Chapter 1

"Hi, Daddy Noah!"

The clear chime of a child's voice cut into my heart like a piercing dagger.

I stood in the doorway, suitcase still in hand, my whole body frozen as if I'd just been struck by lightning.

Before me was the home I'd been away from for three years.

Streamers and balloons hung all over the living room. The banner reading "Welcome Home" swayed overhead, the words stinging my eyes.

However, the most painful sight of all was my fiancee, Erica Lewis. She stood there with a pregnant belly, holding a boy who was a little over a year old in her arms.

My older brother, Alex Sherman, stood behind her. One hand rested intimately on her belly while the other kneaded her shoulder without the slightest restraint.

"You're finally back!" Erica was tearing up, but she didn't step forward to greet me.

It felt as if someone had stuffed a rag down my throat. I couldn't speak.

"Why are you just standing there? Come see your son!" Mom walked over and grabbed my hand. "Isn't he adorable? He'll call you Daddy Noah from now on."

"What's going on, Mom?" The hoarse voice that escaped my throat sounded completely unlike my own.

Patting my shoulder, Dad said, "Well, you were gone for three years. Your mom and I were eager to have a grandchild, so…"

I flicked Dad's hand off me. "So what?"

"So I helped you out." Alex sauntered over with an arrogant smile on his face. Right in front of me, he wrapped an arm around Erica's waist and kissed her on the cheek. "The kid's going to have the same last name as you anyway. You're not losing out on anything."

I stared at them, eyes wide, unable to believe what I was seeing.

Having spent the three years on a special ops mission, I fought my hardest to survive, just so I could come home, marry Erica, and start a family.

But now, I came back to find that she'd given birth to Alex's child, and the kid was going to treat me like his second father?

Erica finally moved. She handed the boy to Alex before walking toward me, her eyes teary. "I know you can't accept this right now. But I waited for you for three years. I had to have a child, right?"

She said that as if it were the most reasonable thing in the world, but all I felt was disgust.

"Why are you pulling a long face?" Mom abruptly snapped, her expression turning cold. "Do you have any idea that while you were gone the last three years, it was Alex who has been taking care of Erica and us?

"He has worked so hard to look after your parents and help you perform your duties as a husband. Now that the wedding is finally happening, you're just going to come back and put a damper on everything?"

Wedding? Who was Alex about to marry?

My mind went blank, but I soon caught on.

Alex slung an arm around my shoulders, and he deliberately raised his voice so that everyone could hear, "Noah, Erica and I will be getting married tomorrow. Guess what role we arranged for you?"

I didn't answer. Every muscle in my body was coiled tight, ready to snap.

"You'll be the officiant!" he announced loudly, as if bestowing the greatest honor upon me. "Doesn't that show how much we respect you?"

At my continued silence, Mom snapped impatiently, "Don't get upset about it. Alex and Erica had to carry on the family name for us, and it hasn't been easy for them. It's only right to let them have a wedding ceremony.

"Besides, it will still be your name on the marriage certificate with Erica. You're not suffering any loss."

Dad took out a folded sheet of paper from his pocket and handed it to me. "Just read this out loud. You should start practicing now so you don't embarrass yourself during the ceremony."

My hands trembled as I took the paper with the officiant's script printed on it.

"On this beautiful day, as the officiant, I bear witness to the union of my beloved brother and my fiancee…"

I gripped the paper so tightly that it started to tear with a crisp sound, and it felt as if my heart tore with it.

"That's settled then," Alex piped up. "I'm having a bachelor's party before the wedding. A bunch of my friends will be celebrating with me, and you're driving. Let's go. I don't want to be late."

As my parents urged me to hurry along, I took the car keys, my hands trembling.

He died the moment they forced me to be the officiant. It wasn't just our immediate family that fell apart. The scandal had shaken the entire Sherman family. The rest of my relatives quickly called for a family meeting and voted to sever all ties with my parents.During the meeting, my great-uncle with the most say in the family bitterly declared, "Having a national traitor in the family is a disgrace to all of us! For the sake of our family's honor, we must sever all ties with Alex and his parents."All of our relatives quickly cut ties with Alex and my parents, afraid of getting dragged down with them. Those who had once mocked me now didn't even dare to call me. Those aunts and uncles of mine avoided me entirely, afraid that our paths would cross.Erica's family, the Lewises, was also

Erica's belly was even bigger than before. Her face was pale, her eyes red and puffy."The court is now in session!" the judge announced, his expression stern as he struck the gavel. The prosecutor went first. "The first defendant, Alex Sherman, is charged with leaking military secrets, misappropriating military assets, and forging medi

After the applause died down, Erica stumbled toward me and abruptly dropped to her knees."Please forgive me!" she pleaded, tears streaming down her face that was covered in streaky makeup. She clutched my pants tightly. "I really loved you! I didn't know Alex would do such things… He tricked me…"I eyed her coldly without any trace of pity."I was wrong." Erica nudged closer and wrapped her arms around my legs, crying so hard she could barely breathe. "Give me one more chance. I'll change… We can still—""We?" I ripped her arms off me, my voice cold as ice. "Did you get kicked in the head? You betrayed me, lied to me, and humiliated me. You call that love?"You publicly mocked me for being impotent. You went behind my back and had an affair with my brother. You expect me to be the child's second dad. And now you have the audacity to ask for my forgiveness?""Alex forced me into it! He said that if I didn't go along with him, he'd tell everyone I'd cheated on you… I had no choice

The ballroom descended into total chaos, with the guests buzzing with excitement. Some were taking photos, and a few even started recording the scene. The wedding ceremony had been reduced to a farce that was rapidly spinning out of control."Quiet, please!" A commanding voice cut cleanly through the noise. All heads turned.A general in full military uniform stood at the entrance of the ballroom with a line of military officers behind him. The insignia on his shoulders gleamed beneath the lights, and the medals on his chest indicated his distinguished rank.Everyone instantly fell silent. Only Erica's sobbing and Alex's curses could still be heard. After walking up onto the podium, the general said in a booming voice, "I'm Milton Crane, the Chief of Military Intelligence and Security."I am here to formally confirm the identity of Major Noah Sherman. He is an S-class special operations officer with the code name Nighthawk. He has been the mission officer for three overseas inter

The video was still playing. It was a recording of Alex talking to a doctor. The doctor asked, "Are you sure you want to forge a medical report diagnosing impotence? That's illegal, you know.""How much do you want? Is 100 thousand dollars enough?" Alex asked. "My brother is never home anyway. He won't find out. I need everyone to believe he's the one who can't get it up. That's the only way I can take his woman for myself without anyone doubting my motives."No one spoke. All that could be heard in the ballroom was sharp intakes of breath."T-That's fake!" Alex snapped back to his senses, his face ashen as he lunged toward me. "Turn it off, you lunatic!"The security guards I'd hired in advance quickly restrained him.Sneering, I pressed play again. More evidence filled the screen.I played footage of Alex bribing the hospital, clearly showing how he paid off a doctor to fabricate the diagnosis. There was also another clip of Alex and Erica plotting to seize my assets. On the day of the wedding, the ballroom was packed with guests, and everyone was buzzing with excitement.I stood in the corner, while all of the wedding couple's friends and family clustered in small groups. They glanced my way from time to time, their eyes full of pity and mockery."What a pitiful man. His own fiancee got knocked up by his brother, and he's still here as the officiant.""I heard he's impotent. That's why Erica got involved with his brother.""That explains it. In this day and age, what woman wants to live like a widow even when her husband's still alive?"The whispers drifted into my ears, and every word cut me like a knife. I clenched my fists, forcing myself not to explode on the spot.It wasn't time yet.A man who looked like a reporter approached me. He handed me his business card, saying, "Hello, I'm with the Metropolitan Daily. I hear you're the groom's brother and the bride's former fiance?""Yes," I calmly replied."Well, that's not something you see
