Chapter 4

Autor: Chelsea
Dr. Conti was frantic by now, but he didn't dare defy my father.

"The hospital blood bank."

"Who's in charge of it?"

"Don, she doesn't have time for—"

"I asked who's in charge!"

Dr. Conti clenched his jaw.

"The supervisor on duty."

My father looked at my brother.

"Remember, the enemy has already breached our security once tonight.

"At a time like this, anything that comes near a member of this family gets checked first."

My brother stood there, slumped and looking like an empty shell.

"Dad, you're still trying to teach me a lesson? Even now?"

That only made my father angry.

"I'm trying to keep her safe!"

"What she needs right now is blood, Dad!"

"The estate keeps its own supply."

My father turned to one of his men.

"Go back and get it."

Dr. Conti stepped in front of him at once.

"That's a 40-minute round trip at least. She can't hold on that long."

My father frowned and waved him off impatiently.

"Tell them to drive faster. My daughter isn't that fragile."

"She might not even last ten minutes!"

My mother, Isabella Moretti, rushed into the clinic, having only just heard the news. Distraught, she grabbed my father by the front of his suit jacket.

"Vittorio, look at me. She's our daughter.

"She's suffered for Matteo all these years. Don't put her through any more!"

My father coldly pulled her hands away.

"It's because she's my daughter that I have to teach the future Don of the Moretti family how to protect her.

"And she needs to understand that for a Moretti princess, getting hurt comes with the territory. The sooner she gets used to it, the better."

Dr. Conti had gone white with panic.

"Every bag of blood is numbered and tested. We have a complete record for each one!

"The men who died on the south road tonight had our own radios on them too. Please, you don't have to worry."

But my father wouldn't hear it.

"I'm not taking that risk."

My eyes stayed closed. I was drifting further and further away.

Suddenly my brother stepped in front of my father.

"Use the hospital's blood."

"Move."

"I said use it!"

My father turned to face him, his expression hard.

"Are you giving me an order?"

My brother slowly clenched his fists.

"If I'm the heir you picked, then let me make one decision."

The hallway went quiet. My father stared at him, clearly displeased. A long moment passed before he gave in.

"Fine."

My brother was just about to breathe a sigh of relief.

Then my father went right back to lecturing.

"But remember this.

"If someone really has tampered with this blood, Elena's the one who dies."

My brother took one look at my father's calm, certain expression and went pale.

Matteo turned to look at me.

In that moment, I knew he'd lost his nerve. My father's arrogance had rattled him.

My father saw him hesitate, and his expression softened.

"That's what I'm trying to teach you.

"Someone else pays for every decision a Don makes."

My brother lowered his head and didn't say another word.

My father turned and gave his final order. "We wait for our own blood."

Suddenly the monitor started shrieking. Dr. Conti rushed back to my side.

"Her blood pressure's still dropping!"

My mother grabbed my hand.

"Elena, look at Mom. Stay awake."

I wanted to hold on to her, but my fingers had no strength left.

I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn't.

At last, hurried footsteps sounded outside.

"Don! The blood's here!"

My father took the cooler.

"You checked where it came from?"

"We checked."

"Good."

He turned to my brother.

"Remember today. It's always better to be safe than sorry—"

A long, flat tone sounded from the operating room and cut his lecture short.

Dr. Conti began trying to revive me.

My mother was sobbing my name as a nurse pulled her away.

My brother froze where he stood.

But suddenly, I couldn't feel the pain anymore.

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating above the operating room.

Finally, Dr. Conti pulled off his gloves.

"Record the time of death."

My father stood outside the door, the picture of confidence, still lecturing.

"Matteo.

"If you'd faced those kidnappers on your own today, your sister wouldn't have been so lucky.

"You've still got a lot to learn from me."

He was still talking as he pushed open the operating room door, as calm and sure of himself as ever.

Old and hunched over, my father sat slumped on the ground. He didn't get up for a long time."Elena, I haven't had one good day in all these years."I lost your mom. And Matteo doesn't want to be close to me."I didn't say anything, so he hurried on, "I'm not asking you to feel sorry for me. I just want you to know that I really do regret it."I nodded."I know."A little light came back into my father's eyes.A second later, I went on, "But your regret is your business. It has nothing to do with whether I forgive you."That little light went out at once. My father's lips wouldn't stop trembling."Then what else can I do? I'll give you anything."I looked at him."I'm already dead. I don't want anything."My father broke down, his voice rough with sobs."Elena... hit me. Yell at me."Make me suffer every one of those injuries too, okay? Just don't turn your back on your dad."I shook my head. My father froze."You think once you've been punished enough, I'm supposed to forgive you. But

Suddenly, everything around us went dark. When my father opened his eyes again, we were standing on the Palermo docks. Some men had 16-year-old me backed into a corner. I was terrified, clutching the jewelry I'd just pulled off.I kept saying, "This stuff is worth a lot. Take all of it! Just don't kill me!"The color left my father's face."Elena!"He rushed forward, but his hand went right through my body. The girl I used to be couldn't see him at all.Like a madman, my father threw himself in front of me."Get away from her!"But the men walked straight through him. He couldn't stop any of it.Then the scene changed. We were in the basement.I was curled up in a corner, clutching my broken ribs.I'd wanted so badly for my father to hold me. But he just stood outside the door, as calm and controlled as ever. "Take a good look," he told Matteo. "Going soft will get your family killed."My father rushed at his past self and tried to grab him."Shut up! Get her out of there! She's hurt!"

Many years later, my father was too old to get out of bed.Matteo sat by his bedside. After the doctor left, my father suddenly opened his cloudy eyes. He stared hard at the doorway, and tears spilled down his face."Elena?"My brother turned around in surprise, but the doorway was empty. Still, my father pushed against the mattress, using all his strength to try to sit up."Elena! It's really you!"I was the vision he saw as he lay dying. There I stood, still 22.My father reached out his hand."Come here. Let Dad take a look at you."I didn't move. His hand froze in midair."Are you still mad at your dad?""I'm not mad."My father's eyes lit up."Then did you come to take me with you?"I shook my head."No."My father went still."Then you...""I just came to take a look."He cried even harder."All these years, I've been waiting for you."I looked at him."But I haven't been waiting for you."My father's face went white. He opened his mouth. A long moment passed before he spoke, his

My father seemed unable to believe his eyes. He roughly wiped away his tears and stared at the letter. At last, he opened it with shaking hands. The first line read:"Dad, I'm sorry."My father started crying again. He gripped the letter tightly and kept reading."By the time you read this, I'll probably have left Sicily."Please don't be mad. I'm just a little tired."My father's breathing grew heavier."You always said my injuries meant something because Matteo would remember them."But Dad, to me, it was just one needless injury after another."I never did anything wrong, did I?"My father's hand jerked, and the paper rustled."I never blamed my brother."When he screwed up, he got scared too. He'd beg you not to punish me."The one who really scared me was you."Every time Matteo screwed up, you'd stare at me like a monster about to eat me alive. I was terrified."My father suddenly pressed the letter to his face. The sobs he'd been holding back finally broke loose."Elena..."No o

After stepping down, my father was no longer so busy. He finally had time to learn about my life. One rainy day, he walked into my room.Pietro Bellini, our old butler, was inside sorting through my things. When he saw my father, he stopped and gave a small, respectful nod."Sir."My father nodded without a word and walked over to the closet.A suitcase was standing there."What's this?"Pietro lowered his head."Elena packed it."My father turned back to him, puzzled."Packed it for what?""To leave Sicily."My father was taken aback. He crouched down and unzipped the suitcase.Clothes. A passport and ID. And a one-way plane ticket to London, dated 15 days after the kidnapping. My father held the ticket. His breathing quickened, and his hands started to shake."When did she buy this?""About a month ago."Pietro hesitated, but spoke anyway. "Elena told me not to tell anyone. Especially you."My father turned to him in disbelief. Pietro's eyes were red too."She said that if you knew,

The next day, my father called together the entire inner circle of the Moretti family.Matteo was summoned back too.Every seat at the long table was taken. My father sat at the head. Without warning, he announced, "As of today, I'm stepping down."The room erupted."Don! What are you saying?"Lorenzo shot to his feet."The Moretti family needs you!"My father raised a hand, and every voice fell silent. He looked at Matteo."Come here."My brother stared at him, stunned, and didn't move.My father took off the ring he'd worn for more than 20 years and set it on the table in front of his chair."This seat is yours."Matteo's expression changed."I don't want it."My father nodded."You can hate me. But you have to take over."My brother slammed his hand on the table."Why? Because of Elena?"My father's eyes reddened. The whole table was dead silent. After a long time, he swallowed hard and finally spoke."I've thought about this for a long time. I've made up my mind."You're kind and d
