Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: June Quint
I reached for the door, ready to get out, when the back end of the car suddenly dropped.

The sudden drop slammed my elbow and head against the door.

A sharp burst of pain made me suck in a breath. And the scene around me erupted into chaos.

"The rear wheel fell into the drainage ditch!"

"Someone help! Get over here!"

"Nathan! Nathan, are you okay? Are you hurt?"

Two of my groomsmen immediately rushed over and banged on the window, frantically checking to make sure I was alright.

I raised a hand to my forehead. When I pulled it back, my fingers were wet.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Emma running toward the wedding car, looking frantic.

But as she got closer, I realized that she wasn't running toward my tilted car at all. Instead, she ran straight to the other vehicle.

"Are you freaking blind? Do you realize that you scared Ryan?" Emma snapped, pointing angrily at the other driver.

People from both wedding parties exchanged glances, covering their mouths to hide their laughter.

They weren't laughing at the car. They were laughing at me.

I closed my eyes, wishing I could disappear, not wanting to stay there for another second.

The driver tried for several minutes to free the trapped rear wheel, but it still wouldn't budge.

Soon, everyone had gathered around the car, discussing how to get it out of the ditch.

"Shouldn't the groom get out first?" someone suggested. "What if he gets hurt while we're lifting the car?"

"Yeah, better safe than sorry. It's his wedding day, after all."

Everyone agreed.

When Emma returned after checking on Ryan, she immediately shook her head.

"No. Nathan can only get out once we reach our destination. I already got out of the car earlier, and if the groom gets out halfway through the journey too, it would be considered a huge disrespect to our tradition."

I smiled bitterly at her words.

So she knew. She knew exactly how disrespectful it was for the bride to get out of the car before reaching the destination. Yet when it came to Ryan, she hadn't hesitated for even a second.

Everyone fell silent.

It took everyone working together to finally pull the car out of the ditch.

Once it was back on the road, Emma gathered up the long train of her wedding dress and turned to me, her smile bright.

"Nathan, you're not hurt, are you? I'm sorry for causing so many problems today. How about we go to the Marivelle Islands for our honeymoon after the wedding?"

She had always known exactly how to use that impossibly gentle voice to calm me down.

But this time, I didn't want to be comforted. I just wanted to leave.

"When we reach the next turnoff, I'll head home on my—"

I didn't even get to finish my sentence when someone screamed, "Emma! Ryan twisted his ankle!"

The moment Emma heard that Ryan was hurt, she turned without a second thought and hurried toward the other wedding convoy.

For a moment, as I watched her rush toward him, I couldn't help but feel like she was the bride of that wedding—not mine.

My groomsmen were furious.

Walter shook his head. "If he twisted his ankle, then tell him to sit down and rest. What's the big deal?"

Joshua scoffed. "There are more than a dozen grown men over there, and they can't handle a single thing themselves. The second something happens, they call Emma!"

Joshua turned to me, his expression tight with frustration. "Nathan, if you hadn't sworn you'd marry no one but Emma, I would've dragged you out of here myself a long time ago."

I simply smiled. I wouldn't be staying here much longer either.

The person coming to pick me up was already on the way.

A few moments later, Emma returned from Ryan's car, where she'd been crouching beside him and checking his injury.

She frowned, shoved one of my groomsmen aside, and yanked open my door.

Her voice was urgent, leaving no room for argument. "Ryan twisted his ankle. You're a doctor. Get out and take a look at him!"

I moved farther into my seat, trying to put as much distance between us as I could while she tried to pull me out.

My groomsmen immediately stepped between us.

Joshua frowned. "Emma, you just said so yourself that getting out of the car before we reach the wedding venue would be disrespectful to our tradition. Did you already forget?"

Walter nodded. "Exactly. Ryan merely twisted his ankle. It's not like he's dying. He's a grown man in perfectly good health. Why is everyone acting like this is some huge emergency? Put some ice on it and call it a day."

Joshua finally snapped, "Can you stop making Nathan sacrifice everything for Ryan?"

Their words made my throat tighten, as if an invisible hand was squeezing it.

But Emma ignored them completely. If anything, she only tried harder to pull me out of the car.

"Nathan, this is an emergency. Can you put that old-fashioned tradition aside just this once?"

"Emma, I don't want to." The sadness in my voice was impossible to miss.

She flinched as though my words had struck her, but it was only for a moment.

Her expression hardened, and her voice turned cold.

"Just do it, Nathan. I'll give you whatever you want in return. Okay?"

She paused before adding, "Ryan has always been in poor health. Even a minor injury could take him a long time to recover from."

I looked into her stubborn, worried eyes and gave a bitter laugh.

"Whatever I want?"

"Yes." Her voice was firm.

"Then we're done," I said.

  • My Fiancée's Wedding Detour   Chapter 9

Six months later, Audrey and I returned home.We brought our business partners from Westford with us to tour the company. As we were driving through an intersection, a man suddenly ran a red light and stepped into our path. The driver slammed on the brakes, but it was too late. We hit him. The driver immediately got out and rushed over to check on the man. After helping him to his feet, the man suddenly grabbed the driver and started laughing. "Emma! I like the suit you bought me!"He then announced, "I'm going to marry you! I don't have a home anymore. Can I come home with you?"No matter how hard the driver tried, the man refused to let go. The driver could only turn helplessly toward Audrey. "Call the police," Audrey said. "Let them handle this." But before the call could even connect, Ryan suddenly burst into laughter and bolted down the road."No! Don't! Don't let them take me away!"He glanced back over his shoulder, still laughing. "I'm a good boy! You don't wan

Ryan lay unconscious in the ICU. His mind drifted in and out of darkness, pulling him back to the day of his wedding. "Ryan, this is where I leave you." Emma had stepped out of the wedding car with her bridesmaids. Without saying another word, she slammed the door, got behind the wheel, and sped away. The moment Ryan heard her words, his heart clenched. He scrambled out of the car and ran after her, shouting at the top of his lungs. "Emma! I'm calling off the wedding! Take me with you! I'll marry you!" But Emma never stopped. All Ryan heard was the deafening roar of the engine as her car disappeared into the distance. Ryan turned back toward the wedding car, intending to grab his phone and call Emma. But before he could reach it, a woman stepped into his path. "Big Molly, move." Molly Dawson, the woman Ryan was supposed to marry that day, stood blocking his way. She was the wealthy daughter of a family that had made a fortune from a massive redevelopment payout.

The next day, Audrey and I went to the courthouse and made our marriage official. Meanwhile, my phone buzzed nonstop. When I finally checked it, I found message after message from Emma's best friends. Lena begged, "Nathan, please go see Emma. She's been unconscious ever since her surgery."Claire wrote, "Nathan, Emma keeps calling your name. Please, I'm begging you. Just go see her."Then Selena's message came through, furious and accusatory. "Nathan, Emma got into that accident because of you! Do you have a conscience? Can't you even go see her once?"Some pleaded with me, some blamed me, and others cursed me out. But I didn't care anymore. I removed my SIM card, walked into a phone store, and canceled the number for good. Audrey held my hand the entire time without saying a single word. On the drive home, though, we passed Ryan. He was still wearing the suit from the day before. It was filthy from head to toe, and the bandages around his ankles were caked with mud.

Roses bloomed wildly along both sides of the red carpet. With Audrey's arm linked through mine, I walked beside her, step by step, toward the altar. "Nathan, we had to put this together on short notice. We'll have a much bigger wedding later."I shook my head, smiling. "This is more than enough. I can tell how much thought you put into all of this." There weren't many people present. They were all close friends of Audrey's—people who had stood by her through thick and thin. As everyone looked on with warm smiles, Audrey pulled out a custom-made diamond ring. "Nathan, we've known each other since we were kids. After all these years, I finally get to stand here and be by your side for the rest of your life."For the longest time, all I wanted was to be the older sister you could always count on. The person you could run to whenever you needed a safe place. "But now, I'm asking you to let me be something more. Give me the chance to spend the rest of my life with you. Will y

Audrey glanced at me. "Nathan, get rid of all that old stuff. I brought you something better."Joshua reached into the back seat and pulled out a small case. The second he opened it, the custom-made jewelry inside caught the light, practically blinding us with its sparkle. "Nathan, you've got the whole package here," Joshua said. "Wedding clothes, jewelry—everything!"Walter let out a low whistle. "Damn, Audrey. You've got some serious money to throw around."Joshua laughed and slapped my shoulder. "Nathan, with a rich, gorgeous woman like Audrey chasing after you, why the hell did you waste all these years settling for that mess?"Before I could say a single word, my groomsmen started tossing my old clothes and accessories out of the convertible, piece by piece. As the car sped down the mountain road, I changed into the new suit and swapped out my old watch and accessories for the ones Audrey had brought. When I finally looked in the mirror, I could barely recognize myself.

I walked right past the people. The bridesmaids and Emma stood there, completely stunned. "What the hell?" Lena blurted.Claire stared after me. "He's really leaving."Emma froze for a second before finally snapping out of it. She rushed after me and grabbed my hand, a faint edge of panic creeping into her voice. "Nathan Cole, what the hell do you think you're doing?"I looked at her and said, "We're breaking up. It's exactly what it sounds like."She raised her voice. "Are you seriously doing this right now? Can't you see everyone's waiting for you?"I glanced back. 24 wedding cars stretched out behind us, but not a single person was waiting for me. "They're waiting for you," I said coldly. "They're waiting for you to walk your childhood sweetheart down this entire road, roll out the red carpet, set off the fireworks, and then wave goodbye as he leaves."Emma clenched her jaw, guilt written all over her face. For once, she had nothing to say. I pulled my hand free an
