Chapter 1

24 wedding cars continued slowly up along the winding mountain road.

Two of my groomsmen, Walter Wilson and Joshua Gunn, stood with their arms crossed, growing increasingly frustrated.

Walter finally spoke up. "Emma, we've already backed up more than 12 miles. At this rate, we're going to end up right back at your front door!"

Joshua shook his head. "Seriously. The road isn't even that narrow. We could've easily pulled over and let them pass."

With every mile we retraced, the disappointment in my heart grew heavier.

Finally, Joshua got out of the car to speak up for me.

"Emma, don't you know that wedding processions aren't supposed to retrace their route? We've already backed up more than 12 miles. How much farther are we supposed to go?"

Emma Carter, my fiancee, sensed the tension and hurried over. She lifted the hem of her wedding dress as she approached.

She leaned toward my car window, her face so close that I could see the faint tremor in her eyes. Normally, even the slightest hint of her gardenia perfume would've been enough to completely disarm me, but not anymore.

"Nathan, just hang in there a little longer. Once we reach the next turnoff, we'll stop backing up."

I glanced toward the wedding car across from us. Ryan Mitchell was sitting inside, watching the scene unfold, his smile mocking.

"Do whatever you want," I said.

Emma's smile faltered. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to answer that way.

Her bridesmaids immediately crowded around her.

Lena Williams spoke first. "Nathan, don't be mad. The road's too narrow for both convoys to get past each other, so we don't have a choice. We have to back up."

Selena Addams quickly chimed in, saying, "Exactly. We're closer to the turnoff anyway. Backing up is the fastest way to get everyone moving again."

Claire Gomez nodded. "Yeah, Nathan. Don't give Emma the cold shoulder. She's in a tough spot, too."

I let out a cold laugh.

"Weren't there two turnoffs just a minute ago? Why haven't any of you suggested backing up in the other direction?"

The bridesmaids fell silent. They exchanged awkward glances before slowly turning toward Emma.

Emma took my hand and explained softly, "Nathan, this is my fault. I didn't plan the route properly. Once we get home, I'll make it up to you. I promise."

Was it really poor planning? Or had she deliberately chosen this route just so she could see Ryan off?

I quietly released the breath I'd been holding and shook my head. I didn't have the energy to argue anymore. "Forget it, Emma."

The bridesmaids completely missed the tension in my voice and immediately started praising me instead.

Claire smiled. "See? I knew Nathan would understand. He's always so considerate of Emma."

Lena laughed. "Aww, look at him giving us all this PDA. Guess we don't even need to say anything anymore."

Still laughing and joking, they pulled Emma away and continued directing the wedding cars to make room for Ryan's convoy.

Meanwhile, my phone started buzzing nonstop with incoming messages. They were all from the same person.

"Nathan, I thought you had more backbone than this. Guess even on your wedding day, you still have to make way for me.

"Heh. I didn't even have to say anything, and Emma cleared the road for me. Anyone who didn't know better might think that I was the groom."

Then Ryan sent me a screenshot of a social media post Emma had just made.

The caption read, "If I can't marry you, then I'll at least pave the way for you."

I looked at the road ahead.

More than 12 miles of it had been covered in a pristine red carpet, turning the winding mountain road into a path fit for a wedding.

My nose stung, and my hands trembled uncontrollably.

I forced down the anger rising in my chest and called Emma, who was near the back of the procession.

"Emma, stop the convoy. We're not backing up anymore."

There was a two-second silence on the other end of the line.

"Nathan, just two more miles. We're almost at the turnoff—"

I hung up and took a deep breath, thinking:

'Emma, from this moment on, I'm done waiting for you at my own expense. '

  • My Fiancée's Wedding Detour   Chapter 9

Six months later, Audrey and I returned home.We brought our business partners from Westford with us to tour the company. As we were driving through an intersection, a man suddenly ran a red light and stepped into our path. The driver slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. We hit him. The driver immediately got out and rushed over to check on the man. After helping him to his feet, the man suddenly grabbed the driver and started laughing. "Emma! I like the suit you bought me!"He then announced, "I'm going to marry you! I don't have a home anymore. Can I come home with you?"No matter how hard the driver tried, the man refused to let go. The driver could only turn helplessly toward Audrey. "Call the police," Audrey said. "Let them handle this." But before the call could even connect, Ryan suddenly burst into laughter and bolted down the road."No! Don't! Don't let them take me away!"He glanced back over his shoulder, still laughing. "I'm a good boy! You don't wan

Ryan lay unconscious in the ICU. His mind drifted in and out of darkness, pulling him back to the day of his wedding. "Ryan, this is where I leave you." Emma had stepped out of the wedding car with her bridesmaids. Without saying another word, she slammed the door, got behind the wheel, and sped away. The moment Ryan heard her words, his heart clenched. He scrambled out of the car and ran after her, shouting at the top of his lungs. "Emma! I'm calling off the wedding! Take me with you! I'll marry you!" But Emma never stopped. All Ryan heard was the deafening roar of the engine as her car disappeared into the distance. Ryan turned back toward the wedding car, intending to grab his phone and call Emma. But before he could reach it, a woman stepped into his path. "Big Molly, move." Molly Dawson, the woman Ryan was supposed to marry that day, stood blocking his way. She was the wealthy daughter of a family that had made a fortune from a massive redevelopment payout.

The next day, Audrey and I went to the courthouse and made our marriage official. Meanwhile, my phone buzzed nonstop. When I finally checked it, I found message after message from Emma's best friends. Lena begged, "Nathan, please go see Emma. She's been unconscious ever since her surgery."Claire wrote, "Nathan, Emma keeps calling your name. Please, I'm begging you. Just go see her."Then Selena's message came through, furious and accusatory. "Nathan, Emma got into that accident because of you! Do you have a conscience? Can't you even go see her once?"Some pleaded with me, some blamed me, and others cursed me out. But I didn't care anymore. I removed my SIM card, walked into a phone store, and canceled the number for good. Audrey held my hand the entire time without saying a single word. On the drive home, though, we passed Ryan. He was still wearing the suit from the day before. It was filthy from head to toe, and the bandages around his ankles were caked with mud.

Roses bloomed wildly along both sides of the red carpet. With Audrey's arm linked through mine, I walked beside her, step by step, toward the altar. "Nathan, we had to put this together on short notice. We'll have a much bigger wedding later."I shook my head, smiling. "This is more than enough. I can tell how much thought you put into all of this." There weren't many people present. They were all close friends of Audrey's—people who had stood by her through thick and thin. As everyone looked on with warm smiles, Audrey pulled out a custom-made diamond ring. "Nathan, we've known each other since we were kids. After all these years, I finally get to stand here and be by your side for the rest of your life."For the longest time, all I wanted was to be the older sister you could always count on. The person you could run to whenever you needed a safe place. "But now, I'm asking you to let me be something more. Give me the chance to spend the rest of my life with you. Will y

Audrey glanced at me. "Nathan, get rid of all that old stuff. I brought you something better."Joshua reached into the back seat and pulled out a small case. The second he opened it, the custom-made jewelry inside caught the light, practically blinding us with its sparkle. "Nathan, you've got the whole package here," Joshua said. "Wedding clothes, jewelry—everything!"Walter let out a low whistle. "Damn, Audrey. You've got some serious money to throw around."Joshua laughed and slapped my shoulder. "Nathan, with a rich, gorgeous woman like Audrey chasing after you, why the hell did you waste all these years settling for that mess?"Before I could say a single word, my groomsmen started tossing my old clothes and accessories out of the convertible, piece by piece. As the car sped down the mountain road, I changed into the new suit and swapped out my old watch and accessories for the ones Audrey had brought. When I finally looked in the mirror, I could barely recognize myself.

I walked right past the people. The bridesmaids and Emma stood there, completely stunned. "What the hell?" Lena blurted.Claire stared after me. "He's really leaving."Emma froze for a second before finally snapping out of it. She rushed after me and grabbed my hand, a faint edge of panic creeping into her voice. "Nathan Cole, what the hell do you think you're doing?"I looked at her and said, "We're breaking up. It's exactly what it sounds like."She raised her voice. "Are you seriously doing this right now? Can't you see everyone's waiting for you?"I glanced back. 24 wedding cars stretched out behind us, but not a single person was waiting for me. "They're waiting for you," I said coldly. "They're waiting for you to walk your childhood sweetheart down this entire road, roll out the red carpet, set off the fireworks, and then wave goodbye as he leaves."Emma clenched her jaw, guilt written all over her face. For once, she had nothing to say. I pulled my hand free an
