Chapter 2

Author: Celebrate Life
I ended up going to Mercy Hospital after all. The burn on my right leg had already been bandaged, but the burning pain in my throat was growing more intense by the minute.

"Ms. Nolan, you have sustained moderate burns to your airway. We need to admit you immediately for treatment."

The doctor handed me a pen.

"We usually don't allow patients to sign the waiver themselves, as it involves assuming responsibility for any subsequent risks. It's best if you can ask a family member to come over and sign it for you."

My fingers trembled uncontrollably. "Can't I just sign it myself?"

The doctor shook his head solemnly.

I got my phone out and pulled up Tyler's number. However, before I could call him, hurried footsteps sounded from the hallway.

"Cassie! Why is your leg all wrapped up like that?"

Jennifer came running, panting for breath. With trembling hands, she pulled an exquisite box from her pocket and pressed it into my hands.

"Cassie, I know you're upset about what happened at the fire, but Tyler only saved me first because he was afraid my asthma would act up…"

She hurriedly opened the box. Inside it was the diamond necklace Tyler had ordered six months ago.

"He specifically asked me to bring this to appease you. He said you'd probably still be angry."

I stared at the glittering necklace, finding the whole situation ridiculous.

"If he doesn't want to come and talk to me himself, you don't need to put on this act for him," I said.

"It's not an act!"

Tyler strode toward us. The moment he saw how pale I was, a hint of concern flashed across his eyes.

"How did you manage to get yourself into such a state? Didn't I tell you to just get it bandaged at a nearby clinic?"

That gentle tenderness in his eyes had once been something I took pride in. I thought it was something reserved exclusively for me. Now, it only made my stomach churn.

"The doctor said I have moderate burns to my airway and need a family member to sign my waiver."

I avoided his touch and pushed the form toward him. "Sign it."

Sighing, Tyler took the pen. "Oh, fine. I'll sign it. You shouldn't do this to yourself anymore. It breaks my heart too, you know?"

He was just about to put pen to paper when Jennifer suddenly broke into a violent coughing fit, her whole body swaying unsteadily.

"Tyler… I-I can't breathe…"

Almost instinctively, Tyler turned and pulled Jennifer into his arms.

"Jenny? Did inhaling all that smoke trigger your asthma again? Where's your medicine? Take deep breaths. Look at me. Don't be scared!"

I silently watched his frantic display before reminding him, "Tyler, sign the form first."

Tyler turned toward me. "Cassie, your airway burns don't count as an emergency. Jenny's asthma can't wait. It could be life-threatening."

So in his eyes, even though my life was hanging in the balance, too, I was just being jealous and difficult on purpose. Only my willingness to give in and make no demands of him could prove that I was a reasonable person.

Leaning against Tyler, Jennifer looked at me with reddened eyes. In between labored breaths, she said, "Cassie… I-I'll find a doctor myself… I won't get in the way of you two…"

"Don't move!" Tyler immediately tightened his arms around her. Then he looked up at me, his gaze now turning cold. "Cassidy Nolan, enough is enough!"

He scooped Jennifer up and rushed toward the other end of the emergency room. The diamond necklace fell to the floor and shattered into pieces.

I looked at the form, now stained with ink, and crumpled it into a ball.

"Get me another waiver to sign, doctor. I can't get in touch with any family members, so I'll just be responsible for my own life."

Basking in the sunny weather of Paverie, I sat at an outdoor table at a cafe. The paint on my canvas had just dried.Just then, my phone buzzed. Leanna Fisher, my friend back home, sent me a video."Cassie, look! What goes around comes around. Those two scumbags have turned on each other!"I tapped on the video and saw that it was taken inside Tyler's office. He sat behind his desk with a frighteningly stormy look on his face.Jennifer stood across from him, her makeup streaked from tears. "Tyler, why did you cancel my credit cards? Why did you take the house back?"Snorting, Tyler grabbed the ashtray from his desk and smashed it onto the floor."You have the nerve to ask why? Would I have dismissed Cassie's reaction as a temper tantrum if you hadn't fanned the flames and misled me? You deliberately stopped me from saving her, and you insisted on wearing that wedding gown!"You ruined my wedding and my reputation, Jennifer. Do you expect me to continue bankrolling your lifestyle

Sitting in a cafe at the airport, I checked the flight information for Paverie. It had been half a month since I left the country, and during that time, Tyler searched everywhere for me.When he couldn't get through to me, he tried calling me with other people's numbers. My email inbox was filled with his letters of remorse, but I ignored them all."Cassie," a hoarse voice called out behind me.My hand froze around the coffee mug as I turned my head.Tyler stood behind me, his face unshaven and his eyes bloodshot. His expensive bespoke suit was covered in wrinkles. His eyes reddened when he saw me. He staggered toward me, reaching for my hand. I coldly pulled away and got up. "What brings you here, Mr. Sloan?"Tyler froze at the formal address I used. "Don't call me that, Cassie."His knees buckled, and he dropped to the floor in front of me. The passing travelers started looking our way.Clutching the hem of my blouse tightly, Tyler professed, "I know I messed up, Cassie. I ne

By the time the plane landed in Lampton, more than a dozen hours had passed. The moment I turned on my phone, a flood of notifications poured in.The spectacle at the hotel had gone viral all across social media back home. After skimming through the trending topics, I clicked on a video Olivia sent to me.In the footage, Tyler stood on the stage in the hotel ballroom. His face was ashen, his hand clutching the crumpled wedding cancellation confirmation.Jennifer stood beside him in her wedding gown, her makeup ruined from her tears. "How could she be so selfish and leave you here all alone?"She was still trying to pin the blame on me.The guests were also murmuring among themselves.Tyler took a deep breath and picked up the microphone. "Everyone, there's been a slight mishap with today's wedding."He was trying to maintain his dignity and composure. "Cassie isn't feeling well, so the wedding has been postponed."The moment those words left his mouth, the LED screen above the

Sitting in a window seat on the plane, I connected my phone to the in-flight Wi-Fi. The alumni group chat for my old university was already blowing up. Someone had started a livestream from the wedding venue. On the screen, Tyler sat in the back seat of the wedding car, his head lowered as he stared at his phone. The livestream was being hosted by an old classmate sitting in the passenger seat, with the camera pointed directly at him."Tyler, is Cassidy still not answering your calls?" the classmate asked.Tyler said nothing.I deduced he was looking through our chat history. In the past, I'd been the one constantly waiting to hear back from him. His replies were always curt."I'm busy.""I don't have time for that.""Eat without me."Now that I'd disappeared completely, it finally hit him that something was amiss. He started typing away on his phone, only to delete what he wrote. Instead, he sent a voice message.I tapped on the audio-to-text function."Enough, Cassie. I onl

I sat on a couch in the VIP lounge at the airport. The hearing aid in my right ear emitted a faint electronic hum. Displayed on my phone screen was the feed from the security camera outside my apartment.Tyler stood on the doorstep wearing the suit I had personally picked out for him, with a bouquet of red roses in his hands. He tapped away on the keypad lock, only to hear a mechanical beep signifying that the password was incorrect. The sound echoed through the hallway.Brows creased, he glanced at the rest of the wedding party behind him. He took a deep breath and entered the password again.Once again, it was incorrect. His smile vanished, replaced by a look of irritation and impatience.Jennifer, dressed in a bridesmaid's gown, scooted to his side. "Tyler, is Cassie still angry about yesterday? I know I'm at fault for what happened yesterday, but how could she joke about something as serious as your wedding?"Tyler pounded the door a few times before sighing. "Open up, Cassid

When I woke up in a hospital room, it was already completely dark outside. The world seemed to have been cut in half, the silence on one side reminding me of everything that had happened just hours ago.Beside the hospital bed, Tyler's eyes flickered a little when he saw mine open."The doctor said the loss of hearing is just temporary." He wiped away the bit of dampness from the corner of my eye. "Don't be scared. I've already contacted one of the best ear specialists abroad. You just need some time to recover. You'll be fine."I stared into his dark eyes, the situation becoming all the more ludicrous to me. Somehow, he'd repackaged the irreversible hearing damage I'd received because of him as temporary hearing loss."Tyler Sloan."I forcefully turned my head away, breaking free of his fingers. My chest ached from the hurricane of emotions brewing inside me."Do you remember that storm two years ago?"Tyler's hand fell away, his gaze darkening."You're about to become my wife
