Chapter 1

Author: Noisy Whispers
When my mother was brought to shore, her body had turned cold, and she was no longer breathing. I hugged her while trembling, and I tried to wake her up, but she did not move at all.

Rina Shaker came over to us, looking annoyed, and kicked my mother's hand, which had fallen to the ground. "Stop the act. Everyone knows your mother is a professional swimmer. That little wave couldn't have drowned her. Your pitiful act won't convince me to give in so easily.

"There is no compromise when it comes to this. Anyone who marries me must be someone who loves me with all their heart and makes me the most important person in their life. You've really disappointed me this time."

My mother still did not react despite Rina kicking her. A flash of uncertainty flashed in Rina's eyes, and she started to walk forward to check on my mother's condition in a fluster when her childhood crush, Eugene Cullen, stopped her.

Eugene turned to look at my mother's pale face and burst out with a chuckle. "Your mother looks pretty healthy, not at all like she's dying." He patted Rina's shoulder and continued as if he were an expert, "I heard that professional swimmers are great at holding their breath. A couple of minutes under the water won't hurt them.

"It's pretty clear that they've planned this to put you on the spot, Rina. It's all a scheme to guilt you into becoming an obedient daughter-in-law after you marry into their family."

Rina paused and stood still with clenched fists. She turned slowly to look at me and said, "Is this true?" I was about to reply when she stopped me. "Don't. I won't believe what you say anyway. We should postpone our wedding another six months as punishment. I'll reconsider marrying you after you've learned how to love me properly."

With that, Rina held Eugene's arm and left without looking back.

That was when I felt my mother's finger move. I was filled with hope as I grabbed onto this slim chance of her being alive. I quickly crawled over to Rina, "My mom is still alive! She can still be saved! There aren't any hospitals on this island. Please, can you get a private doctor here to check her condition?"

When Rina did not react, I begged her once more.

"Have you forgotten how good she's been to you? She treats you like her own daughter! Back during the flu, she braved the lockdown just to bring you food! She would never do anything to hurt you, let alone give you a hard time after the wedding!"

Rina seemed to be convinced, and she paused. She looked at me thoughtfully for a while before agreeing to my pleading. "All right. I'll get you a doctor."

Eugene tried to stop her. "Rina, you don't have to…"

However, Rina stopped him from saying more. "This is the last time I'll believe you. If the doctor arrives and proves that your mother is fine, you'll need to pay the price for lying to me."

I nodded right away. The important thing was that the doctor would be here to save my mother. As for everything else, they were no longer important.

When the doctor hurried toward us with his medical bag, my mother suddenly threw up sea water, and she started coughing violently.

Rina was so enraged that she could not utter a single word. She turned away and suddenly saw me, and her anger subsided right away. Rina's expression softened as she came over to me gingerly with tears in her eyes. "You're finally willing to see me, Micah. It's been days since I've slept. I can't stop thinking about you, but I can't figure out the perfect way to compensate you."I glanced at Rina and smiled. "Compensate me? I've figured out what you can do for me. It just depends on whether you can accept my suggestion."Rina was overjoyed, and she kept nodding in agreement. "I'll do anything as long as you can forgive me.I replied with a smile, "I'll report this to the police, and I hope you can pay the price for what you did."Rina turned pale. She tried to say something, but nothing came out of her mouth.Eugene burst out laughing when he heard what I said. "Do you have any evidence before spouting your nonsense here, Micah? Rina's parents aren't people you can afford to offen

I wiped away my tears and turned to leave. Rina followed behind me, and soon caught up to me. She wanted to reach out to touch me, but she lacked the courage to do so. Rina called out timidly to me, "Micah…" However, I kept my mouth shut and did not respond.Rina sounded like she was about to cry, and she got a little anxious. "Please talk to me, Micah." She pulled on my hand to beg me not to leave. "Don't blame yourself for this. This is all my fault. I was the one who killed your mother. I'll make amends to her right now. I'll get her the best urn and a cemetery plot with the best view."I flung away her hand, tugging on my sleeve, but she grabbed on tightly. I no longer cared if I hurt her, and I pushed her away with more force. Rina stumbled and fell to the ground, grunting with pain. Despite always being dainty, she did not complain at all about her fall this time. She quickly got up off the ground, afraid that she would lose sight of me. Rina sobbed, "Please talk to me, Mic

"We went to the boat at the harbor after receiving the surveillance footage from you, but we found out that the woman isn't Mr. Sanders' mother. They just looked similar because that woman imitated how Mr. Sanders' mother dressed."Also, the footage was not taken on the alleged day, but was recorded two days later, with the timestamp edited with some sort of software. According to the real footage, the woman did not move at all after you left. "We hired experts to analyze it, and it does seem that she had died."Rina held her breath at this. "What do you mean? Are you telling me she died at sea?" "Yes, Miss Shaker."Rina laughed bleakly at the reply. "I don't believe you. You're pretty sub-par for a private investigator, doing such a shabby job. You can't even find out the truth, so you’re making things up by creating ridiculous stories.""Miss Shaker, we never lie to our clients…"Before the private investigator could finish, Rina hung up on him right away. She tried to stand

I could not stop trembling as I tried my best to cover my ears to stop myself from hearing the strays tearing up my mother's corpse, but the sounds were imprinted into my brain and refused to go away. I knelt and kept banging my head against the ground while I begged, "Please! Let my mom go!"Just come after me if you hate me. Stop torturing her! She's dead! Let me bury her and give her peace. Please!"Rina stopped playing with her nails when she saw how I was acting. "When did you take acting lessons, Micah? I almost feel touched by your performance. People might really be convinced that I killed your mother."If you insist on continuing this act, then fine, I'll play along to the very end. Do you think there aren't any surveillance cameras at the harbors? I'll get my men to retrieve the surveillance footage right now and show you the evidence of your mother being still alive."She took out her phone and made a few calls. "Hello, get me the surveillance footage of the day I was at

I ran over to the coffin in great distress, and I was close to breaking down with what I saw. All Rina did was glance down at the coffin and smile with disdain as she said, "It does look real, doesn't it? That fake body is pretty realistic."The coffin was smashed open, and my mother's body fell out of it. As her body was dressed up, one could only vaguely see her gray hair, her face with her tightly shut eyes. Fortunately, the weather was cold, and even though she was not cremated, her body did not rot as rapidly.I pushed the bodyguards aside without hesitation and ran downstairs. There was only one thought on my mind, which was hoping that my mother's body was in one piece. My mother always had a low tolerance for pain, and I kept thinking about how much she must be hurting from falling from such a high building. It did not matter to me that everyone threw me strange glances when I hugged my mother's body and pushed her hair away from her face. I kept muttering, "I'm so sorry,

I pushed the man in front of me away and went around madly, trying to find Eugene."Why did you let your friends slander my mother like that online, Eugene? It's fine if you target me, but what did my mother do to deserve such defamation after her death?"Eugene slammed his legs on the table haughtily and replied with indifference, "Well, it was your dirty scheme, wasn't it? Don't you have the guts to admit to what you're attempting to do? "You should count yourself lucky that Rina loves you. We're her friends, and it's our duty to help her make sure she finds the right man. You're just a penniless loser, after all. How can we be sure that you don't have an ulterior motive in being with her?"The glass in my hand cracked, and blood seeped through my fingers, but I could not feel the pain. I wanted to say more, but Rina stopped me. "That's enough, Micah. Stop making a fuss over this. Eugene is just concerned for my well-being."We'll be getting married anyway, and I'm just postpon

Everyone was shocked to see my mother suddenly open her eyes. I was stunned as well, but my heart still sank over what was happening, because I knew that this was a sign that my mother was about to die.I quickly pulled the doctor over to her, "My mother won't make it. Please give her first aid…" B
