Chapter 3

Author: Lucky Kitty
I went straight to the bridal store.

When I arrived, Benjamin stood in front of the mirror in the so-called backup suit. Natalie sat on the couch with her phone in hand, but her eyes remained fixed on him.

Benjamin turned around and asked with a grin, "Hey, how do I look?"

Natalie scoffed. "You look terrible."

But I clearly saw her lower her head and open the camera on her phone. When Benjamin turned away, she secretly snapped a picture. Then she quickly flipped her phone face down in her palm as if nothing had happened.

That small gesture hurt more than any compliment could have. My throat felt clogged with wet cotton, so tight and bitter that I couldn't speak.

So she did secretly save someone's best moments. Just not mine.

The day I tried on my wedding suit, Natalie had said something had come up at work and told me to decide for myself. I had sent her pictures, and three hours later, all she had replied was: [Not bad.]

Now Benjamin had merely tried on a suit, and she could sit here, complain about how terrible he looked, and secretly take pictures of him.

Benjamin tugged at the hem of the suit and said casually, "I probably won't ever get the chance to wear a proper suit in my life. Might as well take advantage of Logan's wedding and dress up a little."

Natalie frowned. "Don't say that."

Benjamin raised an eyebrow. "What, afraid your hubby will get jealous? Fine, fine. I'll take it off so he doesn't get upset again."

I turned to the staff. "This is my wedding. Why is there a backup suit in someone else's size?"

Benjamin finally noticed me.

Surprise flashed across his face before he quickly took a couple of steps toward me. "Logan, that's really not what I meant. I was just helping you see how it looked on camera. Don't get the wrong idea."

Impatience crept into Natalie's voice. "He's a groomsman. He's supposed to be part of the interactive portion of the reception. What's wrong with having him try it on?"

I was about to respond when a sharp crash came from the display area beside us. A clothing rack toppled over and crashed toward Benjamin and me.

Natalie didn't hesitate. She rushed forward, pulled Benjamin into her arms, and shielded him as she backed away.

The metal rack slammed into my shoulder and sliced my arm open. The pain hit a moment later, and blood trickled down my wrist.

Benjamin let out a frightened cry and trembled in Natalie's arms. Yet even then, he tried to push her away.

"Why are you worrying about me? Your hubby is over there. I'm really fine. I've been falling and getting hurt since I was a kid. Go check on him."

But his hand remained tightly clenched around Natalie's sleeve. He didn't let go.

Natalie lowered her head and checked him for injuries, her voice tense with concern. "Did you get hurt? Are you scared?"

I stood there and clutched my injured arm, suddenly unable to say a word.

Just then, Hannah and Kayden rushed over.

The moment Kayden saw Benjamin, he frowned at me. "What's wrong with you again, Logan?"

Hannah's expression darkened too. "Benjamin was just helping try on a suit, and you still had to make a big deal out of it. No wonder nobody likes you."

Kayden helped Benjamin to his feet, clicked his tongue, and added impatiently, "Can't you be more like Benjamin? He doesn't fight over anything. He can joke about anything. That's why everyone wants to be around him.

"You walk around with that miserable look on your face all day, like the whole world owes you something."

Natalie finally looked at me. Her gaze lingered on my bleeding arm for barely a second before she said, "Logan, you've really gone too far today."

I looked at all of them. Humiliation and hurt weighed on my chest until I could barely breathe. But I refused to cry in front of them anymore.

I lowered my head and slipped off my engagement ring. The numbers engraved inside the band, Benjamin's birthday, felt cold beneath my fingertips.

I placed the ring on the table in front of Natalie. "Natalie, we're breaking up."

The shop instantly fell silent. Natalie's expression changed.

I pressed a hand against my wound and said softly, "There won't be a wedding tomorrow either."

Natalie's face darkened completely. "Logan, think this through. The invitations have already gone out, and our family and friends are already here. You're saying we should cancel now? Do you want everyone to laugh at us?"

I didn't respond.

Benjamin let out a quiet gasp and said he felt dizzy. Natalie immediately looked down at him before turning back to me with a cold expression. "You need to calm down. I'm taking him to the hospital."

With that, she helped Benjamin out of the store. Hannah, Kayden, and Veronica hurried after them. Soon, I was the only one left.

Only then did an employee quietly approach me. "Mr. Wilson, Miss Cole already paid the rush fee last night. She said that if you didn't show up tomorrow, the wedding would continue with Mr. Henderson in his backup suit for the reception activities. She didn't want your spot to be left empty."

I simply stood there after hearing that. I even forgot to say thank you.

That answer filled in every blank and settled every question I'd had. Benjamin hadn't been dragged into this as some last-minute joke. He had had his own place in my wedding all along.

As winter drew to a close, Natalie came to see me one more time.I'd just returned from a client's wedding that day, still holding a bouquet of lilies of the valley that had been left over. She was standing outside the studio and looked much thinner than before. When she saw the flowers in my hands, she froze for a moment. "You once told me you wanted lilies of the valley for the wedding."I didn't answer. She said quietly, "I only found out later that you're allergic to roses."I looked at her and suddenly found the statement almost laughable. She hadn't found out later. She had known all along. She had just forgotten.Natalie took a thick envelope from her bag. "I put everything together. I'll reimburse you for all the wedding expenses. And I've already transferred the house into your name."I didn't take it. "Natalie, I don't want any of it."Her hand stopped in midair, and the light slowly faded from her eyes. "Not even the house?""No."That house contained her wedding

Later, I moved to a new place and changed my phone number.A college classmate who worked at the studio helped me land a few wedding-planning jobs. Ironically, I was now the one helping other people get married. The first time I saw a groom trying on a suit, I felt strangely dazed. His girlfriend stood on tiptoe and carefully adjusted his bow tie. He smiled at her and asked, "Does it look good?"She looked up at him, her eyes bright. "Very good."It was such an ordinary exchange, yet as I stood beside them, my eyes suddenly grew hot.So this was what it felt like to be truly loved. You didn't have to keep asking for reassurance.Natalie came looking for me many times. She went to my old apartment, the bridal shop, and the restaurant I used to frequent.Kayden sent me a message.Kayden: [Bro, Natalie isn't doing well right now. Benjamin isn't doing well either. Our relatives found out that he and Natalie got married, and everyone's been talking about him.]I read the message w

I eventually went downstairs. It wasn't because I'd forgiven her. I just thought there were some things that needed to be said clearly. When Natalie saw me, her eyes lit up. She took two steps forward, then stopped as if she were afraid of startling me. "Logan."I stood on the steps and made no move toward her.Her gaze fell to the bandage on my arm, and her throat bobbed. "Does it still hurt?"I looked at her. If she'd asked me that a few days ago, I might have cried. But now, all I could think about was how late the question had come."It's been taken care of."A trace of embarrassment crossed her face. "I was wrong about what happened at the bridal store. At the time, I thought Benjamin was more seriously hurt."I interrupted her softly, "You didn't think. You just noticed him first."Her lips parted, but no words came out.A cool breeze swept down the street.I remembered that night at the bar, when she'd draped her jacket over Benjamin's shoulders without even turning to

I went to South Hampshire. A college classmate of mine ran a small studio there. When he heard I'd called off the wedding, he asked only one question. "Do you need a place to stay for a few days?"I said, "Maybe longer."He didn't ask anything else. He simply placed a spare key in my hand.…When the nurse changed the dressing on my arm, she asked how I'd gotten hurt. I told her a wedding dress rack had fallen on me.She smiled. "Getting hurt right before your wedding? That's a pretty bad omen."I lowered my head and stared at the bandage without answering. Bad omen or not, at least it reminded me that the wedding shouldn't have gone ahead.…Three days after I settled in South Hampshire, Benjamin called me.I didn't want to answer at first, but he'd changed his number. The moment he spoke, he used that same familiar tone. "Logan."I said nothing. After a brief pause, he spoke softly. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not calling to brag. The wedding didn't happen in the end,

At noon, it was time for the wedding to begin. I sat in my hotel room and opened Kayden's social media feed. He'd posted a video from the venue. In it, the emcee stood onstage with an awkward smile. The screen behind him read: [Natalie Cole and Benjamin Henderson's Wedding].The guests below whispered among themselves.Someone asked, "Wasn't the groom's last name Wilson?"Someone else laughed. "Young people really come up with all kinds of things these days. They got married last night, and now they're having the wedding today?"The camera shook before settling on Benjamin. He wore the white backup suit and stood near the side entrance with red-rimmed eyes, looking as though he'd been deeply wronged.Natalie stood beside him with a grim expression. Benjamin lowered his head and gently tugged at her sleeve.I couldn't make out what he was saying in the video, but I could almost guess. He was probably saying, "I'm fine. Go find Logan. Don't let me ruin the wedding."But the whit

I slept lightly. Less than two hours later, the hotel phone on the nightstand rang and woke me.The front desk said someone was waiting for me downstairs. My heart sank. I thought it was Natalie. But when I went downstairs, I found my mother waiting for me. She was already dressed for the wedding, and her makeup was slightly smudged. The moment she saw me, her eyes reddened. "Logan, you really stayed at a hotel?"I said nothing. She noticed the bandage on my arm and froze for a moment, then quickly looked away. "Don't worry about that right now. Come with me."I looked at her. "Where are we going?""To the wedding, of course." She was so anxious that her voice rose. "All the relatives are there. Your dad is holding everything together. Your sister said you're throwing a tantrum, and everyone's waiting for you. If you go back now, there's still time."I asked, "Isn't Benjamin already the groom?"My mother's face stiffened. "You only said that because you were angry. Who would a
