Chapter 2

Author: Sundream
I left the Sinclair house alone.

Derek didn't call until that evening.

"What were you trying to say this afternoon?"

"Nothing."

I paused, then asked anyway. "Derek, don't you think Natalie's been crossing the line?"

"Our trip, the wedding, the apartment after the wedding. She has to be involved in everything. She's my friend, not a third person in our relationship."

Two seconds of silence, then he laughed.

"So that's what this is about."

"Natalie says the same thing every day: 'You two are perfect together.' If she had ulterior motives, would she really push us together this hard?"

"You're not great with my parents, and she happens to be charming. She keeps them happy for you. Isn't that doing you a favor?"

I stared at the shop window across the street.

He'd never once asked whether I wanted Natalie speaking on my behalf.

Every time I tried to express something honestly, the Sinclairs found me unlikable.

Natalie would wrap the same words in a smile and a sweet voice, and they'd call her considerate.

The more she "performed" for me, the more they felt I fell short of her in every way.

Derek was still talking. "After the wedding, I'll have her move out of the apartment. Stop making a fuss over your own best friend."

When the apartment was finished, Natalie had said she wanted to test the layout for us, just two nights.

Two nights turned into a week.

She put her skincare in my bathroom, hung her clothes in my closet, and told Elaine, "I'm keeping an eye on things so Derek doesn't push Audrey around after the wedding."

She'd also created a wedding planning group chat.

The group was called "Audrey and Derek's Happily-Ever-After Squad."

When the planner asked what flowers I liked, Natalie answered first, saying I didn't go for anything showy, and picked white roses, her own favorite.

When the hotel sent the menu, she said I was too busy and told everyone to just go with her choices.

I deleted the changes she'd made. She joked in the group chat:

“The bride is taking this way too seriously! I just wanted to lighten her load. Don't hold it against her for not humoring her best friend.”

Everyone sent smiley faces, as if I were the one ruining the mood.

Eventually, Elaine started dropping by the apartment every other day to see Natalie.

I was the one who was supposed to live there. Instead, I'd become the unwelcome one.

"Oh, and," Derek continued, "Natalie wants to be the maid of honor and hold your bouquet during the ceremony. I already said yes."

"Derek, let's break up."

Two seconds of silence on the other end.

"Over a maid of honor?"

"If you don't want that, I'll talk to Natalie. Stop using a breakup to scare me."

"The wedding's in three days. Cool down, and then we'll talk."

He hung up.

The next day, a set of photos appeared in the family group chat.

Natalie was wearing my wedding dress, standing beside Derek in a tailored suit.

She had her arm linked through his, smiling like the real bride.

“It's such a shame Audrey couldn't make it to LA. This gorgeous dress was just sitting there, so as their number one supporter, I had to try it on and see how it looked on camera.”

Then she tagged me directly:

“Audrey won't mind, right? Everything I've done is to make your wedding even better.

The group chat erupted with compliments.”

Elaine wrote: “Natalie looks so elegant in it.”

Derek replied: “It really does fit her well.”

I messaged him privately, asking why he'd let Natalie wear my wedding dress.

He replied: “You two used to swap clothes all the time in college, didn't you? She's your best friend, not a stranger.”

I stared at those words for a long time.

In college, she'd borrowed an ordinary jacket.

Now she was wearing my one and only wedding dress, her arm linked through my fiancé's.

And he still used "you're best friends" to demand I give up my boundaries.

I stared at that message, my stomach turning.

She used our friendship as an excuse to wear my wedding dress and link arms with my fiancé.

And everyone was waiting for me to praise how dedicated she was.

If I minded, I'd be betraying her "good intentions."

My phone lit up.

My friend and colleague Rachel Torres texted:

“Got the Blue Waves tickets for the game in three days. If you want to go, Logan and I will come with you.”

I replied with one word:

“Okay.”

A few days later, Derek came to see me again. He stood outside my office, eyes bloodshot."Audrey, I saw the messages.""I used to say she was your friend, that she'd never hurt you. The truth is, I was just using that line to justify my own favoritism.""I'm the one who let her cross the line, again and again. I'm the one who kept my parents from ever really knowing you."He held the engagement ring out to me."Give me one more chance. This time, there'll be no Natalie, and you won't have to win anyone over."I didn't take it."Even without her, what happened between us doesn't just disappear."Derek's hand slowly dropped.I walked past him toward the curb.He didn't follow.Because this time, he couldn't hide behind the excuse that Natalie had only been trying to help me.Logan was already waiting there. He didn't rush me. He just opened the car door when I walked up.Rachel had always thought Logan and I would be a good match. She'd just never said it outright while I had a boyfrien

The night Natalie was kicked out of the apartment, she sent me dozens of messages and showed up outside my office building dragging her suitcase behind her.Her eyes were rimmed with red, and the moment she saw me, she lost it and screamed, "What makes you so special, Audrey Wells?""You didn't have to lift a finger and still landed a boyfriend like Derek Sinclair. Now you toss him aside like it's nothing, and somehow everyone's still chasing after you?""You never deserved him."I looked at her calmly. My silence pushed her over the edge."Our whole lives, who's been out there fighting your battles?""You're so cold and blunt you don't even realize how many people you've offended. You wouldn't butter anyone up, so I had to. You couldn't say anything sweet, so I had to be the one who could. The less you tried, the harder I had to work.""Do you have any idea how much it hurts sometimes, the way you are? I've been by your side all these years. Why does everything end up being yours?"Sh

Derek returned to the apartment, hollowed out.Natalie had already made herself at home under the guise of comforting him and spent every day at his side. Now she was sitting on the couch in my pajamas, waiting for Derek."Derek, Audrey still won't come back?"She poured him a glass of water, softening her voice the way she always did."Don't be sad. Audrey's just too proud. She doesn't know how to comfort people. If she doesn't want you, I'm right here."Derek looked up at her.Natalie finally stopped saying "for the two of you.""I've liked you for a long time, actually." She stepped closer. "Your parents like me better too. Everything Audrey can't give you, I can—""Enough."Derek stepped back.He suddenly remembered that the first time Natalie met his parents, she hadn't known a thing about them.I was the one who brought her through the door. She'd claimed she was winning his parents' approval for me, all while memorizing every one of their preferences.Every time she wanted to jo

A week later, I returned to New York.I didn't go back to the apartment. I stayed at Rachel's place instead. When I went to the office to wrap up a handoff at work, Derek was waiting outside the building. He looked far more worn down after just a few days."Audrey, I know I was wrong."He stepped in front of me, his voice hoarse."There was never anything between Natalie and me. At first, I just thought she was your best friend. She was good with words, good at making my parents happy. She wanted to help you, so I was a little nicer to her.""Then my parents grew fonder and fonder of her, and I convinced myself that keeping her around would help you.""I never meant to replace you with her."I looked at him and asked, "Then at the airport that day, who did you choose?"The color drained from his face."When she was wearing my wedding dress, who did you compliment?""When I was having an allergic reaction, who did you carry to the hospital?""On our wedding day, who did you take to the

LA was three hours behind New York. When night had already fallen back east, the sky above Valley Stadium was still bright.Rachel had transferred the e-tickets to my account ahead of time. Logan had reserved a parking spot and sent me screenshots of the food vendors' ingredient lists from the visitor's guide."I marked all the vendors that use peanuts," he said. "But double-check for yourself too."Nobody called me difficult.Nobody used "good intentions" to force things on me I didn't want. When we scanned our tickets at the gate, a staff member handed me a commemorative pin.Rachel was about to clip it onto my jersey, then stopped."May I?"I blinked, then took the pin myself. It was such a small gesture, yet Natalie had never once asked. She would always link her arm through mine first, take my things first, answer on my behalf first, then smile and say we were the best of friends. It turned out that real closeness didn't give anyone permission to ignore boundaries. It meant knowin

After Natalie's cosplay event ended, she took her time removing her makeup, dragging the process out.Derek kept checking his phone. No messages from me."Audrey isn't really upset, is she?" Natalie asked carefully. "This is all my fault.""She's not."Derek answered quickly."Audrey just likes to nitpick. Once she cools down, she'll be fine. She knows you've always supported us."But even as he said it, his unease didn't fade.By the time they reached the hotel, friends and family had already gathered in the lobby. The wedding coordinator approached them, polite but direct. "Mr. Sinclair, there's no wedding booked in this ballroom today."Derek went rigid."That's impossible. It was confirmed."The coordinator checked the system. "There was a reservation, yes, but it was canceled two weeks ago. By the bride herself, last name... Wells?""The event package, catering, and band were all canceled by her personally."She pulled up the confirmation email. The timestamp was the day after Der
