Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: June Quint
Emma froze for a moment before letting out a helpless sigh. She said, "Nathan, playing hard to get might work on some people, but it's not going to work on me."

I stubbornly stayed in the car, refusing to give in to what she wanted.

She let out a cold laugh and dropped her arms to her sides. "You're really going through with this?"

"Yes. Until we're officially done, don't expect me to do anything for you," I said.

Emma's expression shifted, complicated emotions flickering across her face as she glanced toward Ryan.

After a long moment, she quietly said, "Fine."

After getting the answer I wanted, I stepped out of the car and walked right past her.

She leaned closer and warned me under her breath. "If you're only doing this to take your anger out on Ryan, don't blame me if I leave you stranded here."

People from both wedding parties lined the roadside, watching in silence.

Dressed in a black suit and leather shoes, I walked toward another vehicle.

Whispers broke out around me, followed by a few mocking smirks as everyone assumed I was heading over to help Ryan.

Inside a Mercedes SUV worth more than a million dollars, Ryan sat in the back seat, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit and looking effortlessly polished.

He leaned back comfortably and extended his injured foot, his smile casual. "Thanks for this, Nathan," he said.

"We studied medicine together in college. Who would've thought that on my wedding day, I'd twist my ankle and end up being treated by one of my old classmates?" He chuckled. "What are the odds?"

Then he turned to Emma. "Emma, you really should cherish a fiance as kind and helpful as Nathan. If you ever treat him badly, I might have to stop talking to you."

Emma looked at Ryan, her eyes filled with unmistakable happiness.

I crouched, carefully lifted Ryan's foot, and examined his ankle.

"Ah!" Suddenly, he screamed.

"Nathan Cole! What are you doing?"

Emma suddenly grabbed me and yanked me away, cradling Ryan's foot as if it were made of glass.

I hit the asphalt hard. My palm scraped against the pavement, and blood began to well up.

"Ryan, Nathan barely even touched you! What are you yelling for?" Walter snapped, pointing angrily at him.

Then he turned on Emma. "And you, Emma! What the hell is wrong with you? Since when does treating an injury not hurt? The guy lets out one little cry, and you shove Nathan to the ground?"

"You—" Emma's chest rose and fell as she struggled to rein in her anger.

Knowing that she was in the wrong, she had no choice but to swallow her frustration. Reluctantly, she grabbed my shoulder and helped me back to my feet.

"I'm sorry. I overreacted because I was worried," she apologized.

Ryan shrugged and gave me an awkward smile.

"Sorry, Nathan. You know me. I've always had a low pain tolerance. I really didn't mean to yell."

I didn't want to hear another word. I just wanted to finish treating his ankle and leave.

"Do we have any ice? Gauze?"

Someone answered, "We have gauze, but no ice. Just some bottled water from the cooler."

"Bring me everything," I ordered.

Emma watched silently as I worked, my expression completely unreadable. A strange uneasiness began to settle in her chest.

She tried several times to help, but each time, I quietly moved her hands aside without saying a single word.

I soaked the gauze and carefully wrapped it around Ryan's swollen ankle.

"Ah!"

Ryan suddenly kicked me in the face. I lost my balance and fell backward onto the pavement.

"Oh, God— Sorry, Nathan! I swear I didn't mean to do that this time."

I lowered my head and took a slow, steadying breath.

Emma didn't even try to reach out to catch me.

She simply said, "Ryan, Nathan has been crouched there treating your ankle this whole time. Stop messing with him."

Ryan curled his lips into a mocking smile, looking completely unconcerned.

Then Emma added, "I'll apologize on his behalf. Let me help you up."

I gently pushed her hand away, keeping my voice polite but distant as I said, "No, thank you."

Then I finished the last step of the treatment.

"We don't have any ice, so every half hour, pour some ice-cold water over the bandage to help reduce the swelling. Avoid any strenuous activity, and don't stay on your feet for too long."

Ryan looked down at his ankle, slowly rolling his foot from side to side. "It doesn't really feel like I've been treated," he said, shrugging. "But thanks."

Without looking back, I walked toward my own wedding car.

Behind me, Emma bumped Lena's shoulder and whispered, "See? I told you. He's just playing hard to get. I knew it. All that talk about breaking up was just a way to make me feel guilty."

Lena praised her. "Emma, you really know how to handle Nathan. Look at you. You've got him wrapped around your finger."

Emma smiled. "Men are like that. You can't give them too much, or they'll start expecting everything."

I said nothing.

I simply opened the car door, grabbed my things, and motioned for my groomsmen to come over.

Then I strode toward the person who had come to pick me up.

Six months later, Audrey and I returned home.We brought our business partners from Westford with us to tour the company. As we were driving through an intersection, a man suddenly ran a red light and stepped into our path. The driver slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. We hit him. The driver immediately got out and rushed over to check on the man. After helping him to his feet, the man suddenly grabbed the driver and started laughing. "Emma! I like the suit you bought me!"He then announced, "I'm going to marry you! I don't have a home anymore. Can I come home with you?"No matter how hard the driver tried, the man refused to let go. The driver could only turn helplessly toward Audrey. "Call the police," Audrey said. "Let them handle this." But before the call could even connect, Ryan suddenly burst into laughter and bolted down the road."No! Don't! Don't let them take me away!"He glanced back over his shoulder, still laughing. "I'm a good boy! You don't wan

Ryan lay unconscious in the ICU. His mind drifted in and out of darkness, pulling him back to the day of his wedding. "Ryan, this is where I leave you." Emma had stepped out of the wedding car with her bridesmaids. Without saying another word, she slammed the door, got behind the wheel, and sped away. The moment Ryan heard her words, his heart clenched. He scrambled out of the car and ran after her, shouting at the top of his lungs. "Emma! I'm calling off the wedding! Take me with you! I'll marry you!" But Emma never stopped. All Ryan heard was the deafening roar of the engine as her car disappeared into the distance. Ryan turned back toward the wedding car, intending to grab his phone and call Emma. But before he could reach it, a woman stepped into his path. "Big Molly, move." Molly Dawson, the woman Ryan was supposed to marry that day, stood blocking his way. She was the wealthy daughter of a family that had made a fortune from a massive redevelopment payout.

The next day, Audrey and I went to the courthouse and made our marriage official. Meanwhile, my phone buzzed nonstop. When I finally checked it, I found message after message from Emma's best friends. Lena begged, "Nathan, please go see Emma. She's been unconscious ever since her surgery."Claire wrote, "Nathan, Emma keeps calling your name. Please, I'm begging you. Just go see her."Then Selena's message came through, furious and accusatory. "Nathan, Emma got into that accident because of you! Do you have a conscience? Can't you even go see her once?"Some pleaded with me, some blamed me, and others cursed me out. But I didn't care anymore. I removed my SIM card, walked into a phone store, and canceled the number for good. Audrey held my hand the entire time without saying a single word. On the drive home, though, we passed Ryan. He was still wearing the suit from the day before. It was filthy from head to toe, and the bandages around his ankles were caked with mud.

Roses bloomed wildly along both sides of the red carpet. With Audrey's arm linked through mine, I walked beside her, step by step, toward the altar. "Nathan, we had to put this together on short notice. We'll have a much bigger wedding later."I shook my head, smiling. "This is more than enough. I can tell how much thought you put into all of this." There weren't many people present. They were all close friends of Audrey's—people who had stood by her through thick and thin. As everyone looked on with warm smiles, Audrey pulled out a custom-made diamond ring. "Nathan, we've known each other since we were kids. After all these years, I finally get to stand here and be by your side for the rest of your life."For the longest time, all I wanted was to be the older sister you could always count on. The person you could run to whenever you needed a safe place. "But now, I'm asking you to let me be something more. Give me the chance to spend the rest of my life with you. Will y

Audrey glanced at me. "Nathan, get rid of all that old stuff. I brought you something better."Joshua reached into the back seat and pulled out a small case. The second he opened it, the custom-made jewelry inside caught the light, practically blinding us with its sparkle. "Nathan, you've got the whole package here," Joshua said. "Wedding clothes, jewelry—everything!"Walter let out a low whistle. "Damn, Audrey. You've got some serious money to throw around."Joshua laughed and slapped my shoulder. "Nathan, with a rich, gorgeous woman like Audrey chasing after you, why the hell did you waste all these years settling for that mess?"Before I could say a single word, my groomsmen started tossing my old clothes and accessories out of the convertible, piece by piece. As the car sped down the mountain road, I changed into the new suit and swapped out my old watch and accessories for the ones Audrey had brought. When I finally looked in the mirror, I could barely recognize myself.

I walked right past the people. The bridesmaids and Emma stood there, completely stunned. "What the hell?" Lena blurted.Claire stared after me. "He's really leaving."Emma froze for a second before finally snapping out of it. She rushed after me and grabbed my hand, a faint edge of panic creeping into her voice. "Nathan Cole, what the hell do you think you're doing?"I looked at her and said, "We're breaking up. It's exactly what it sounds like."She raised her voice. "Are you seriously doing this right now? Can't you see everyone's waiting for you?"I glanced back. 24 wedding cars stretched out behind us, but not a single person was waiting for me. "They're waiting for you," I said coldly. "They're waiting for you to walk your childhood sweetheart down this entire road, roll out the red carpet, set off the fireworks, and then wave goodbye as he leaves."Emma clenched her jaw, guilt written all over her face. For once, she had nothing to say. I pulled my hand free an
