Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie Moore
Later, Yelena finally won the championship after a fair competition. But her opponent falsely accused her, and she was ultimately disqualified.

She cared deeply about fairness in chemistry. She also expected other scientists to follow high standards in their work.

But in the end, reality got the better of her.

Later, when she was paired with Stanley for a project, Yelena kept complaining to me about how lazy he was.

He couldn't even remember the steps of their experiments. That forced her to pull all-nighters to fix his mistakes. Once, one of his careless errors almost left her permanently disfigured.

I feared Yelena would get hurt, so I risked being accused of favoritism and moved her to another group.

As an academic advisor, I normally stayed out of student group assignments. But I couldn't stand the thought of Yelena being mistreated, so I made an exception.

Yelena was thrilled to get a chance to switch groups. But then Stanley came to see her and said something to her.

When she came back from their talk, she seemed distracted. She never mentioned switching groups again.

After that, she started spending more and more time with Stanley. They were always gaming together.

I slowly realized that Yelena and Stanley were crossing a line, so I warned them to keep their distance.

But Yelena's expression hardened. "Hank, you're Stanley's advisor, and I'm his senior. If he comes to me to exchange ideas and improve his performance, that's good for your reputation too.

"Am I doing something wrong just because I get along well with your student?"

She kept using discussions about experiments as an excuse. But I later found out that she had turned down a more talented chemistry student as a partner because of Stanley.

Even Yelena didn't realize that she had already started to favor Stanley.

And now, she had thrown her principles aside again and tampered with my experimental work to help him.

Just then, a reporter trying to stir up trouble asked, "Ms. Quincy, I've heard you're Professor Hank Yeoman's fiancee, while Mr. Johnson is his student.

"In your opinion, which of the two has greater academic ability, Professor Yeoman or Mr. Johnson?"

Yelena fell silent.

She felt guilty. After all, Stanley had won the competition by cheating.

Stanley stepped in front of her. "I'll answer that for her."

Then he continued, "Professor Yeoman is my advisor. My work might have surpassed his previous achievements this time, but he's still my mentor. His expertise is far beyond mine.

"I'm sure he'll work even harder from now on and once again become the example I strive to follow."

I sneered at his shameless words.

He added, "Still, he is one of the best in the field, yet I have managed to surpass him. I hope he'll spend less time on business and more time in the lab, teaching his students.

"It wouldn't look good if he were surpassed again."

Stanley's remarks clearly had an underlying meaning. The audience began whispering.

"The famous Professor Yeoman claims to love chemistry, but it turns out he's just a greedy businessman!"

"I was planning to study under him, but now I see how little he cares about his students."

"Maybe some of Professor Yeoman's most famous experiments were actually his students' work, and he took credit for them!"

Yelena showed no intention of defending me. "Hank has been busy with other matters lately, so he has neglected his research.

"I'll talk to him when we get home and remind him to stay true to himself. He should return to the principles that drew him to scientific research in the first place."

The crowd grew even louder. A smug smile flashed across Stanley's face as he prepared to say more.

Suddenly, someone in the audience screamed, "Oh my God! There was a massive explosion at Harwood University!

"The academic buildings have been destroyed. More than three thousand students and faculty members are dead!"

A student who disliked me sneered, "Professor Yeoman has been giving public lectures at Harwood University lately. Maybe he was killed in the blast, too!"

With Stanley staring at her in horror, Yelena pulled out another hidden phone. Tears streamed down her face as she smiled at the camera. She said, "Hank wasn't responsible for this explosion. Stanley and I were. Everyone heard it."Hank loved chemistry. He took his work seriously, and he would never risk so many lives just for an experiment."I was the one who switched his chemicals. I wrote the note in the security footage that listed the evidence against me. Hank saw it right before he died. He must've been so disappointed in me."I was wrong. I never should've listened to Stanley. I let Hank down so many times."Hank, I'm sorry. I'm sorry to everyone who died in that lab. Right now, I'm going to keep the promise I made."Yelena set the phone down and picked up my memorial portrait. She lowered her head toward the camera. Then she took out the chemicals she had prepared earlier and slowly poured them into a test tube, just as I had done.Stanley realized what she was about

Yelena and I had been together for five years, and I had never even wanted to hurt her. If she so much as scraped a finger, I would worry about her.But now, looking at her like this, I felt nothing.No. Even if I had seen a stranger beaten this badly, I would've felt sorry for them. But when it came to Yelena, I felt no sympathy at all."Hank. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." She sobbed my name as if she were completely overcome with grief.I didn't know how long Yelena stayed like that. Just when I thought she might never move again, she suddenly got up.She went into the bedroom and opened the window. Then she climbed onto the table, stepped through the window, and jumped.Fortunately, it was only the second floor, and a ledge below broke her fall. She made it downstairs without trouble. What was she doing?I followed her and watched as she bought a new phone. Then she printed a memorial photo of me and took some chemicals from a lab.Carrying everything, Yelena walked toward the

Yelena sat frozen in shock. After a long silence, she suddenly looked at Stanley."Stanley, how is your mom doing?"Stanley clearly hadn't expected the question. His eyes shifted as he gave an awkward smile. "She's fine. Thanks to the doctor you found, she was able to get the surgery she needed to save her life. She's recovering well."She was so happy when she saw me win. Oh, and I'll give you half of the prize money."You have no idea how many universities have contacted me since I won. Some businesses have reached out too. They're offering me very high salaries."Once they build me a reputation as a top professor, I'll be making money even faster!"His voice rose as he spoke, his excitement growing.Stanley grabbed Yelena's hand, practically euphoric. "Yelena, let's be together. Hank is dead, anyway. If you marry me, no one can say anything."I have money now. I can give you the kind of life you…"With a loud smack, Yelena slapped Stanley across the face, knocking his hea

Meanwhile, the victims' families couldn't let go of their anger. They spent their days grieving outside the damaged lab building. Some even went inside carrying photos of me, hurling paint around and cursing me.People livestreamed the protests, and the police couldn't keep them under control. The whole thing became a huge spectacle.Yelena was on edge as reports of the explosion flooded the internet. Then, late one night, she went to the lab building alone. She stared at the dark, gutted building, where the smell of smoke still lingered.Tears streamed down her face. She had disguised herself.Sitting on the ground, she lit candles in front of her and tried to hold back her sobs as she whispered through her tears. "Hank, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."The victims' families around her were holding a candlelight vigil. They assumed she had lost a loved one in the blast too, so no one paid much attention to her.But the news soon reached Stanley."Yelena, have you lost your mind? Th

Yelena thought she would only make my experiment fail, but instead, she killed me and so many others.Lucy stared at Yelena. Then she noticed the phone in Yelena's tight grip.A thought struck her, and she shouted, "Her phone! Search Yelena's phone! She would have left a trace if she went to the lab to switch the chemicals."She has to have gotten them from somewhere else. There must be proof on her phone!"When Lucy saw that the police weren't doing anything, she rushed over and tried to take Yelena's phone.Yelena was knocked to the ground. Stanley quickly stepped in front of her and pushed Lucy away.Another fight broke out. In the end, the police took Yelena, Stanley, and Lucy to the police station for questioning. On the way there, Stanley sat beside Yelena and whispered, "Yelena, the footage didn't show what was written on the note, so there's no proof tying you to it."When we get to the station, say you need to use the bathroom and delete anything related to the past

Yelena's face went deathly pale. She knew exactly what it meant if the footage was recovered. The chemicals used during the experiment would be clearly visible, as would the note she had written and hidden beneath the lab table. The note spelled out exactly what she had done. There would be no way for her and Stanley to escape the consequences.Stanley clearly hadn't expected this turn of events. Panic flashed across his face. After some quick thinking, he suddenly called out to the person who had announced the news. "Don't believe every rumor you see online. People are just trying to cash in on the attention this is getting!"The classroom was at the center of a massive explosion. There is almost no chance the security footage survived. Even if it did, they couldn't have recovered it this fast!"The crowd began arguing again, debating whether the news was even true.Lucy's hopes were crushed again, and she clenched her fists in frustration. But an officer spoke up. "It's st
