Chapter 5

Autor: Madam Fenghuo
The council room was packed. Everyone was waiting for the truth to come out.

I took my time walking in.

Beth was still in her wedding dress, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She clung to Colton's arm, her gaze fixed on my face.

She kept staring until I turned and met her gaze. Then she looked away in a panic.

In just three days, Colton looked worn out. Dark circles ringed his eyes, and all the confidence he'd had that first day was gone.

He stood in the middle of the council room, still pleading his case. "Don, please believe me. I've worked for this family for years, and I've never taken a single cent from it.

"I've always worked hard running the docks in Miami."

Lorenzo gave him a level look. "We'll know soon enough what kind of man you are. You don't need to keep shouting."

Colton lowered his head and stepped aside.

Dante looked at him, then turned to me. "Donna, everyone's here now, so I have to ask: what exactly makes you so sure Colton can't be trusted?

"If you don't have a reason, the guys aren't going to accept it."

Another member spoke up. "That's right.

"The Donna said he can't be trusted without giving us a single reason.

"This whole mess in the family is her fault. If the investigator doesn't turn up anything today, the Donna should apologize to Colton in front of everyone."

The room murmured its agreement.

Every eye in the room was on me.

Lorenzo cleared his throat, and the room fell silent.

Colton stepped forward and lowered his head. "Donna, I don't know what I did to make you come after me like this.

"But I don't want my personal situation to hurt anyone else in the family or cost them their chance to move up."

Beth was crying too. "He's right. Donna, please stop doing this to him.

"I'll be your servant if that's what you want. Just please let him go."

The people in the room felt even sorrier for them.

Furious, they pointed at me and accused me of treating Colton unfairly and tearing the couple apart.

I almost laughed. I looked Colton straight in the eye. "Lift your head."

Colton took a breath and slowly lifted his head. His gaze locked on mine. He hesitated for a beat, then his expression settled into studied calm.

"You don't recognize me?" I asked.

Colton studied me again. After a moment, he lowered his gaze. "Is this some kind of joke, Donna? I've always lived in Miami. I spend all my time at the docks or the clubs, nowhere else. How would I know you?"

He'd heard the rumors too. Nobody could figure out where I came from.

Colton would rather believe I really was some stray the doctor had picked up, someone who'd gotten into the family with a hidden agenda.

Anything but believe that Alice, the girl he'd sold, had made it back alive.

I looked at Beth. "What about you?"

Beth froze. Shock crossed her face as she stammered, "M-me neither. I hardly ever go out. I barely have any friends. I don't know you, Donna. Please don't joke about that."

By the time she finished, cold sweat had beaded on her forehead.

Then my mother stepped forward and squeezed Beth's hand. She turned to me. "Donna, we're here today to discuss Colton's promotion.

"I watched both of them grow up. They lead quiet lives. They don't go to shady places like that."

I let out a scornful laugh. My mother's story was the same as Colton's.

They dismissed the places where I'd been forced to live as sleazy.

And Colton was the one who'd put me there.

I didn't answer. Instead, I took the tattered scrap of lace out of my bag.

The moment I laid it on the table, my mother's expression changed. She went still, then stared at me in shock.

"You recognize it?" I asked.

"No. But that's my other daughter's name on it. What's going on?"

Beth's eyes went wide. She grabbed my mother's arm. "Th-that's... my sister's name."

Colton snatched the lace. His expression darkened as he studied it.

I spoke slowly. "The daughter you believe fell into the sea didn't die. She was lured off the yacht and sold to traffickers in Southeast Asia. Taken far from home, she was passed from hand to hand again and again and nearly died."

Every word drained more color from my mother's face.

"That's impossible!"

"I'm the girl who was sold. I'm Alice Greco."

Everyone in the room exchanged stunned looks.

Beth was so terrified that her knees buckled and she nearly fainted.

Colton's knuckles went white around the lace.

The blood drained from his face, and his hands began to shake.

I smiled. "I tore that lace from the gown I wore that day. You never thought I'd make it back alive, did you, Colton?

"Take another look. Recognize me yet?"

Lorenzo saw him reach for his gun and drew first, aiming at Colton."Go ahead. Try it." Lorenzo's hand was shaking with rage."The only reason I'm not killing you is that I'm letting my wife deal with you."His words sent a rush of emotion through me.Colton broke down sobbing. "Alice! You can't do this! I sold you, but I didn't know if you were alive or dead. I still visited your memorial every year. I never missed a single year!"You can't just ignore that!""You did that for yourself, not for me." My voice was flat. With that, I stepped over to Lorenzo's side.Lorenzo had Beth seized too. She trembled violently as she begged me. "Sis, please, don't do this! I didn't mean it!"You know this family is all I have. He was behind everything!"It had nothing to do with me! I'm begging you, please don't."I watched her coldly, and she turned to my mother instead."Mom, tell her. I'm your daughter too. I've been by your side longer than she has. Save me!"Beth sobbed and shook all over, her

Colton was as rotten as ever.He kept insisting I'd set the whole thing up to frame him.The evidence was right in front of him, but he still refused to admit the truth. Lorenzo had run out of patience.I turned to Beth, who was trembling nearby.Beth took a step back. "Wh-what... what do you want?!""What do I want? My dear little sister, you don't think you're innocent in all this, do you?"My tone was light, but fear flashed across Beth's face."I had nothing to do with it! I didn't know, I swear I didn't know."I laughed and called in another witness, a sharply dressed woman named Claire Bennett. She walked up and looked around the room. The moment Beth saw her, she looked horrified.I said, "You can tell them now."She picked up the lace from the table and held it up. "I made this. That year, Mr. Russo brought Miss Beth in to have a gown made."They wanted a gown identical to Miss Alice's, but I don't normally duplicate a design. Miss Beth burst into tears in front of me. She said

Shocked murmurs rippled through the room, and no one dared say another word.Dante hung his head in shame. He didn't even try to explain himself.Colton rushed forward. "A few witnesses don't prove anything. And Alice's passport...""Stop making excuses." I smiled, but the look in my eyes was even colder. The past came flooding back, every moment of it crystal clear.Colton spun around to face me. "What does that prove?! A few people accuse me, and suddenly that means I did it?!"If that's what really happened, somebody would've figured it out back then!"Don, in all the years since Alice fell into the sea and disappeared, no one has grieved for her more than I have. I visit her memorial every year."Even before my wedding to Beth, I went to Alice's memorial first. And now the Donna has dragged these people in just to smear my name."I think she just doesn't want me in the inner circle. Fine. If that's how it is, I've got no reason to keep working for this family!"Colton was trying to

Every face in the room went pale at once.Every head turned toward the door as the guards led in a few maids. They looked to be in their 40s or 50s. Their expressions were calm as they stopped at the front of the room and lined up neatly.Colton's frown deepened. "This is your proof, Donna?""Yes. This is my proof."I gave a small laugh and stepped over to Lorenzo's side."These women worked at my birthday party back then. After you sold me, every staff member from that party was paid off and sent away."Nobody ever even looked into what really happened."I looked at my mother. She quickly averted her gaze."Tell them everything you saw that day. Leave nothing out."My voice was steady. The moment I finished, Lorenzo gently took my wrist. His palm was warm against my skin.It calmed me.One of the maids stepped forward, sweat beading on her forehead."More than ten years ago, we worked at Miss Alice's birthday party. Miss Alice got off the yacht with someone. I was carrying a tray of r

Colton looked down at the lace in his palm again. He flung it onto the table as if it had burned him. He'd gone deathly pale, and he kept backing away."It can't be!"I smiled and turned to my mother."Tell me, Mother. Do you see any resemblance between us?"My mother studied my eyes, my brows, and my build, even stepping closer for a better look. Her lips trembled. For a long time, she couldn't make a sound.Beth, on the other hand, backed away. She didn't dare come any closer.I looked around at all their faces and kept smiling. Then I glanced at a guard. He nodded and returned a moment later with an old woman named Mae Holloway. She couldn't meet anyone's eyes, and she looked terrified the moment she saw me.She suddenly dropped to her knees, her voice trembling. Then she stole a glance at Colton. She gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "You..."Lorenzo's expression darkened. "Talk. What's going on?"Mae's voice shook. "If I'm not mistaken, he's the one who sold the Donna to me all
