Chapter 1

"Emma, get your ass back to the OR right now!"

My father, Arthur Hale, the hospital director, barked into the phone, leaving no room for refusal.

I'd just finished a 12-hour surgery.

I sat in the driver's seat, so exhausted I could barely keep my eyes open.

My grip tightened instinctively on the steering wheel.

"Arthur, my shift is over. I've already completed my handoff.

"Anna's covering the ER now. She's the doctor on call tonight."

I tried to keep my voice steady.

He let out an impatient huff.

"Cut the crap! A VIP was just rushed in, and he's in critical condition.

"Anna can't handle it alone. Get back here and assist her!"

I took a deep breath. It felt as if a boulder were pressing down on my chest.

"I've done two surgeries back-to-back. My hands are shaking.

"Operating in this condition would be reckless."

His voice turned shrill, and he didn't bother hiding the threat.

"Don't you dare make excuses, Emma!

"I don't care. You have three minutes to get yourself into OR One.

"If you're not there, I'll use my authority as director to block your credentialing as an attending physician next year!"

My eyes burned with unshed tears.

I didn't want to go, but with my career in my father's hands, I had no choice but to swallow my bitterness.

"Fine. I'm on my way."

My voice trembled.

I hung up, started the car, and prepared to turn around and head back to the ER.

That was when several floating comments suddenly appeared before my eyes.

[Don't go back! It's a death trap!]

[The patient is the old Don. His son, Marco Rinaldi, arranged the hit so he could take over.]

[If you walk into that OR and save him, his psycho son will have you killed to keep you quiet.]

[If you don't, he'll shoot you on the spot and send you to the grave with the old man!]

[If you go, you're taking the fall for Anna!]

I slammed on the brakes and stared at the warnings flashing wildly in front of me.

I gripped the steering wheel and cried silently.

After all these years, when had life ever been fair to me?

It was all because Anna's mother, my stepmother Vanessa Hale, chaired the largest pharmaceutical company in the city.

My late mother, by contrast, had been an ordinary woman.

To keep my stepmother happy, my father passed the talentless Anna off as a surgical prodigy.

And me? I was the gifted one, but his threats had reduced me to Anna's stand-in.

For the past three years, I'd performed every surgery that lasted 12 hours or more. I did every one entirely on my own, though each was supposedly a joint effort with Anna.

Time after time, sweat soaked through my scrubs.

And my dear little sister?

She'd lounge in her office with a pour-over coffee, scrolling through Instagram.

She'd wait until I'd tied off the very last stitch.

Only then would she put on a fresh, clean set of scrubs and walk in.

Then she'd accept the gratitude of the patient's family and bask in praise online.

Take last winter, for example.

I'd worked two overnight shifts in a row, then handled an emergency case from a multi-car pileup.

My body finally gave out, and I passed out cold on the locker room floor.

When my father arrived, he didn't let me rest. He snatched the chart from my hand.

He made me sit there hooked up to a dextrose IV and spend the whole night revising Anna's paper for her promotion.

"Anna's up for an award. You can't even handle one little thing like this?"

I can still picture the cold look on his face.

Just last month, the hospital named its Rising Star in Surgery.

The review committee had unanimously chosen me.

But my father used his power as director to secretly replace my name with Anna's.

He even transferred my entire cash award into Anna's account and used it to buy her a limited-edition sports car.

My mother died when I was young.

Once, I had been naive enough to believe that obedience and hard work would be enough.

Surely, they would one day earn me even a shred of my father's approval.

Then one day, I happened to walk past the director's office.

I heard my father say to Anna, "Don't worry. You're my daughter. You deserve the best of everything and all the glory.

"Emma's your big sister. Being your stepping stone is the least she can do."

We were both his daughters, but he'd never spared a single thought for me.

Amid all that grief and rage, one detail struck me: during the call, my father had only told me to assist Anna.

For a moment, I let myself hope. If I were only the assistant, maybe the blame wouldn't fall on me?

But a second later, reality shattered that fantasy.

My father always favored Anna, and they were both vicious. Only one outcome made sense.

If the old Don died on that table, they would pin all the blame on me.

They would claim I had botched the operation and offer me up as the perfect scapegoat to appease the mafia.

My gaze settled on the reinforced concrete wall under construction outside the ER.

An idea took shape.

I fixed my eyes on the wall and floored the gas pedal.

The engine roared.

I drove straight into it, head-on.

A deafening crash split the night.

The airbag deployed, and dust and smoke filled the air.

The pain made Anna pass out, and the guards tossed her into a corner like trash. At the sight of Anna, my father's legs gave out. He dropped to his knees in front of Victor. He collapsed onto the bloodstained floor and frantically begged for mercy. As he begged, he struck his forehead against the tile over and over. Each blow landed with a thud until blood streamed down his face."Mr. Costa! Please spare me!"My foolish daughter did all of this on her own. I knew nothing about it!"I'm the director of this hospital. I can make this right! I'll give you every share I own in this place!"Victor's eyes turned cold. He kicked my father hard in the chest. My father flew backward, slammed into the wall, and coughed up blood."A hospital director who treats people's lives like a game is nothing but a menace. There's no reason to keep you around."Victor drew his gun, ready to kill the greedy old man right there. Then I spoke up, my voice perfectly calm."Mr. Costa, one bullet is too good for

Nolan quickly picked up the bloody scalpel. He used the UV light and fingerprint powder in his kit to lift the prints. The result was never in doubt."Mr. Costa, there's one complete, usable fingerprint on the handle."Nolan compared it with Anna's prints and mine, then announced the result for everyone to hear."The print belongs to Dr. Anna Hale."Faced with the evidence, Anna fell apart. She rolled across the floor as if she'd lost her mind, clawing wildly at her hair."No! I didn't mean to!"I'm a surgical genius! How could I have cut the wrong vessel?"Suddenly, she whipped around and glared at my father beside her.She pointed at him, her voice trembling."Mr. Costa, this is all Arthur's fault."He told me that if I saved the Don, I'd receive the highest honor the Rinaldi family could bestow."But I can't perform surgery at all. He talked me into this. He said Emma would perform the operation, and all I had to do was sign the operative report."My father's face drained of color,

At Victor's order, Dr. Nolan Mercer, the forensic consultant hired by the Rinaldi family, rushed into the OR with a portable testing kit.The tension in the room was suffocating.Nolan pulled on a pair of gloves, expertly drew dark purple blood from Don Rinaldi's vein into a tube, and placed a few drops on a test strip.Every eye was fixed on that tiny strip. In less than three minutes, two bright red lines appeared.Nolan rose and gave Victor his report, his expression grim."Mr. Costa, there's no doubt the Don was poisoned."The toxin level in his blood is extremely high. Nothing could have saved him."Based on the reaction, he was injected about an hour ago."Nolan's findings confirmed everything I'd said. The truth about Marco's father's death was finally clear.Victor shot Marco a cold look."Marco, what do you have to say for yourself?"Realizing it was over, Marco suddenly burst into hysterical laughter."So what if I did?!"That old bastard should've stepped down years ago! The words had barely left my mouth.Marco's expression darkened instantly. He took a sharp step forward and jammed the gun under my chin, forcing my head up."Shut your filthy mouth!"You worthless doctor! You killed my father, and now you have the nerve to spout this garbage!"I'm sending you straight to hell!"His eyes burned with murderous intent. His finger was already on the trigger. He couldn't wait to shut me up for good. When Anna heard that Marco's father had been poisoned, she immediately seized on my claim. Desperate to escape blame for severing the artery, she shouted."That's right! Your father was poisoned!"Mr. Rinaldi, Emma's right!"I knew something was wrong when I made the cut. His lips had already turned purple!"That means I didn't kill him. He was poisoned. He was practically dead already."Anna's words backed Marco into a corner.Marco shook with rage. He wanted nothing more than to turn around and shoot her for being so stupid. He was just about to pull the trig

Still panting, Dr. Dace pushed past the bodyguards in black. He thrust the medical report on official ER letterhead toward Marco."Take a good look!"Emma has a severe wrist sprain with a partial ligament tear and extensive muscle bruising."She can't even hold a cotton swab right now. How could she possibly perform surgery?!"Marco's expression darkened. He snatched the report and skimmed it.The OR was deathly quiet except for the monitor's shrill alarm.Anna trembled all over, pale as a ghost. She bit her lip hard and kept trying to talk her way out of it."Mr. Rinaldi! Don't listen to him!"Emma must have paid him to fake that report ahead of time!"Even if her right hand is hurt, she can still hold a scalpel with her left!"She grabbed my scalpel with her left hand just now and cut the Don's artery!"My father jumped in too.He jabbed a finger in Dr. Dace's face and started yelling."Dace! How dare you conspire with Emma to forge a medical report?"You're fired! Get out of my hosp

As Anna complained through her tears, Marco's face darkened. He strode over and looked me up and down, his gaze cold. His eyes fell on the thick bandages around my right arm and the sling supporting it.Marco frowned and turned to Anna."Dr. Hale, her hand is badly injured."Find another doctor to assist you."There's no point forcing someone who can't even hold a scalpel steady to assist in surgery."At that, Anna went into a full-blown panic. She rushed to explain, "No, Mr. Rinaldi, that won't work!"Emma and I have worked together for years. We're perfectly in sync."She has to assist me if we want this surgery to have the best chance of success!"Then her tone changed, and she shot me a sharp look."Emma has always been insanely jealous of my success as a doctor."She's obviously lying so she can back out at the last minute and make me look bad!"My father immediately backed her up."Mr. Rinaldi, Anna's right!"I watched Emma grow up. She's always been petty."That little injury on
