Chapter 3

Just then, the butler knocked on the door.

He could obviously tell something was off. He hesitated in the doorway for a few seconds.

"Mr. Harrison, Ms. Brooks, the minister is here. The rehearsal can begin."

Theodore checked his watch and frowned. He sounded impatient. "Hailey, go put on the dress. Don't keep everyone waiting for us."

I stayed right where I was and didn't move.

The maid was still holding the plain dress, its satin gleaming under the lights.

I was Hailey Amherst, heir to the Amherst family and the future matriarch of the Harrison family.

There was no way I'd show up to my own wedding rehearsal in that dress.

If I did, I'd be the laughingstock of New York high society.

"I'm not wearing it."

Theodore froze, and his face darkened. "Hailey, stop making a scene.

"It's just a rehearsal. What does it matter what you wear? Everyone's waiting for us. Do you really have to throw a tantrum right now?

"I flew back from Sicily overnight for you. Isn't that enough?"

I gave him a mocking smile, then glanced pointedly at Layla. "Did you really rush back for me?

"Honestly, you two look more like the real couple. Don't you think so, Layla?"

Layla's hand was still resting on Theodore's arm. She looked shocked.

"Ms. Amherst, how could you think that about me?

"Theodore gave me this himself. It was a gift. But if you want it, I can take it off and give it back..."

As she said it, she reached behind her for the zipper.

But her fingers fumbled, tearing off the pearls that were already coming loose at the waist.

"Sorry, I'm so sorry."

She bit her lip and spoke in a sickly sweet voice. "Or I could do the rehearsal in Ms. Amherst's place.

"I'm already wearing the dress, so nobody would even notice. Let Ms. Amherst take a break and get some rest."

She said it in a breathy, girlish voice and looked up at Theodore expectantly.

Theodore shook his head, his eyes locked on me. "No need.

"Hailey, how can the bride miss her own rehearsal? I'm only going to say this one more time. Put on the dress!"

I gave Theodore a cold look, as if I'd never known him at all.

While we were planning the wedding, I'd told him countless times what my dream wedding would look like.

I'd picked out the venue and the flowers myself. I'd even flown to Italy and Greece to see places in person.

I'd done it all so I could wear the heirloom gown and have the perfect wedding.

But now he'd forgotten all of it. He wanted me to throw on any old dress and just get our wedding over with.

"No."

I spoke slowly. "Theodore, I'm not wearing it.

"This rule has been passed down in the Harrison family for 100 years, and it must be followed. Without that gown, the wedding doesn't count."

"You're threatening me with the rules?"

Theodore let go of Layla and took a few steps toward me. His voice dropped low. "Hailey, you think I can't keep my position as heir without you?

"Hasn't every part of the Harrison family's business depended on me these past few years?

"Those old fossils on the board? You really think they'd dare touch me?"

He stood over me, looking down his nose at me. "I'm only going to say this one more time, Hailey. Go put on the dress."

I ignored him.

The dressing room was so quiet I could hear the lace on Layla's skirt rustling.

Out on the lawn beyond the house, soft music had already started to play.

Theodore's expression grew darker by the second. Then, out of nowhere, he let out a cold, humorless laugh.

"Fine."

He turned and slid an arm around Layla's waist. "Layla, let's go."

Layla leaned against his chest. A smug look flashed across her face, but she hid it just as fast.

She blinked innocently. "Theodore, are you sure that's okay?"

She clung tightly to Theodore's shirt. "You really mean it? But I was only joking with Ms. Amherst."

"Of course."

With his arm around her, Theodore walked past me, then stopped.

"Think this through, Hailey.

"By the time the rehearsal's over, either you're standing in that chapel in this dress, or..."

He didn't finish. He just walked out with his arm around Layla.

He froze.I held his gaze and spoke slowly. "Layla was nothing more than a tool you used to prove yourself."You hated my status. You hated that I was the one who chose you. But you couldn't deny it: you only got where you are because I chose you."So you paraded sweet, eager-to-please Layla right in front of me."I stood up and walked over to him. "You wanted to show me that you had someone whose whole world revolved around you too."You wanted to look powerful in front of Layla, so you gave her things that belonged to me. And you loved watching me feel humiliated and hurt right in front of you, didn't you?""No. No, that's not true."Theodore's lips trembled, and his voice shook. "Hailey, I really do love you. Our eight years together were real!""What do you love about me?"I scoffed. "You love my shares. You love that I can deal with the board for you, get the Amherst family to back you, and help you escape the stigma of being an illegitimate son!"You never loved me for me."I tur

News that Theodore had been cast out of the Harrison family spread even faster than I'd expected. That night, I sat at my desk and opened the files Ivy had put together.Page after page listed every deal Theodore had handled for the Harrison family over the years.Drugs, arms, money laundering. Every single deal was documented down to the smallest detail.I tapped my fingers on the desk. "As far as I know, Theodore has two large warehouses where he stores his own stock. Even without the Harrison family behind him, he can still supply his customers on his own."Ivy, have the families he did business with gotten back to us?"Ivy stood beside the desk, calm as ever. "All of them have."The Sicilians have announced that they won't accept any shipment tied to Theodore."The Amherst family's ports are closed to him, and all the overland transit points he'd need belong to Leo."With no buyers and no shipping routes, Theodore's drugs can only sit in those warehouses forever."I nodded, satisfi

I turned to Anthony, surprised and delighted. "When did you set all this up?""In the car, on the way over."His hand was warm and dry, his fingertips lightly callused from years of handling a gun.He smiled at me, his eyes gentle. "Hailey, I hope you don't mind that I arranged all this without asking you first."But I figured nothing helps you unwind like a party."He stroked the back of my hand. "I don't want to see you unhappy."It took me a second to process his words, and my ears grew warm. This was only the second time we'd met, and yet he acted like he'd known me for years.Out on the lawn, Annie, one of my closest friends, stood at the front of the crowd. She rushed over and threw her arms around me."Hailey! You were amazing."She pulled back, her eyes red. "You should've done this ages ago. Do you know how long I've had to put up with Layla?"And Theodore! Somebody should've told him to get lost a long time ago. Without you, he's nothing."Annie grew more worked up, her voice

Howard adjusted his glasses and took the agreement. The chapel was so quiet that the only sound was people breathing. After a long while, his head snapped up and he looked at me. His voice was hoarse. "The agreement is real."All the color drained from Theodore's face at once.He swayed and had to grab the pew behind him just to stay on his feet."It bears Sterling Harrison's own signature and the Harrison family seal. It's fully binding."Howard's voice was low. "Under the terms of this agreement, if the heir betrays Ms. Amherst in any way, all Harrison family shares in his name automatically transfer to Ms. Amherst."And... his status as heir ends immediately.""That's impossible!"Theodore lunged forward and snatched the agreement from him. "It's fake! My father would never sign something like this! I'm his son!"I looked at him without a shred of pity.Right on cue, Leo stepped forward with a respectful expression. "Well then, Ms. Amherst, can we revisit the matter of the heir?"He

At that, Theodore spun around.Layla stood there looking lost. The color had drained from her cheeks, and her eyes were wide with panic."Layla was just..."Theodore gritted his teeth. "Layla was just helping out with the rehearsal. Hailey's my fiancée. We've been together for eight years!"As soon as the words left Theodore's mouth, Anthony laughed openly at him. "Theodore, I honestly don't know how you have the nerve to say that."For eight years, you took Hailey's patience for granted. Every time she gave in, you treated it as a weakness you could exploit whenever you wanted."You even let Layla wear our family's heirloom gown!"Anthony didn't raise his voice, yet every word reached every corner of the chapel. "I've waited eight years, and Ms. Amherst has finally chosen me."Now I'm the man she's chosen to marry!"Leo stood at the front of the crowd, unable to hide how pleased he was."Enough!" Theodore's voice was shrill. His tie had been knocked crooked in the scuffle, and all tra

I turned toward the voice.Anthony Harrison walked into the chapel in a sharply tailored dark suit. His shoes clicked against the marble floor, and every head turned his way.The last time I'd seen him was eight years earlier, when I'd rejected him in person. After that, our paths never crossed again. He never even showed up at Harrison family dinners.Whenever anyone asked Leo about Anthony, he would stare straight at me and say in a strange tone that his grandson had been hurt and needed time to recover. At first, I thought Anthony had actually been injured. Only much later did I understand what Leo meant. But I didn't believe it. After all, Anthony had been perfectly calm when he walked away that day. Now, as he approached me, he looked like the gentle man I remembered, the one who had bowed out so gracefully. Yet something about him felt different. He seemed more mature than I remembered. His jaw was sharper, and his expression had grown calmer. He stopped in front of me and looked
