Chapter 3

Autor: Madam Fenghuo
Beth's eyes were bloodshot, and her veil had gone crooked in her rush to get there.

She walked into the council room with tears streaming down her face.

"We've fought so hard to get here. If the Donna's say-so can wipe out all those years of work, I'd rather die right here!"

Beth was sobbing so hard she couldn't speak. Her knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed.

The sight only made the members angrier.

"Beth has waited all these years. She and Colton have been engaged forever. They were only waiting for him to join the inner circle before they got married."

"If the Donna weren't so determined to stop him, they never would have been driven this far!"

"Right. After everything they've been through to get here... It's just sad."

I was in the security room, watching the camera feed.

I watched the crowd grow angrier. Colton stood at the center of it all, looking like the most honorable man alive as he fanned the flames. Beth played the helpless victim to win their sympathy.

I felt nothing.

Beth hadn't changed. She still loved playing the helpless victim, as though no one else in the world had ever been treated so unfairly.

Just then, someone knocked on the security room door.

I turned around. A guard relayed a message. "Donna, Beth's mother, Evelyn Greco, is at the door. She wants to see you."

I turned away from the door and lit a cigar.

The moment she walked in, she said in a shaky voice, "Donna, please stop going after Colton."

I hadn't heard her voice in more than ten years. It had changed.

Her voice no longer had the softness that used to lull me to sleep. Gone too were the warmth and patience she'd shown when teaching me to read.

She had once stood in line for three hours to buy me a cake.

But she was also the woman who had moved Beth into my room just three days after I disappeared.

I drew a steadying breath before answering, "He's rotten. I'm not going after him. I'm getting rid of a threat to the family."

My mother protested, "He's not like that!

"I watched him grow up. I know him.

"Years ago, my daughter Alice fell into the sea. We never found her, dead or alive. He was so wracked with guilt that he wanted to throw himself into the water too.

"All these years, even after he got engaged to Beth, he's visited Alice's memorial every single year. How can you say a kind man like him has no morals?"

I laughed, a cold, humorless sound, half hidden in the cigar smoke.

My birthday party that year had been on a yacht. I had bodyguards with me, and the railing was taller than I was.

So how could I possibly have slipped and fallen overboard?

My parents never looked into it. They didn't even send divers to search for a body.

The whole matter was quietly buried, just like that.

"If I say something's wrong with him, I have a reason," I said softly. "Why else would I go after him? You tell me."

My mother didn't know what to say.

"That's impossible." When she finally spoke, her voice was strained.

"Then wait for the investigator's report, and tell me that again."

I stubbed out my cigar and signaled the guard to show her out.

She wanted to say more, but the guard was already holding the door open.

With no choice but to leave, she stopped at the door and threw one last remark over her shoulder. "Fine. Then we'll see whether you're the one who's wrong or Colton really is as corrupt as you claim.

"The truth will come out!"

She huffed and left.

Only after she left did I turn and stare at the closed door.

My heart sank.

After my mother's visit, the crowd in the council room grew larger by the day.

It wasn't just Miami anymore. Guys from the family's other operations were showing up too.

The uproar had spread so widely that everyone feared being the next person denied a promotion.

Some people even started demanding that I be stripped of my say in family decisions.

They banded together and emailed Lorenzo a formal complaint.

But I'd always managed Lorenzo's email, so I was the first to read it.

Lorenzo saw him reach for his gun and drew first, aiming at Colton."Go ahead. Try it." Lorenzo's hand was shaking with rage."The only reason I'm not killing you is that I'm letting my wife deal with you."His words sent a rush of emotion through me.Colton broke down sobbing. "Alice! You can't do this! I sold you, but I didn't know if you were alive or dead. I still visited your memorial every year. I never missed a single year!"You can't just ignore that!""You did that for yourself, not for me." My voice was flat. With that, I stepped over to Lorenzo's side.Lorenzo had Beth seized too. She trembled violently as she begged me. "Sis, please, don't do this! I didn't mean it!"You know this family is all I have. He was behind everything!"It had nothing to do with me! I'm begging you, please don't."I watched her coldly, and she turned to my mother instead."Mom, tell her. I'm your daughter too. I've been by your side longer than she has. Save me!"Beth sobbed and shook all over, her

Colton was as rotten as ever.He kept insisting I'd set the whole thing up to frame him.The evidence was right in front of him, but he still refused to admit the truth. Lorenzo had run out of patience.I turned to Beth, who was trembling nearby.Beth took a step back. "Wh-what... what do you want?!""What do I want? My dear little sister, you don't think you're innocent in all this, do you?"My tone was light, but fear flashed across Beth's face."I had nothing to do with it! I didn't know, I swear I didn't know."I laughed and called in another witness, a sharply dressed woman named Claire Bennett. She walked up and looked around the room. The moment Beth saw her, she looked horrified.I said, "You can tell them now."She picked up the lace from the table and held it up. "I made this. That year, Mr. Russo brought Miss Beth in to have a gown made."They wanted a gown identical to Miss Alice's, but I don't normally duplicate a design. Miss Beth burst into tears in front of me. She said

Shocked murmurs rippled through the room, and no one dared say another word.Dante hung his head in shame. He didn't even try to explain himself.Colton rushed forward. "A few witnesses don't prove anything. And Alice's passport...""Stop making excuses." I smiled, but the look in my eyes was even colder. The past came flooding back, every moment of it crystal clear.Colton spun around to face me. "What does that prove?! A few people accuse me, and suddenly that means I did it?!"If that's what really happened, somebody would've figured it out back then!"Don, in all the years since Alice fell into the sea and disappeared, no one has grieved for her more than I have. I visit her memorial every year."Even before my wedding to Beth, I went to Alice's memorial first. And now the Donna has dragged these people in just to smear my name."I think she just doesn't want me in the inner circle. Fine. If that's how it is, I've got no reason to keep working for this family!"Colton was trying to

Every face in the room went pale at once.Every head turned toward the door as the guards led in a few maids. They looked to be in their 40s or 50s. Their expressions were calm as they stopped at the front of the room and lined up neatly.Colton's frown deepened. "This is your proof, Donna?""Yes. This is my proof."I gave a small laugh and stepped over to Lorenzo's side."These women worked at my birthday party back then. After you sold me, every staff member from that party was paid off and sent away."Nobody ever even looked into what really happened."I looked at my mother. She quickly averted her gaze."Tell them everything you saw that day. Leave nothing out."My voice was steady. The moment I finished, Lorenzo gently took my wrist. His palm was warm against my skin.It calmed me.One of the maids stepped forward, sweat beading on her forehead."More than ten years ago, we worked at Miss Alice's birthday party. Miss Alice got off the yacht with someone. I was carrying a tray of r

Colton looked down at the lace in his palm again. He flung it onto the table as if it had burned him. He'd gone deathly pale, and he kept backing away."It can't be!"I smiled and turned to my mother."Tell me, Mother. Do you see any resemblance between us?"My mother studied my eyes, my brows, and my build, even stepping closer for a better look. Her lips trembled. For a long time, she couldn't make a sound.Beth, on the other hand, backed away. She didn't dare come any closer.I looked around at all their faces and kept smiling. Then I glanced at a guard. He nodded and returned a moment later with an old woman named Mae Holloway. She couldn't meet anyone's eyes, and she looked terrified the moment she saw me.She suddenly dropped to her knees, her voice trembling. Then she stole a glance at Colton. She gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "You..."Lorenzo's expression darkened. "Talk. What's going on?"Mae's voice shook. "If I'm not mistaken, he's the one who sold the Donna to me all

The council room was packed. Everyone was waiting for the truth to come out.I took my time walking in.Beth was still in her wedding dress, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She clung to Colton's arm, her gaze fixed on my face. She kept staring until I turned and met her gaze. Then she looked away in a panic. In just three days, Colton looked worn out. Dark circles ringed his eyes, and all the confidence he'd had that first day was gone.He stood in the middle of the council room, still pleading his case. "Don, please believe me. I've worked for this family for years, and I've never taken a single cent from it."I've always worked hard running the docks in Miami."Lorenzo gave him a level look. "We'll know soon enough what kind of man you are. You don't need to keep shouting."Colton lowered his head and stepped aside.Dante looked at him, then turned to me. "Donna, everyone's here now, so I have to ask: what exactly makes you so sure Colton can't be trusted?"If you don't have a
