Chapter 7

Author: Dancing Marshmallow
One fine day, as I sat in my usual restaurant, a rather dramatic scene unfolded when Brenda, heavily pregnant, accosted me. Her face was pale, her eyes brimming with tears.

"Mary," she said, "I beg you to show me some mercy. Cain says this whole mess is my fault. If I can't earn your forgiveness, he'll never let me step foot in the Bassett family home again."

I stepped back, cutting her off before she could continue. "Mrs. Bassett, you'd better choose your words carefully. My engagement to Cain has been canceled. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. So why are you pleading with me?"

Her tears fell freely then. "Cain told me that you're the one he's always loved. And that it was my fault for deceiving him with a fake identity. If you don't forgive him, if you won't marry him, I'll kneel here and never get up."

And with that, she dropped to her knees with a dramatic thud.

Hailey stepped forward protectively. "Mrs. Bassett, have you no shame? First, you impersonated Ma

In the room, Brenda was sipping red wine, coyly feeding it mouth-to-mouth to Cain. Suddenly, the door burst open with a loud crash, sending her into a startled scream. "What are you doing?" she shrieked. Cain, already three sheets to the wind from the drinks he'd had before coming over, slumped in his chair. His drunken haze rendered him powerless, but he mustered enough strength to slam the table and bellow, "Do you people have a death wish?" Cora strode in, calm yet deadly. "Honey," she drawled, her tone laced with venom. "Today is our wedding night. Yet Brenda feigned a stomachache and lured you away. How touching. I've prepared a remedy for her. Bring it in!"Brenda paled, retreating instinctively. "What remedy? I won't drink it!" But Cora had come prepared. Refusal wasn't an option. A group of burly bodyguards surged forward, pinning Brenda down as another forced the entire bowl of bitter liquid into her mouth. She struggled violently, but they clamped her jaw shut, ensurin

Brenda shrieked, clutching her face and scurrying around like a cornered animal. "Cora! You've not even married into the Bassett family yet, and you're already going wild, beating people without reason?" Her voice rose in panic. "You're a wealthy young lady—calling for fists at every slight. Don't you know Cain hates women as coarse and violent as you?" She pressed her hands over her belly dramatically. "I'm carrying the Cain's eldest son! How dare you lay a finger on me?" Cora's face turned red with fury. A single glare from her, and her bodyguards closed in again. Chaos erupted as shouts and cries filled the luxury boutique. Amid the clamor, Brenda's piercing scream cut through the air, "Honey! Help me! My stomach—my baby! Someone save me!"Cain, who had been standing awkwardly to the side, tried to intervene but found himself helpless against the swarm. By the time the Bassett family's attendants arrived and pried the crowd apart, Brenda was already crumpled on the floor, clu

Well, it turned out that Brenda was once a classmate of Cain's during his years abroad. What started as a casual dalliance between them took a sharp turn a year ago when she showed up on his doorstep back in the country. Tearfully, she claimed to be neck-deep in debt to loan sharks and on the run from gangsters, with no one else to turn to. Moved by her pleas, Cain secretly took her into his home, and the two began living together like a couple under the same roof. Things took a twist three months ago when Brenda's belly started to show. She threw a fit, demanding Cain give her the title of his wife. Panicked, he concocted a harebrained scheme: a sham wedding. When she threatened to air all their dirty laundry live online if he didn't marry her, he reluctantly caved. After all, he reasoned, it wasn't as though they were registering the marriage legally. What harm could a ceremonial wedding do? Using the guise of his longstanding engagement to a Schindler family daughter, he con

Cain roughly flung her hand away. "I was always meant to marry Mary. You're nothing but an imposter. Since you're not Mary, our marriage is null and void." The so-called Mrs. Bassett clung to his sleeve, shaking it like a drowning woman grasping a log. "Honey, you promised to take care of me forever! Have you forgotten?" Cain's response was a swift and merciless slap. "Shameless! When did I ever make such a promise to you?" Brenda Harmon collapsed to the floor, stunned, her world crumbling beneath her. The romantic proposal, the grand wedding he had orchestrated for her—it had all felt like a fairy tale. Now, it seemed, the story had turned into a cruel farce, and she was its tragic heroine. My father stepped forward, his voice ringing with authority. "Take them both to the police station. I will get to the bottom of this—who dared to impersonate my daughter and even married under her name!" The bodyguards surged in, efficiently escorting Brenda away. Cain, however, stood his

I turned around, tears brimming instantly as I gasped, "Dad!" It was my parents, at last, arriving in Oberis City. My father, still clad in his formal suit from the meeting he must have left in a hurry, strode purposefully toward me, flanked by bodyguards and accompanied by several city officials. The crowd parted instinctively, creating a clear path as the aura of his authority swept through them. The bodyguards immediately shoved aside the men restraining me. I ran straight into my mother's arms, choking back sobs. Her hands trembled as she cupped my bruised face, her voice trembling with indignation. "Who dared to lay a hand on my daughter?" My father, his expression dark as thunderclouds, came to a halt before Cain, his piercing gaze reducing the man to a quivering shadow of his former arrogance. "Cain," my father said in a voice as cold as steel, "you must be a man of remarkable audacity. To strike and humiliate a citizen in public like this—is this your idea of power and
