Chapter 1

Covering my nose and mouth with the back of my hand, I felt my way along the scorching wall, inching toward the exit one step at a time.

The moment I made it out of the fire, my legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the grass in the emergency triage area.

Nearby, a paramedic shouted through the megaphone, "I need the bride's family to come over here! She needs oxygen and immediate medical evaluation!"

I lifted my head, my gaze landing on Tyler Sloan. He had been looking in my direction, but at the sound of the paramedic's voice, he immediately turned and headed over.

"I'm her husband. How is she?"

Dragging my bleeding leg behind me, I made my way toward them.

Hearing the sound, Tyler turned. The moment he saw the state I was in, he hurried toward me.

"How did you manage to get yourself into such a sorry state?" He was frowning, his voice low and reproachful. "Didn't you learn first aid? How could you be so careless about protecting yourself?"

I stared into his seemingly affectionate eyes, yet all I felt was a chill spreading through my body. "Tyler, I was hit by a collapsing screen. I almost died in there."

Tyler's hand paused on my cheek mid-wipe.

Before he could say anything, Jennifer Koch, who was lying on the emergency stretcher, reached out and caught the hem of my blouse.

"Cassie, don't be mad at Tyler! When the fire broke out, I deliberately held onto him and cried so he wouldn't go looking for you."

I froze.

"You two are getting married tomorrow. I just wanted to give him one last test for your sake! See? He took such good care of me, the bridesmaid. That means he'll definitely be even more responsible toward you in the future."

I looked at Jennifer, who'd been my dear friend for many years, and felt sick to my stomach.

"You were testing him for me?" My nails dug deep into my palms. "So when I see my fiance carrying my best friend out of a burning building, I'm supposed to feel grateful?"

"Cassie!" Tyler's voice grew stern. "You're usually so rational. Why are you acting like an insecure teenager, nitpicking everything?"

Oh. So all the concern and the blatant soft spot he had for Jennifer could be neatly wrapped up as something he did for my sake.

Tyler glanced at his watch, his brows drawing together even more tightly.

"I need to follow Jenny to Mercy Hospital for a full-body examination and psychological counseling first. She was terrified. I won't feel at ease unless I stay with her."

He pulled a credit card from his pocket and held it out to me.

"Behave yourself and stop being childish. Take a cab to a nearby private clinic and get your wounds treated. The PIN is Jenny's birthday."

I stared at the card without taking it.

He reached out, pressed it into my hand, and added, "I set that PIN because you were always telling me that if I loved you, I should extend that love to the people you cared about and treat Jenny like my own sister. Don't tell me you're going to kick up a fuss over it when I'm only doing exactly what you asked."

With that, Tyler didn't spare me another glance. He strode toward the ambulance and held onto Jennifer protectively as he helped her inside.

The ambulance sped away with its siren wailing. I was still standing in place when my phone screen suddenly lit up with the sound I had set for priority notifications.

Jennifer had just posted a new update on her social media. It was a photo of Tyler's large hand tightly wrapped around hers under the dim lights inside the ambulance.

"My friend said that a man who's willing to treat me like his own sister is a man worth entrusting her life to. Being the one someone chooses without hesitation is the greatest source of security a woman can have. He has passed the test with flying colors!"

Tyler's profile picture was conspicuously at the very front of the list of people who had liked the post. The man who never bothered to check his social media feed had liked the post instantly.

I took out my phone and called Olivia Hudson, the wedding planner.

"Hey, Ms. Nolan. The wedding venue is all set for tomorrow's ceremony. I guarantee you'll be satisfied!"

My lips curled. "Cancel the ceremony, Ms. Hudson."

Basking in the sunny weather of Paverie, I sat at an outdoor table at a cafe. The paint on my canvas had just dried.Just then, my phone buzzed. Leanna Fisher, my friend back home, sent me a video."Cassie, look! What goes around comes around. Those two scumbags have turned on each other!"I tapped on the video and saw that it was taken inside Tyler's office. He sat behind his desk with a frighteningly stormy look on his face.Jennifer stood across from him, her makeup streaked from tears. "Tyler, why did you cancel my credit cards? Why did you take the house back?"Snorting, Tyler grabbed the ashtray from his desk and smashed it onto the floor."You have the nerve to ask why? Would I have dismissed Cassie's reaction as a temper tantrum if you hadn't fanned the flames and misled me? You deliberately stopped me from saving her, and you insisted on wearing that wedding gown!"You ruined my wedding and my reputation, Jennifer. Do you expect me to continue bankrolling your lifestyle

Sitting in a cafe at the airport, I checked the flight information for Paverie. It had been half a month since I left the country, and during that time, Tyler searched everywhere for me.When he couldn't get through to me, he tried calling me with other people's numbers. My email inbox was filled with his letters of remorse, but I ignored them all."Cassie," a hoarse voice called out behind me.My hand froze around the coffee mug as I turned my head.Tyler stood behind me, his face unshaven and his eyes bloodshot. His expensive bespoke suit was covered in wrinkles. His eyes reddened when he saw me. He staggered toward me, reaching for my hand. I coldly pulled away and got up. "What brings you here, Mr. Sloan?"Tyler froze at the formal address I used. "Don't call me that, Cassie."His knees buckled, and he dropped to the floor in front of me. The passing travelers started looking our way.Clutching the hem of my blouse tightly, Tyler professed, "I know I messed up, Cassie. I ne

By the time the plane landed in Lampton, more than a dozen hours had passed. The moment I turned on my phone, a flood of notifications poured in.The spectacle at the hotel had gone viral all across social media back home. After skimming through the trending topics, I clicked on a video Olivia sent to me.In the footage, Tyler stood on the stage in the hotel ballroom. His face was ashen, his hand clutching the crumpled wedding cancellation confirmation.Jennifer stood beside him in her wedding gown, her makeup ruined from her tears. "How could she be so selfish and leave you here all alone?"She was still trying to pin the blame on me.The guests were also murmuring among themselves.Tyler took a deep breath and picked up the microphone. "Everyone, there's been a slight mishap with today's wedding."He was trying to maintain his dignity and composure. "Cassie isn't feeling well, so the wedding has been postponed."The moment those words left his mouth, the LED screen above the

Sitting in a window seat on the plane, I connected my phone to the in-flight Wi-Fi. The alumni group chat for my old university was already blowing up. Someone had started a livestream from the wedding venue. On the screen, Tyler sat in the back seat of the wedding car, his head lowered as he stared at his phone. The livestream was being hosted by an old classmate sitting in the passenger seat, with the camera pointed directly at him."Tyler, is Cassidy still not answering your calls?" the classmate asked.Tyler said nothing.I deduced he was looking through our chat history. In the past, I'd been the one constantly waiting to hear back from him. His replies were always curt."I'm busy.""I don't have time for that.""Eat without me."Now that I'd disappeared completely, it finally hit him that something was amiss. He started typing away on his phone, only to delete what he wrote. Instead, he sent a voice message.I tapped on the audio-to-text function."Enough, Cassie. I onl

I sat on a couch in the VIP lounge at the airport. The hearing aid in my right ear emitted a faint electronic hum. Displayed on my phone screen was the feed from the security camera outside my apartment.Tyler stood on the doorstep wearing the suit I had personally picked out for him, with a bouquet of red roses in his hands. He tapped away on the keypad lock, only to hear a mechanical beep signifying that the password was incorrect. The sound echoed through the hallway.Brows creased, he glanced at the rest of the wedding party behind him. He took a deep breath and entered the password again.Once again, it was incorrect. His smile vanished, replaced by a look of irritation and impatience.Jennifer, dressed in a bridesmaid's gown, scooted to his side. "Tyler, is Cassie still angry about yesterday? I know I'm at fault for what happened yesterday, but how could she joke about something as serious as your wedding?"Tyler pounded the door a few times before sighing. "Open up, Cassid

When I woke up in a hospital room, it was already completely dark outside. The world seemed to have been cut in half, the silence on one side reminding me of everything that had happened just hours ago.Beside the hospital bed, Tyler's eyes flickered a little when he saw mine open."The doctor said the loss of hearing is just temporary." He wiped away the bit of dampness from the corner of my eye. "Don't be scared. I've already contacted one of the best ear specialists abroad. You just need some time to recover. You'll be fine."I stared into his dark eyes, the situation becoming all the more ludicrous to me. Somehow, he'd repackaged the irreversible hearing damage I'd received because of him as temporary hearing loss."Tyler Sloan."I forcefully turned my head away, breaking free of his fingers. My chest ached from the hurricane of emotions brewing inside me."Do you remember that storm two years ago?"Tyler's hand fell away, his gaze darkening."You're about to become my wife
