Chapter 3

Author: Sundream
That afternoon, Natalie showed up at the Sinclair house carrying a box of wedding favor bags.

"Audrey, I picked out all the candy and snacks myself. Try them. Don't let all my hard work go to waste."

Derek unwrapped a piece and held it to my lips.

"Natalie compared hundreds of recipes. She put more thought into this than either of us."

I took a small bite. A nutty flavor spread immediately.

"Are there peanuts in this?"

Natalie blinked.

"I added peanut crumble on purpose. You used to love nutty flavors, didn't you?"

I'd been allergic to peanuts since college.

Once, I'd accidentally eaten some at a dinner and Natalie had been the one who took me to the ER.

She knew better than anyone in the Sinclair family.

I spat it out, but red welts were already rising on my arms and my chest was tightening.

"Natalie, I'm allergic to peanuts."

Her tears fell instantly.

"I'm sorry, Audrey. I've been so focused on your wedding prep that I mixed up your allergies with Mrs. Sinclair's dietary restrictions."

She grabbed my hand.

"I really was just trying to help. Please don't end our friendship over this."

Elaine frowned.

"Natalie has been running around for you two for so long. She made one mistake, and she's already in tears. What's with the look on your face?"

Resigned, I set the ingredients list on the table.

"I'm not scolding her. I'm telling you I'm having an allergic reaction."

But Derek's face showed impatience.

"You always have to make everything about facts. Natalie is your best friend, not your vendor. She went out of her way to help us. Can't you comfort her first?"

"Besides, you're the one with the allergy, not the guests. Just don't eat it."

I looked at him, and something clicked.

Whether the facts mattered depended on who had made the mistake.

If it were me, they'd say I lacked social grace.

If it were Natalie, any mistake was just her being overly enthusiastic.

"The wedding has been canceled."

Derek froze, then assumed I was still venting from the argument.

"Audrey, fighting is one thing, but don't blow everything out of proportion. This is exactly why people find you hard to be around."

Before he could finish, Natalie somehow swayed on her feet and collapsed into his arms.

"Natalie!"

Derek scooped her up and rushed out the door. Robert and Elaine followed. Not one of them looked back.

Before the door shut, I heard Elaine ask urgently whether Natalie's blood sugar had dropped from all the wedding stress.

Natalie's weak voice answered, "As long as Audrey's wedding goes smoothly, I don't mind being a little tired."

By then, the itching had spread across my body. Red welts bloomed on my face.

A severe allergic reaction can kill. But not a single person asked about me.

They rushed out with Natalie, and I took myself to the ER.

Triage. IV medication. Observation.

When the nurse asked for my emergency contact, I hesitated, then gave her Derek's number.

She tried twice. No answer.

"Is there anyone else?"

I thought for a long time.

Natalie used to be the first person I would have called.

Now she was leaning against my fiancé.

"No," I said.

After the welts faded, I spotted them in the hallway.

Natalie just had low blood sugar. She was resting against Derek's shoulder, sipping juice.

Elaine had draped her jacket over Natalie's shoulders. Robert stood nearby, asking if she still felt dizzy.

Natalie saw me first.

"Audrey, what are you doing here too? Are you still upset with me?"

Only then did Derek notice the welts on my arms.

"You had a reaction?"

"Yeah."

He hesitated, then pressed a signed photo into my hand.

"Alright, I know you're mad. This was supposed to be a surprise, but here."

"I didn't forget to get you a gift. This is Aiden Cole's signed photo, the star of the New York Empire. So stop making a fuss."

I looked at the photo and felt nothing but exhaustion.

"My favorite player is Ryan Kane of the Blue Waves."

Natalie spoke up quietly. "Derek, Aiden Cole is my favorite player."

Derek's expression froze for a split second.

Then he rubbed his temples.

"Aren't all star players the same? Natalie's happy with whatever she gets. Why do you always have to be so picky?"

This time, I didn't bother explaining.

Just like the New York Empire and the LA Blue Waves weren't the same team.

Natalie and I weren't the same person.

I went back to the infusion area. They left the hospital with Natalie.

Half an hour later, Derek texted:

“Natalie wants something to eat to bring her blood sugar up. I'm taking her out. When your IV's done, get a ride home.”

Natalie sent a text too, along with a photo of the three of them together:

“Don't be mad, Audrey. Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair and Derek are just worried about me. I know you love me the most. You wouldn't really hold this against me.”

She was certain I'd forgive her.

Just as Derek was certain I'd never leave.

A few days later, Derek came to see me again. He stood outside my office, eyes bloodshot."Audrey, I saw the messages.""I used to say she was your friend, that she'd never hurt you. The truth is, I was just using that line to justify my own favoritism.""I'm the one who let her cross the line, again and again. I'm the one who kept my parents from ever really knowing you."He held the engagement ring out to me."Give me one more chance. This time, there'll be no Natalie, and you won't have to win anyone over."I didn't take it."Even without her, what happened between us doesn't just disappear."Derek's hand slowly dropped.I walked past him toward the curb.He didn't follow.Because this time, he couldn't hide behind the excuse that Natalie had only been trying to help me.Logan was already waiting there. He didn't rush me. He just opened the car door when I walked up.Rachel had always thought Logan and I would be a good match. She'd just never said it outright while I had a boyfrien

The night Natalie was kicked out of the apartment, she sent me dozens of messages and showed up outside my office building dragging her suitcase behind her.Her eyes were rimmed with red, and the moment she saw me, she lost it and screamed, "What makes you so special, Audrey Wells?""You didn't have to lift a finger and still landed a boyfriend like Derek Sinclair. Now you toss him aside like it's nothing, and somehow everyone's still chasing after you?""You never deserved him."I looked at her calmly. My silence pushed her over the edge."Our whole lives, who's been out there fighting your battles?""You're so cold and blunt you don't even realize how many people you've offended. You wouldn't butter anyone up, so I had to. You couldn't say anything sweet, so I had to be the one who could. The less you tried, the harder I had to work.""Do you have any idea how much it hurts sometimes, the way you are? I've been by your side all these years. Why does everything end up being yours?"Sh

Derek returned to the apartment, hollowed out.Natalie had already made herself at home under the guise of comforting him and spent every day at his side. Now she was sitting on the couch in my pajamas, waiting for Derek."Derek, Audrey still won't come back?"She poured him a glass of water, softening her voice the way she always did."Don't be sad. Audrey's just too proud. She doesn't know how to comfort people. If she doesn't want you, I'm right here."Derek looked up at her.Natalie finally stopped saying "for the two of you.""I've liked you for a long time, actually." She stepped closer. "Your parents like me better too. Everything Audrey can't give you, I can—""Enough."Derek stepped back.He suddenly remembered that the first time Natalie met his parents, she hadn't known a thing about them.I was the one who brought her through the door. She'd claimed she was winning his parents' approval for me, all while memorizing every one of their preferences.Every time she wanted to jo

A week later, I returned to New York.I didn't go back to the apartment. I stayed at Rachel's place instead. When I went to the office to wrap up a handoff at work, Derek was waiting outside the building. He looked far more worn down after just a few days."Audrey, I know I was wrong."He stepped in front of me, his voice hoarse."There was never anything between Natalie and me. At first, I just thought she was your best friend. She was good with words, good at making my parents happy. She wanted to help you, so I was a little nicer to her.""Then my parents grew fonder and fonder of her, and I convinced myself that keeping her around would help you.""I never meant to replace you with her."I looked at him and asked, "Then at the airport that day, who did you choose?"The color drained from his face."When she was wearing my wedding dress, who did you compliment?""When I was having an allergic reaction, who did you carry to the hospital?""On our wedding day, who did you take to the

LA was three hours behind New York. When night had already fallen back east, the sky above Valley Stadium was still bright.Rachel had transferred the e-tickets to my account ahead of time. Logan had reserved a parking spot and sent me screenshots of the food vendors' ingredient lists from the visitor's guide."I marked all the vendors that use peanuts," he said. "But double-check for yourself too."Nobody called me difficult.Nobody used "good intentions" to force things on me I didn't want. When we scanned our tickets at the gate, a staff member handed me a commemorative pin.Rachel was about to clip it onto my jersey, then stopped."May I?"I blinked, then took the pin myself. It was such a small gesture, yet Natalie had never once asked. She would always link her arm through mine first, take my things first, answer on my behalf first, then smile and say we were the best of friends. It turned out that real closeness didn't give anyone permission to ignore boundaries. It meant knowin

After Natalie's cosplay event ended, she took her time removing her makeup, dragging the process out.Derek kept checking his phone. No messages from me."Audrey isn't really upset, is she?" Natalie asked carefully. "This is all my fault.""She's not."Derek answered quickly."Audrey just likes to nitpick. Once she cools down, she'll be fine. She knows you've always supported us."But even as he said it, his unease didn't fade.By the time they reached the hotel, friends and family had already gathered in the lobby. The wedding coordinator approached them, polite but direct. "Mr. Sinclair, there's no wedding booked in this ballroom today."Derek went rigid."That's impossible. It was confirmed."The coordinator checked the system. "There was a reservation, yes, but it was canceled two weeks ago. By the bride herself, last name... Wells?""The event package, catering, and band were all canceled by her personally."She pulled up the confirmation email. The timestamp was the day after Der
