Chapter 1

Author: Stars
I had come to Alaric's pack under a false name, running from the arranged mating my parents had set up.

No one knew who I really was. To them, I was nothing more than a rogue with no family and no name worth knowing.

Alaric, on the other hand, was the Alpha's son — born into privilege, raised like royalty, admired by everyone around him.

That was precisely why no one believed in us. The whole pack thought I was beneath him, that I was only with him to leech off his power and status.

Despite the pressure, Alaric chose me anyway.

But the constant hostility broke me down. The doctor said it was depression.

When Alaric pried open my locked bedroom door, clutching my diagnosis, he found me curled up in the corner, shaking.

He knelt beside me, took my hands in his, and looked at me with what I thought was sincerity. "Sophie, I don't care what anyone thinks. You're the only one I love. I'll give up my right to the Alpha title for you."

"Let's run away together. I'll take you somewhere it's just us. We'll build a life of our own."

I looked up into his steady eyes, and in that moment, he felt like the sun — burning away every shadow inside me.

I threw my arms around him and sobbed into his chest, nodding over and over.

But now I knew the truth. The rumors that had destroyed me, the ones that drove me into depression — Alaric had spread them himself.

All of it was calculated to push me out, to make room for Vivienne.

Watching him through the doorway, grinning and laughing with his friends like he'd pulled off something clever, I dug my nails into my own arms just to keep from screaming.

Another voice drifted out from the private room. "Alaric, what if Sophie finds out and gets angry?"

Alaric paused mid-drink and scoffed. "Even if she gets mad, she'll sulk for a day or two. Tell her what she wants to hear and she'll come running right back."

"Besides, Sophie's just a rogue wolf with no family. What's she going to do? Vivienne is different — I need her family's influence to take down my brother and claim the Alpha position."

The room went quiet. Everyone understood.

The old Alpha had recently announced his retirement. The next Alpha would be chosen between Alaric and his older brother.

It was supposed to be a fair contest, but the outcome had been decided long ago — in talent and ability, Alaric was nowhere near his brother's level.

He was destined to lose.

That was why he needed Vivienne's family connections to overthrow his brother and seize the position.

And the biggest obstacle in his plan was me. That was why Alaric had schemed so carefully to drive me away — to clear the path for Vivienne.

Someone teased him. "What if she actually gives up on you and falls for another wolf? You'll be the one crying then."

Alaric didn't hesitate. "Impossible. She's so in love with me she'd never leave my side if I let her. I couldn't shake her off if I tried."

"You've really got her wrapped around your finger, Alaric. Though honestly, Sophie's gorgeous but cold as ice — nothing like Vivienne. Vivienne, though — she's warm, she's sweet."

The room erupted in laughter that crashed over me like a wave. Alaric basked in it, soaking up every word of flattery.

My breathing turned ragged. I couldn't get enough air.

I couldn't listen to another second. I turned and ran out of that suffocating bar.

My best friend called, fuming. "Good thing you got out when you did. You have no idea how out of control Alaric and Vivienne have gotten."She sent me a string of screenshots — posts Alaric had made online. Since I had blocked him long ago, I'd had no idea. Most of the posts were him showing off his nightlife. But the majority featured Vivienne. One was a selfie of the two of them tangled together the morning after, captioned: "You changed on me, and the pain drove me to look for your shadow in someone else. Remember — you made me this way."He never said my name outright, but everyone who knew us understood exactly who he meant.Another photo showed Vivienne in my old room, wearing my pajamas, with Alaric holding her from behind. The caption read: "This still smells like you. But everything's changed now. I wonder if that other man will ever see you the way I did."Post after post, all painting the same picture: that I had cheated first, that he was just a brokenhearted man seeking co

So when I saw that familiar face again, I froze for a beat.Alaric forced a strained smile. "Sophie — what are you doing here? Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you?"I wasn't interested in his act. I got straight to the point. "You know who I am now, don't you? So tell me — did you come looking for Sophie? Or for the tool that can hand you the Alpha title?"His smile froze on his face. But he recovered quickly, shameless

My parents had already announced the alliance to the press. Two great packs uniting through marriage was major news among the packs. Dozens of reporters had been waiting at the airport. When Alaric saw the photos and realized it was me, the shock left him frozen for a long time.He tried calling, only to find I had blocked him. Desperate, he borrowed a friend's phone."Sophie, who the hell are you? Why would you —"Dorian's voice cut across before he could finish. "Sophie, there's a banquet tonight. Let me take you home to rest first."Not too loud, not too soft — just enough for Alaric to hear on the other end."Sophie, where are you right now?" Alaric demanded.I had no patience for this. "That's none of your business. Whatever we had is over, Alaric. Stop contacting me."I hung up, blocked the number, and deleted it.I let out a breath and turned to Dorian, a little embarrassed. "Sorry about that. Some personal matters I hadn't finished dealing with."Dorian just smiled. "That's alr

Over the next few days, I packed my things. At some point, the bedroom door opened behind me. Alaric wrapped his arms around me from behind and whispered, "I shouldn't have snapped at you last time. Just let me finish up some work, and then I'll file my own paperwork to leave the pack.""Don't worry. I'd never abandon you."His voice was soft, but someone else's perfume was all over his clothes, and it made my stomach turn.I pulled free from his grip and brushed off my sleeve, like I'd touched something filthy.Alaric's jaw tightened.I placed the last piece of clothing into my suitcase and looked around the room — the house I had lived in for five years. Every corner held a memory of us.Against my better judgment, I gave him one last chance. "Becoming Alpha is every male wolf's dream. Would you really give that up for me?"Something flickered across Alaric's face. He was quiet for a long time before he spoke. "The truth is, I —"His phone rang before he could finish.
