LOGINIn Willow Creek, there is an unspoken rule about wedding processions: never retrace your route. But on the day we are supposed to get married, my fiancee, Emma Carter, orders our entire wedding procession to turn around and drive more than 12 miles back the way we've come—just to catch up with another wedding convoy. I am about to get out and demand an explanation when I overhear Emma talking to one of her bridesmaids, Lena Williams. "You drove more than 60 miles just to make it to Ryan's wedding," Lena says. "That's some serious dedication." Then she glances nervously in my direction. "And now you're making us turn around? Aren't you worried Nathan's going to be pissed?" Emma continues directing the drivers to turn the procession around. "Don't worry. He's waited ten years for me. No matter how angry he gets, he'll never actually call off the wedding. "If my family hadn't pressured me so much, I wouldn't have agreed to marry him this easily. "Ryan's biggest wish has always been to marry me, and that's not going to happen now. So turning back to see him off for part of the journey is the least I can do. It's a small way of making up for all those years he spent chasing after me." When the matching wedding bands slip from my hand and disappear beneath the seat, I let out a bitter laugh. So much for finally getting our happy ending after all those years of hardship. Apparently, that is only wishful thinking on my part. I pull out my phone, open my messaging app, and send a woman my location. "Are you still planning to marry me? I'm waiting for you here. Come. Now."
View MoreSix months later, Audrey and I returned home.We brought our business partners from Westford with us to tour the company. As we were driving through an intersection, a man suddenly ran a red light and stepped into our path. The driver slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. We hit him. The driver immediately got out and rushed over to check on the man. After helping him to his feet, the man suddenly grabbed the driver and started laughing. "Emma! I like the suit you bought me!"He then announced, "I'm going to marry you! I don't have a home anymore. Can I come home with you?"No matter how hard the driver tried, the man refused to let go. The driver could only turn helplessly toward Audrey. "Call the police," Audrey said. "Let them handle this." But before the call could even connect, Ryan suddenly burst into laughter and bolted down the road."No! Don't! Don't let them take me away!"He glanced back over his shoulder, still laughing. "I'm a good boy! You don't wan
Ryan lay unconscious in the ICU. His mind drifted in and out of darkness, pulling him back to the day of his wedding. "Ryan, this is where I leave you." Emma had stepped out of the wedding car with her bridesmaids. Without saying another word, she slammed the door, got behind the wheel, and sped away. The moment Ryan heard her words, his heart clenched. He scrambled out of the car and ran after her, shouting at the top of his lungs. "Emma! I'm calling off the wedding! Take me with you! I'll marry you!" But Emma never stopped. All Ryan heard was the deafening roar of the engine as her car disappeared into the distance. Ryan turned back toward the wedding car, intending to grab his phone and call Emma. But before he could reach it, a woman stepped into his path. "Big Molly, move." Molly Dawson, the woman Ryan was supposed to marry that day, stood blocking his way. She was the wealthy daughter of a family that had made a fortune from a massive redevelopment payout.
The next day, Audrey and I went to the courthouse and made our marriage official. Meanwhile, my phone buzzed nonstop. When I finally checked it, I found message after message from Emma's best friends. Lena begged, "Nathan, please go see Emma. She's been unconscious ever since her surgery."Claire wrote, "Nathan, Emma keeps calling your name. Please, I'm begging you. Just go see her."Then Selena's message came through, furious and accusatory. "Nathan, Emma got into that accident because of you! Do you have a conscience? Can't you even go see her once?"Some pleaded with me, some blamed me, and others cursed me out. But I didn't care anymore. I removed my SIM card, walked into a phone store, and canceled the number for good. Audrey held my hand the entire time without saying a single word. On the drive home, though, we passed Ryan. He was still wearing the suit from the day before. It was filthy from head to toe, and the bandages around his ankles were caked with mud.
Roses bloomed wildly along both sides of the red carpet. With Audrey's arm linked through mine, I walked beside her, step by step, toward the altar. "Nathan, we had to put this together on short notice. We'll have a much bigger wedding later."I shook my head, smiling. "This is more than enough. I can tell how much thought you put into all of this." There weren't many people present. They were all close friends of Audrey's—people who had stood by her through thick and thin. As everyone looked on with warm smiles, Audrey pulled out a custom-made diamond ring. "Nathan, we've known each other since we were kids. After all these years, I finally get to stand here and be by your side for the rest of your life."For the longest time, all I wanted was to be the older sister you could always count on. The person you could run to whenever you needed a safe place. "But now, I'm asking you to let me be something more. Give me the chance to spend the rest of my life with you. Will y
