she'd lost her mind, clawing wildly at her hair."No! I didn't mean to!"I'm a surgical genius! How could I have cut the wrong vessel?"Suddenly, she whipped around and glared at my father beside her.She pointed at him, her voice trembling."Mr. Costa, this is all Arthur's fault."He told me that if I saved the Don, I'd receive the highest honor the Rinaldi family could bestow."But I can't perform surgery at all. He talked me into this. He said Emma would perform the operation, and all I had to do was sign the operative report."My father's face drained of color,

At Victor's order, Dr. Nolan Mercer, the forensic consultant hired by the Rinaldi family, rushed into the OR with a portable testing kit.The tension in the room was suffocating.Nolan pulled on a pair of gloves, expertly drew dark purple blood from Don Rinaldi's vein into a tube, and placed a few drops on a test strip.Every eye was fixed on that tiny strip. In less than three minutes, two bright red lines appeared.Nolan rose and gave Victor his report, his expression grim."Mr. Costa, there's no doubt the Don was poisoned."The toxin level in his blood is extremely high. Nothing could have saved him."Based on the reaction, he was injected about an hour ago."Nolan's findings confirmed everything I'd said. The truth about Marco's father's death was finally clear.Victor shot Marco a cold look."Marco, what do you have to say for yourself?"Realizing it was over, Marco suddenly burst into hysterical laughter."So what if I did?!"That old bastard should've stepped down years ago! The words had barely left my mouth.Marco's expression darkened instantly. He took a sharp step forward and jammed the gun under my chin, forcing my head up."Shut your filthy mouth!"You worthless doctor! You killed my father, and now you have the nerve to spout this garbage!"I'm sending you straight to hell!"His eyes burned with murderous intent. His finger was already on the trigger. He couldn't wait to shut me up for good. When Anna heard that Marco's father had been poisoned, she immediately seized on my claim. Desperate to escape blame for severing the artery, she shouted."That's right! Your father was poisoned!"Mr. Rinaldi, Emma's right!"I knew something was wrong when I made the cut. His lips had already turned purple!"That means I didn't kill him. He was poisoned. He was practically dead already."Anna's words backed Marco into a corner.Marco shook with rage. He wanted nothing more than to turn around and shoot her for being so stupid. He was just about to pull the trig

Still panting, Dr. Dace pushed past the bodyguards in black. He thrust the medical report on official ER letterhead toward Marco."Take a good look!"Emma has a severe wrist sprain with a partial ligament tear and extensive muscle bruising."She can't even hold a cotton swab right now. How could she possibly perform surgery?!"Marco's expression darkened. He snatched the report and skimmed it.The OR was deathly quiet except for the monitor's shrill alarm.Anna trembled all over, pale as a ghost. She bit her lip hard and kept trying to talk her way out of it."Mr. Rinaldi! Don't listen to him!"Emma must have paid him to fake that report ahead of time!"Even if her right hand is hurt, she can still hold a scalpel with her left!"She grabbed my scalpel with her left hand just now and cut the Don's artery!"My father jumped in too.He jabbed a finger in Dr. Dace's face and started yelling."Dace! How dare you conspire with Emma to forge a medical report?"You're fired! Get out of my hosp

As Anna complained through her tears, Marco's face darkened. He strode over and looked me up and down, his gaze cold. His eyes fell on the thick bandages around my right arm and the sling supporting it.Marco frowned and turned to Anna."Dr. Hale, her hand is badly injured."Find another doctor to assist you."There's no point forcing someone who can't even hold a scalpel steady to assist in surgery."At that, Anna went into a full-blown panic. She rushed to explain, "No, Mr. Rinaldi, that won't work!"Emma and I have worked together for years. We're perfectly in sync."She has to assist me if we want this surgery to have the best chance of success!"Then her tone changed, and she shot me a sharp look."Emma has always been insanely jealous of my success as a doctor."She's obviously lying so she can back out at the last minute and make me look bad!"My father immediately backed her up."Mr. Rinaldi, Anna's right!"I watched Emma grow up. She's always been petty."That little injury on
