Chapter 6

Author: Lucky Kitty
I slept lightly. Less than two hours later, the hotel phone on the nightstand rang and woke me.

The front desk said someone was waiting for me downstairs. My heart sank. I thought it was Natalie.

But when I went downstairs, I found my mother waiting for me. She was already dressed for the wedding, and her makeup was slightly smudged.

The moment she saw me, her eyes reddened. "Logan, you really stayed at a hotel?"

I said nothing.

She noticed the bandage on my arm and froze for a moment, then

As winter drew to a close, Natalie came to see me one more time.I'd just returned from a client's wedding that day, still holding a bouquet of lilies of the valley that had been left over. She was standing outside the studio and looked much thinner than before. When she saw the flowers in my hands, she froze for a moment. "You once told me you wanted lilies of the valley for the wedding."I didn't answer. She said quietly, "I only found out later that you're allergic to roses."I looked at her and suddenly found the statement almost laughable. She hadn't found out later. She had known all along. She had just forgotten.Natalie took a thick envelope from her bag. "I put everything together. I'll reimburse you for all the wedding expenses. And I've already transferred the house into your name."I didn't take it. "Natalie, I don't want any of it."Her hand stopped in midair, and the light slowly faded from her eyes. "Not even the house?""No."That house contained her wedding

Later, I moved to a new place and changed my phone number.A college classmate who worked at the studio helped me land a few wedding-planning jobs. Ironically, I was now the one helping other people get married. The first time I saw a groom trying on a suit, I felt strangely dazed. His girlfriend stood on tiptoe and carefully adjusted his bow tie. He smiled at her and asked, "Does it look good?"She looked up at him, her eyes bright. "Very good."It was such an ordinary exchange, yet as I stood beside them, my eyes suddenly grew hot.So this was what it felt like to be truly loved. You didn't have to keep asking for reassurance.Natalie came looking for me many times. She went to my old apartment, the bridal shop, and the restaurant I used to frequent.Kayden sent me a message.Kayden: [Bro, Natalie isn't doing well right now. Benjamin isn't doing well either. Our relatives found out that he and Natalie got married, and everyone's been talking about him.]I read the message w

I eventually went downstairs. It wasn't because I'd forgiven her. I just thought there were some things that needed to be said clearly. When Natalie saw me, her eyes lit up. She took two steps forward, then stopped as if she were afraid of startling me. "Logan."I stood on the steps and made no move toward her.Her gaze fell to the bandage on my arm, and her throat bobbed. "Does it still hurt?"I looked at her. If she'd asked me that a few days ago, I might have cried. But now, all I could think about was how late the question had come."It's been taken care of."A trace of embarrassment crossed her face. "I was wrong about what happened at the bridal store. At the time, I thought Benjamin was more seriously hurt."I interrupted her softly, "You didn't think. You just noticed him first."Her lips parted, but no words came out.A cool breeze swept down the street.I remembered that night at the bar, when she'd draped her jacket over Benjamin's shoulders without even turning to

I went to South Hampshire. A college classmate of mine ran a small studio there. When he heard I'd called off the wedding, he asked only one question. "Do you need a place to stay for a few days?"I said, "Maybe longer."He didn't ask anything else. He simply placed a spare key in my hand.…When the nurse changed the dressing on my arm, she asked how I'd gotten hurt. I told her a wedding dress rack had fallen on me.She smiled. "Getting hurt right before your wedding? That's a pretty bad omen."I lowered my head and stared at the bandage without answering. Bad omen or not, at least it reminded me that the wedding shouldn't have gone ahead.…Three days after I settled in South Hampshire, Benjamin called me.I didn't want to answer at first, but he'd changed his number. The moment he spoke, he used that same familiar tone. "Logan."I said nothing. After a brief pause, he spoke softly. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not calling to brag. The wedding didn't happen in the end,

At noon, it was time for the wedding to begin. I sat in my hotel room and opened Kayden's social media feed. He'd posted a video from the venue. In it, the emcee stood onstage with an awkward smile. The screen behind him read: [Natalie Cole and Benjamin Henderson's Wedding].The guests below whispered among themselves.Someone asked, "Wasn't the groom's last name Wilson?"Someone else laughed. "Young people really come up with all kinds of things these days. They got married last night, and now they're having the wedding today?"The camera shook before settling on Benjamin. He wore the white backup suit and stood near the side entrance with red-rimmed eyes, looking as though he'd been deeply wronged.Natalie stood beside him with a grim expression. Benjamin lowered his head and gently tugged at her sleeve.I couldn't make out what he was saying in the video, but I could almost guess. He was probably saying, "I'm fine. Go find Logan. Don't let me ruin the wedding."But the whit

Come with me."I looked at her. "Where are we going?""To the wedding, of course." She was so anxious that her voice rose. "All the relatives are there. Your dad is holding everything together. Your sister said you're throwing a tantrum, and everyone's waiting for you. If you go back now, there's still time."I asked, "Isn't Benjamin already the groom?"My mother's face stiffened. "You only said that because you were angry. Who would a
