Chapter 2

Author: mina
Ten years ago, the Harrison family's docks had been bombed, and rivals had cut off their drug trade.

Just when the situation seemed hopeless, Theodore's father, Sterling Harrison, came to me in person and begged for my help.

He promised I could choose the next Harrison heir and transferred a 30% stake directly to me.

Helping the Harrison family back then cost me, too.

An overseas drug deal I'd already set up fell apart, and the shipment ended up in the hands of my biggest rival.

Theodore came to me and, with remarkable courage, helped me recover the shipment. Because of that, I managed to expand my drug trade into the Middle East.

After that, Theodore always seemed to show up whenever I was worn out.

When I was too busy to eat, he'd cook for me himself and bring the food right to me.

When I worked late, he'd drive over and wait downstairs for me.

When rivals ambushed us, he even took a bullet for me.

His devotion moved me, and I fell in love with him.

Later, when Sterling died unexpectedly, five of his older relatives on the Harrison board wanted to take his place.

Theodore, on the other hand, was only running black-market deals overseas at the time. He was nothing more than the illegitimate son Sterling had left behind.

I sat beside Theodore through board meeting after board meeting, negotiating on his behalf and winning over the stubborn elders. In the end, I forced them to accept him as the Harrison family's future heir.

Theodore got busier, too.

In just three years, he doubled the Harrison family's business.

He seemed as attentive to me as ever.

No matter how busy the arms deals kept him, he took me out once a week.

He picked out gifts for me with care and chose the restaurants himself. We made memories together all over New York.

But the truth was, every one of those memories included his childhood friend, Layla.

Theodore gave Layla my place in the passenger seat.

The bouquets he'd picked out so carefully ended up in Layla's arms while she posed excitedly for pictures.

Even the managers at every restaurant we visited assumed Theodore and Layla were a couple.

I did tell Theodore how much it bothered me.

But every time, he'd just laugh, pull me into his arms, and kiss my forehead.

"Hailey, you're the one I'm going to marry. To me, Layla's just a kid.

"She already works herself ragged running the armory for me. I can't say no to something this small. But if it bothers you, I won't bring her next time, okay?

"Once the wedding's over, I'll take you to Norway for our honeymoon."

I nodded, only half believing him. But the next time we went out, there was Layla again.

I told myself everything would be fine once we were married.

But all of Theodore's friends said Layla was a better fit for him than I was.

She was innocent, bubbly, and kind.

I was none of those things. I'd been involved in the Amherst family's cross-border drug business from a young age, and I'd lost the innocence someone my age was supposed to have.

What a joke.

They'd all forgotten that I'd chosen Theodore without hesitation. That was the only reason he became the Harrison heir.

The day he proposed, he got down on one knee and put the key to the wardrobe that held the heirloom gown in my palm.

He swore he'd cherish me, be faithful to me, and take care of me.

Now, though, that same gown, handed down since Queen Victoria's reign, was draped over Layla as if it meant nothing.

And my fiancé was standing there, admiring her.

Suddenly, I wanted to laugh.

This time, I didn't want the dress or the man.

He froze.I held his gaze and spoke slowly. "Layla was nothing more than a tool you used to prove yourself."You hated my status. You hated that I was the one who chose you. But you couldn't deny it: you only got where you are because I chose you."So you paraded sweet, eager-to-please Layla right in front of me."I stood up and walked over to him. "You wanted to show me that you had someone whose whole world revolved around you too."You wanted to look powerful in front of Layla, so you gave her things that belonged to me. And you loved watching me feel humiliated and hurt right in front of you, didn't you?""No. No, that's not true."Theodore's lips trembled, and his voice shook. "Hailey, I really do love you. Our eight years together were real!""What do you love about me?"I scoffed. "You love my shares. You love that I can deal with the board for you, get the Amherst family to back you, and help you escape the stigma of being an illegitimate son!"You never loved me for me."I tur

News that Theodore had been cast out of the Harrison family spread even faster than I'd expected. That night, I sat at my desk and opened the files Ivy had put together.Page after page listed every deal Theodore had handled for the Harrison family over the years.Drugs, arms, money laundering. Every single deal was documented down to the smallest detail.I tapped my fingers on the desk. "As far as I know, Theodore has two large warehouses where he stores his own stock. Even without the Harrison family behind him, he can still supply his customers on his own."Ivy, have the families he did business with gotten back to us?"Ivy stood beside the desk, calm as ever. "All of them have."The Sicilians have announced that they won't accept any shipment tied to Theodore."The Amherst family's ports are closed to him, and all the overland transit points he'd need belong to Leo."With no buyers and no shipping routes, Theodore's drugs can only sit in those warehouses forever."I nodded, satisfi

I turned to Anthony, surprised and delighted. "When did you set all this up?""In the car, on the way over."His hand was warm and dry, his fingertips lightly callused from years of handling a gun.He smiled at me, his eyes gentle. "Hailey, I hope you don't mind that I arranged all this without asking you first."But I figured nothing helps you unwind like a party."He stroked the back of my hand. "I don't want to see you unhappy."It took me a second to process his words, and my ears grew warm. This was only the second time we'd met, and yet he acted like he'd known me for years.Out on the lawn, Annie, one of my closest friends, stood at the front of the crowd. She rushed over and threw her arms around me."Hailey! You were amazing."She pulled back, her eyes red. "You should've done this ages ago. Do you know how long I've had to put up with Layla?"And Theodore! Somebody should've told him to get lost a long time ago. Without you, he's nothing."Annie grew more worked up, her voice

Howard adjusted his glasses and took the agreement. The chapel was so quiet that the only sound was people breathing. After a long while, his head snapped up and he looked at me. His voice was hoarse. "The agreement is real."All the color drained from Theodore's face at once.He swayed and had to grab the pew behind him just to stay on his feet."It bears Sterling Harrison's own signature and the Harrison family seal. It's fully binding."Howard's voice was low. "Under the terms of this agreement, if the heir betrays Ms. Amherst in any way, all Harrison family shares in his name automatically transfer to Ms. Amherst."And... his status as heir ends immediately.""That's impossible!"Theodore lunged forward and snatched the agreement from him. "It's fake! My father would never sign something like this! I'm his son!"I looked at him without a shred of pity.Right on cue, Leo stepped forward with a respectful expression. "Well then, Ms. Amherst, can we revisit the matter of the heir?"He

At that, Theodore spun around.Layla stood there looking lost. The color had drained from her cheeks, and her eyes were wide with panic."Layla was just..."Theodore gritted his teeth. "Layla was just helping out with the rehearsal. Hailey's my fiancée. We've been together for eight years!"As soon as the words left Theodore's mouth, Anthony laughed openly at him. "Theodore, I honestly don't know how you have the nerve to say that."For eight years, you took Hailey's patience for granted. Every time she gave in, you treated it as a weakness you could exploit whenever you wanted."You even let Layla wear our family's heirloom gown!"Anthony didn't raise his voice, yet every word reached every corner of the chapel. "I've waited eight years, and Ms. Amherst has finally chosen me."Now I'm the man she's chosen to marry!"Leo stood at the front of the crowd, unable to hide how pleased he was."Enough!" Theodore's voice was shrill. His tie had been knocked crooked in the scuffle, and all tra

I turned toward the voice.Anthony Harrison walked into the chapel in a sharply tailored dark suit. His shoes clicked against the marble floor, and every head turned his way.The last time I'd seen him was eight years earlier, when I'd rejected him in person. After that, our paths never crossed again. He never even showed up at Harrison family dinners.Whenever anyone asked Leo about Anthony, he would stare straight at me and say in a strange tone that his grandson had been hurt and needed time to recover. At first, I thought Anthony had actually been injured. Only much later did I understand what Leo meant. But I didn't believe it. After all, Anthony had been perfectly calm when he walked away that day. Now, as he approached me, he looked like the gentle man I remembered, the one who had bowed out so gracefully. Yet something about him felt different. He seemed more mature than I remembered. His jaw was sharper, and his expression had grown calmer. He stopped in front of me and looked
