Chapter 1

Yunyun
I had barely replied to the message when Nathan walked out with the woman in the wedding gown on his arm.

The moment our eyes met, panic flooded his face.

But the photographer had already set up and started shooting. I was told to help the bride adjust her gown.

"Careful, assistant. If you damage it, you can't afford to pay for it."

The secretary trailing behind the couple barked the order at me, her tone dripping with condescension.

I bit my lip, avoiding Nathan's burning stare, and carefully smoothed the bride's train.

Twenty-five million dollars was an astronomical figure to someone like me.

I was truly terrified of being poor!

The moment the shoot wrapped, Nathan tossed his suit jacket aside and strode toward me.

"Stella, I didn't want to hide this from you.

"Chloe's been walking on eggshells with the Ashford family. The wedding, the photos, it's all just to put her at ease."

I listened to every word and almost laughed at the absurdity.

"So you knew who I really was all along, and you pretended to be poor just to ship me overseas for her sake. Is that it?"

Guilt flickered across Nathan's eyes. He reached out to pull me close.

I sidestepped him and met his silence with a level stare.

"Stella, don't make this hard for me, okay?"

His voice caught, and he looked at me with the same tenderness he always had.

Behind him, Chloe floated over in her sweeping cathedral-train gown and looped her arm through his with practiced ease.

"You've been with Nathan for three years already. Can't you just let me have the ceremony? It's only a formality."

Her voice was sweet and syrupy, but her eyes glinted with the superiority of someone tossing scraps to a beggar.

I took in Chloe's couture gown, elegant as a rose in full bloom.

Then I looked down at my own shirt, faded almost white from countless washes. The irony almost made me laugh.

"Fine. But I want to go back to the Ashfords."

I swallowed the sting behind my eyes, and my voice came out stubborn.

Nathan frowned, disappointment coloring his voice.

"Stella, when did you become so materialistic?"

I stared at him in disbelief. He suddenly felt like a complete stranger.

Once upon a time, Nathan had fought countless underground boxing matches for me.

He'd come home to our cramped, run-down apartment with cuts on his face still oozing blood.

But his eyes would shine as he pressed a debit card into my hands.

"I've saved enough to send you abroad!"

After moving abroad, I worked while studying and sent home everything I earned beyond my living expenses.

For years, I pushed myself until my body started breaking down, but I never dared stop.

And now, all I wanted was to go back to my real parents.

In Nathan's eyes, that made me materialistic.

"Stella, this was always your place. I'll give it back."

Tears cascaded down Chloe's face. She grabbed my hand, her voice brimming with sincerity.

But the moment she leaned in close, I heard the smugness she'd buried under that performance.

"Stella, you'll spend the rest of your life in the gutter. Stop dreaming of anything better!"

The next instant, Chloe stumbled in her heels and crashed to the floor with a cry of pain.

The emerald bracelet on her wrist cracked against her skin, and blood welled up from the gash.

"Chloe!"

Nathan's eyes went wide with panic. He scooped Chloe into his arms.

The look he turned on me was pure ice. He ground out an order to the bodyguard behind him, barely containing his fury.

"Lock her in the isolation room. Let her cool off for a few days.

"Stella, I am so disappointed in you!"

Nathan didn't give me a chance to explain.

The bodyguards grabbed me and hauled me away while I watched Nathan carry Chloe out without looking back.

When they threw me into the pitch-black isolation room, terror crashed over me in waves.

I was claustrophobic. The old Nathan, no matter how busy he was, always made it home before dark to be with me.

I wrapped my arms tight around my knees and curled into a ball.

"Nathan, I'm so scared..."

"Your problems have nothing to do with me anymore."I frowned. Nathan's mental state looked as battered as his body."I know. But I want to give you the chance to vent, even if you don't care anymore."Nathan's laugh was hollow and self-mocking, his voice so hoarse it was startling.I smiled coldly, my voice like frost."Too bad. When I was pregnant, you had someone terminate it behind my back. I didn't even get basic recovery care."How exactly am I supposed to vent about that?"Nathan stepped forward, hope flaring in his voice."However you want. Please, Stella. Don't leave me behind."Julian appeared and pulled me into his arms, putting distance between us and Nathan."That's the guy, isn't it?"Julian, whose voice was always gentle with me, had turned to ice.Nathan already knew I'd moved on.But seeing me in another man's arms, the anguish and despair in his eyes threatened to consume him whole."This is between Stella and—"Nathan didn't get to finish. Julian and I fell into an easy, natural rhythm.Exactly three months after we met, he showed up with a bouquet and told me he was in love with me.I saw my own reflection in the depths of his eyes. And I knew, finally, that I was ready.Megan watched the whole thing, laughing and crying at the same time."Julian, if you ever treat Stella badly, I'll sue you into the ground!"I pulled Megan into a hug and patted her back. That darkness hadn't just scarred me.It had terrified everyone who loved me.I took Julian to meet Grandma. After a brief stay in the city, the old woman had stubbornly insisted on moving back to her house in the countryside. The best I could do was hire a professional caretaker for her.I had the house renovated with senior-friendly fixtures and furniture to keep her safe."Grandma, this is my fiancé, Julian."I introduced him with care, and he held my hand firmly through it."Ma'am, I'm a lawyer. I'm the one who pursued Stella."You might not trust me yet, but I'll

I didn't realize Megan's idea of "unwinding" was a bar until I walked through the door.I'd never had a drink in my life, so I ordered a random cocktail from the bar.The energy was infectious. I didn't mind it."Hey gorgeous, let me buy you a drink!"A visibly drunk man dropped into the seat beside me, his eyes roaming over me without shame. Before I could respond, a man who'd been sitting just behind me stood and stepped in front of me.He was tall enough to block the drunk's leering gaze entirely."You're drunk. Get lost and sleep it off."The drunk muttered something and slunk away."Thanks.""No need. You could've handled it yourself."His voice was cool and steady, the kind that put you at ease.I was a little surprised he'd stepped in. If the drunk had tried anything, my family's bodyguards would have handled it."Julian Reed. I'm a lawyer."A faint smile curved the corner of his mouth. His manner was effortlessly polished."Stella."Surprise flickered in Julian's eyes, then a r

Nathan let out a bitter laugh and kept going."I never actually married her. The license photo on Facebook was staged to make you jealous, to prove you still loved me."Back then, the boxing was just a hobby. But watching you ache for me every time I got hurt—that's when I knew I'd fallen for you, completely."But I was afraid you might only love me for the Everett fortune, so I pretended to have nothing."As he spoke, a flicker of hope crept back into his eyes.I looked away, my expression frozen."Sending you abroad wasn't about Chloe either. I was just afraid that once you went back to the Ashfords, you wouldn't want a liar like me anymore."I shook my head, bone-tired. This love built on nothing but schemes made my stomach turn."I only found out later that you had a claustrophobia attack in that room."But Chloe bribed the guards to lock you up on her own. I really didn't know..."I listened calmly, without a shred of surprise. The bodyguard who'd held me down at the hospital that

The next time I heard about Nathan and Chloe, it was from Megan, barely able to contain her excitement."Stella, Nathan keeps reaching out to me, trying to find out where you are."Ever since I reunited with my parents, they'd kept me hidden and protected.Nathan, for all his resources, couldn't find me."Your parents investigated everything. Chloe was never pregnant."She was afraid you'd take Nathan and the Ashford name back, so she used a blood bag to frame you!"Only an idiot like Nathan would fall for her act."The more Megan talked, the more satisfaction crept into her voice, as if she were settling my scores for me.My hand drifted to my stomach without thinking.Chloe had never lost a child. But I had truly lost one."Don't dwell on it. It's time to move forward."Megan squeezed my hand, her eyes full of encouragement.I nodded and began applying for a master's program in France. My advisor had always been impressed with my academic work, and now I was pouring everything I had
