Chapter 2

Author: Rohes
The moment I got off the plane, the familiar scent made me feel incredibly at ease. The resentment I had built up seemed to vanish with the breeze of my hometown.

As I looked at the familiar streets, my eyes began to well up. It felt good to be back home.

I took a cab to the old house Mom had left behind. No one had lived there for a long time, but the interior was still exactly the same as when she was alive. With neither my parents nor I living there, the place felt quiet and empty.

I had once brought Josephine here because I wanted her to see where I grew up, but she complained it was too worn down and deserted, refusing to stay long. Even so, I still felt more of a sense of belonging here than in Dad's new house.

After Mom passed away, Dad brought my stepmom, Madeline Brooks, and my stepbrother, Daniel, back home. Not long after, Dad and Madeline had a daughter.

From then on, the small family I had with Dad turned into a family of five. He was no longer just my dad, and his home was no longer mine alone.

My thoughts slowly drifted back to the present. I tucked away the photo album filled with family pictures and stood up to go outside for some fresh air.

Just then, a familiar voice called out to me from behind. "Nicholas? Is that you, Nicholas?"

I turned around and saw Ms. Chase, Mom's closest neighbor.

"Ms. Chase! Long time no see," I said.

Ms. Chase set down her grocery basket and walked over to pat my shoulder. "It's been a while. You have grown sturdier over the years, like a proper man. How have you been? You and your girlfriend should be getting married soon, right?"

I froze, and my smile vanished instantly. When I brought Josephine back before, we had run into Ms. Chase. Back then, she said Josephine and I were a perfect match. Josephine happily agreed, while I stood there slightly embarrassed.

Time had passed, and everything had changed. The emotions I had tried so hard to suppress surged again. I took a deep breath and blinked back the tears.

Seeing my reaction, Ms. Chase hurried to comfort me. "It's my fault for saying too much. It's okay, Nicholas. You're still young. A capable man will never be short of a wife. If it doesn't work out, just find someone else."

Was I still young? Perhaps in the eyes of the elders, I was. But compared to Daniel, who was only in his early 20s, I was already considered old.

Looking back now, Josephine had given me hints. She had once said that at my age, I had already passed the stage of fighting for my career and should step back to take care of the family, while she would provide for me.

Back then, I thought she was only being considerate and completely ignored the underlying meaning.

Thinking back to her chats with Daniel, I realized she didn't just find me old. She wanted me to lose my competitiveness at work so I would become useless and dependent on her. After that, it would be easy for her to control me.

At that moment, the special ringtone I had set for Josephine sounded.

She asked, "Nicholas, where did you go? Are you still angry with me?"

Her voice carried a hint of probing. "Did you see something? Can you tell me why you suddenly got upset?"

"Did you really mean it when you said you would marry me?" I asked.

She replied quickly, "Of course! I meant it. Besides, you don't have to work so hard. You can just do whatever you like."

I looked at the shadows filtering through the leaves and let out a cold laugh. "Are you afraid that if I become more successful, Dad won't leave Daniel anything in his will?"

A dull thud came through from the other end of the line.

Josephine's voice turned stiff. "How did you… Did you see—"

I cut her off. "Don't worry. Your childhood sweetheart—the person you love most and have wanted to marry since you were kids—will get everything. I have no interest in competing with him, so you don't have to swallow your disgust and put on an act for me anymore."

I looked toward the house. "Josephine, don't bother me again."

I decided I needed to go to Dad's place and end things once and for all.

Not long after, my transfer to work abroad came through. I had just finished checking in my luggage at the airport when the sound of hurried footsteps suddenly came from behind me."Nicholas!"Before I could turn around, someone grabbed my sleeve and held on tight."Nicholas, don't go. Please don't leave me."It was Josephine. She usually wore perfect makeup, but now she stood there bare-faced with messy hair. Her eyes were bloodshot. She stared at me with a look of desperation and remorse. "Please don't go. Can we go home? I'm not marrying Daniel anymore. You're the only one I love."I found it laughable. "Go home? Which home? The one where you and Daniel plotted against me?"She shook her head frantically. "No, that's not it! I've already ended things with him. I see who he really is now. He's a leech. He never loved me. All he ever wanted was my money!"I said sarcastically, "Didn't you have feelings for him since you were kids? You were even willing to ruin my future just to

On the last day of the Christmas break, I was packing my bags in a hotel room and getting ready to go abroad when a knock came at the door."Nicholas, it's me, Dad."After hesitating for a moment, I opened the door.He looked at me with red and swollen eyes. He had clearly been crying. "Why are you staying at a hotel instead of coming home—"I cut him off. "That place is no longer my home."His body stiffened, and he didn't dare to meet my gaze. After a long pause, he finally spoke through his tears. "It's my fault. I've been ignoring how you felt all these years. I had no idea how much you were carrying."After seeing everything you posted in the group chat, I finally understood how calculating Daniel really was. I'm sorry. I'll do better going forward. I've already scolded Madeline."His words stirred nothing in me. I said calmly, "The people you've wronged the most are Mom and yourself. She had only been gone for a year when you married Madeline. Her son turned out to be rott

I opened the door and went out to meet the relatives, stopping them in the yard. "Merry Christmas, everyone. Hear me out for a minute."Without any small talk, I stepped onto the front step and spoke loudly. "I, Nicholas Reed, am cutting ties with this family today."It was so sudden that everyone looked at each other, unsure of what to make of it."What? What's going on?""Nicholas, it's Christmas. Why are you saying something like this?"I took a deep breath and pointed to the wound on my head. "Daniel, my dear stepbrother, has resented me since we were kids because he thought I would take his mom's attention away from him. So, he teamed up with his childhood sweetheart—my ex-fiancee, Josephine—to deceive me for five years."One of my cousins gasped. "What? Josephine? Isn't that Daniel's girlfriend's name?"I sent all the chat logs I had taken from Josephine's tablet that day, along with records of the money I had returned to her, to the family group chat.I continued, "Yes.

Daniel's face turned red as he tried to defend himself. "I was… I was just joking with him!"Madeline grabbed Charlotte and pulled her out of the room, muttering, "Kids don't know what they're talking about."Dad paused where he stood and looked at the bandage on my head. In the end, he said nothing and walked away with a sigh.Only Josephine and I remained in the hallway. She reached out to touch my arm, but I pulled away impatiently."Does it hurt?" she asked.Did it hurt? Of course it did. But nothing hurt more than what I felt inside."Save it," I said flatly. She lowered her head, her voice shaking slightly. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I never thought he would do something like that.""Never thought?" I asked. "You two grew up together, and you're telling me you didn't see this coming?"She tried to explain. "I genuinely didn't. You know me. I was always on your side before."I scoffed. "On my side? When he framed me and tried to search me, where were you? When I got s

I got a few stitches and was diagnosed with a mild concussion. I spent the night sitting on a bench in the hospital hallway. The next morning, just as I was about to leave, I ran into Josephine as she walked out.Josephine grabbed my arm, surprise written all over her face. "Nicholas? What are you doing here? Your head—"As if something had just occurred to her, she froze. "That's from last night—"I had no interest in talking to her and simply wanted to leave. She caught up to me. "I'm sorry. Things were just too chaotic at the time. I didn't get to check on you."I let out a dry laugh. "Of course, you didn't. After all, your precious boyfriend sprained his wrist."At the mention of Daniel, she sighed and frowned slightly. "So, why did you steal Daniel's watch? If you had just handed it over back then, you wouldn't have ended up like this."I ground out each word through clenched teeth. "I'll say it one more time. I didn't steal it."Over the past few hours, I had figured out

I snapped, my eyes fixed on Daniel with a piercing glare. "Don't you dare!" With someone backing him up, he grew bolder and gradually closed in on me. "Why wouldn't I dare? Do you have a guilty conscience?"Josephine pinched the bridge of her nose and stood up to stop him. "Stop it, Daniel."His eyes shifted between me and Josephine, then he suddenly looked like he had realized something. "Oh, I get it now."He raised his voice on purpose. "That watch is a token of love from Josephine. You chased her for so long and got nowhere. Now that she's about to marry me, you're jealous, so you stole it just to vent your frustration, right?"Blood rushed to my head at once, and I shook with rage. "That's total crap!"I instinctively looked at Josephine. She froze, then slowly pulled back the hand she had been using to hold Daniel off.Just then, Madeline came downstairs. The moment she took in the scene, she hurried over to smooth things out."I'm sorry, Nicholas," she said. "Don't blam
