Chapter 3

Autor: Chelsea
My brother didn't get up.

"If the price of being Don is hurting Elena, then I don't want it."

"What did you say?!"

My father's voice rose sharply.

A second later, I heard a chair crash over the line as someone kicked it aside.

"Matteo, I've spent more than 20 years grooming you!

"And now, over one little test, you're telling me you don't want to be Don?!"

My brother's voice shook with tears. "One little test? Dad, this test is putting Elena's life in danger!"

After a long silence, my father answered through clenched teeth.

"I've spent 22 whole years teaching you, and I can't believe you're still not good enough!

"With me here, Elena will be fine!

"But you! If we'd done things your way, Elena would already be dead!"

Hearing how sure of himself my father was, I closed my eyes in despair.

I suddenly remembered when I was 13. My brother had talked back to one of the elders at a family banquet, and my father had made me kneel in the main hall all night as punishment.

I could still hear what he'd said. "Matteo needs to remember this. When he acts on impulse, the people closest to him are the ones who get humiliated."

My knees stayed swollen for three days after that night, but my father didn't see anything wrong with it.

The kidnapper had been listening for a while, looking skeptical. Suddenly, he laughed. "Don Moretti, you really think this is your classroom?"

My father's voice hardened. "What do you mean? What are you talking about?"

"The six men you sent died three hours ago."

The line went silent. My brother leaped to his feet.

"What?!"

My father's voice turned sharp. "Who are you?"

The kidnapper laughed.

"Finally, the right question. But I'm not going to tell you.

"Go check the south road. See what's left of your men."

My father gave the order at once. "Get the team on the radio."

One call.

Two.

Six radios. Not a single answer.

The kidnapper went on, in no hurry at all.

"The cars, the guns, the masks, the radios. We took it all.

"And that check-in you got earlier? That was us too."

I slowly clenched my fists.

Less than a minute later, Lorenzo's call came through.

"Don, we found them.

"All six are dead. The bodies are on the south road."

"What?!"

My father shot to his feet so fast his chair crashed to the floor behind him.

"Useless idiots!"

In a rage, he swept every glass off the table.

"Six men have been dead for three hours, and you're only finding out now!"

My brother grabbed a gun, his eyes bloodshot. "Can I save her now?" he roared.

This time, my father finally stopped arguing. He sounded shaken.

"Lorenzo, take the soldiers in.

"I want Elena out of there alive!"

Soon, gunfire broke out outside the warehouse.

The kidnapper whipped around.

Some of the kidnappers ran for the back door. Someone grabbed the back of my chair and dragged me deeper inside.

My wounded leg was jolted again and again in the chaos.

Through the pain, I kept my eyes on the iron door and let myself hope.

Before long, I heard my brother's voice. "Elena!"

My brother burst in.

He slashed through the ropes and scooped me up in his arms.

"Look at me! Stay awake!"

I wanted to answer him, but all I could taste was blood.

My father was the last one to walk in.

When he saw my legs, the color drained from his face for a second. But he quickly regained his composure.

"See? I told you. With me here, Elena will be fine."

As my brother carried me past him, my father spoke up, perfectly sure of himself.

"Matteo, did you see how a real Don gets things done?

"If I hadn't been there guiding you today, there wouldn't be anything left of Elena to bury.

"Remember—"

My brother cut him off with a roar. "You're still lecturing at a time like this! If it weren't for you, Elena would—"

He looked down at my face as I drifted in and out of consciousness. He broke off mid-sentence and bolted for the door.

Half an hour later, I was wheeled into the Moretti family's private clinic.

Dr. Paolo Conti cut open my pant leg. Alarm flashed across his face.

"She's lost too much blood.

"Start a transfusion now. Prep her for surgery."

At last, I let myself breathe.

The operating room doors were about to close.

But my father suddenly reached out and stopped them.

He was staring at the blood bags in a nurse's hands.

"Wait.

"Who brought this blood?"

Old and hunched over, my father sat slumped on the ground. He didn't get up for a long time."Elena, I haven't had one good day in all these years."I lost your mom. And Matteo doesn't want to be close to me."I didn't say anything, so he hurried on, "I'm not asking you to feel sorry for me. I just want you to know that I really do regret it."I nodded."I know."A little light came back into my father's eyes.A second later, I went on, "But your regret is your business. It has nothing to do with whether I forgive you."That little light went out at once. My father's lips wouldn't stop trembling."Then what else can I do? I'll give you anything."I looked at him."I'm already dead. I don't want anything."My father broke down, his voice rough with sobs."Elena... hit me. Yell at me."Make me suffer every one of those injuries too, okay? Just don't turn your back on your dad."I shook my head. My father froze."You think once you've been punished enough, I'm supposed to forgive you. But

Suddenly, everything around us went dark. When my father opened his eyes again, we were standing on the Palermo docks. Some men had 16-year-old me backed into a corner. I was terrified, clutching the jewelry I'd just pulled off.I kept saying, "This stuff is worth a lot. Take all of it! Just don't kill me!"The color left my father's face."Elena!"He rushed forward, but his hand went right through my body. The girl I used to be couldn't see him at all.Like a madman, my father threw himself in front of me."Get away from her!"But the men walked straight through him. He couldn't stop any of it.Then the scene changed. We were in the basement.I was curled up in a corner, clutching my broken ribs.I'd wanted so badly for my father to hold me. But he just stood outside the door, as calm and controlled as ever. "Take a good look," he told Matteo. "Going soft will get your family killed."My father rushed at his past self and tried to grab him."Shut up! Get her out of there! She's hurt!"

Many years later, my father was too old to get out of bed.Matteo sat by his bedside. After the doctor left, my father suddenly opened his cloudy eyes. He stared hard at the doorway, and tears spilled down his face."Elena?"My brother turned around in surprise, but the doorway was empty. Still, my father pushed against the mattress, using all his strength to try to sit up."Elena! It's really you!"I was the vision he saw as he lay dying. There I stood, still 22.My father reached out his hand."Come here. Let Dad take a look at you."I didn't move. His hand froze in midair."Are you still mad at your dad?""I'm not mad."My father's eyes lit up."Then did you come to take me with you?"I shook my head."No."My father went still."Then you...""I just came to take a look."He cried even harder."All these years, I've been waiting for you."I looked at him."But I haven't been waiting for you."My father's face went white. He opened his mouth. A long moment passed before he spoke, his

My father seemed unable to believe his eyes. He roughly wiped away his tears and stared at the letter. At last, he opened it with shaking hands. The first line read:"Dad, I'm sorry."My father started crying again. He gripped the letter tightly and kept reading."By the time you read this, I'll probably have left Sicily."Please don't be mad. I'm just a little tired."My father's breathing grew heavier."You always said my injuries meant something because Matteo would remember them."But Dad, to me, it was just one needless injury after another."I never did anything wrong, did I?"My father's hand jerked, and the paper rustled."I never blamed my brother."When he screwed up, he got scared too. He'd beg you not to punish me."The one who really scared me was you."Every time Matteo screwed up, you'd stare at me like a monster about to eat me alive. I was terrified."My father suddenly pressed the letter to his face. The sobs he'd been holding back finally broke loose."Elena..."No o

After stepping down, my father was no longer so busy. He finally had time to learn about my life. One rainy day, he walked into my room.Pietro Bellini, our old butler, was inside sorting through my things. When he saw my father, he stopped and gave a small, respectful nod."Sir."My father nodded without a word and walked over to the closet.A suitcase was standing there."What's this?"Pietro lowered his head."Elena packed it."My father turned back to him, puzzled."Packed it for what?""To leave Sicily."My father was taken aback. He crouched down and unzipped the suitcase.Clothes. A passport and ID. And a one-way plane ticket to London, dated 15 days after the kidnapping. My father held the ticket. His breathing quickened, and his hands started to shake."When did she buy this?""About a month ago."Pietro hesitated, but spoke anyway. "Elena told me not to tell anyone. Especially you."My father turned to him in disbelief. Pietro's eyes were red too."She said that if you knew,

The next day, my father called together the entire inner circle of the Moretti family.Matteo was summoned back too.Every seat at the long table was taken. My father sat at the head. Without warning, he announced, "As of today, I'm stepping down."The room erupted."Don! What are you saying?"Lorenzo shot to his feet."The Moretti family needs you!"My father raised a hand, and every voice fell silent. He looked at Matteo."Come here."My brother stared at him, stunned, and didn't move.My father took off the ring he'd worn for more than 20 years and set it on the table in front of his chair."This seat is yours."Matteo's expression changed."I don't want it."My father nodded."You can hate me. But you have to take over."My brother slammed his hand on the table."Why? Because of Elena?"My father's eyes reddened. The whole table was dead silent. After a long time, he swallowed hard and finally spoke."I've thought about this for a long time. I've made up my mind."You're kind and d
