Chapter 2

Autor: Faraway Galaxy
My mother, Willow Monet, paid me a visit on the fifth day. When she pushed open the door to my ward, I was leaning against the headboard, staring out the window.

The moment she laid eyes on me, her eyes misted over. "Why'd you lose so much weight?"

I flashed her a smile and reassured her I was fine; everyone went through the same thing after giving birth.

Mom didn't believe me. She threw off my covers to look at my incision, only to discover the gauze was completely soaked through with blood. In the blink of an eye, her tears spilled over, and she scrambled out the door to find a nurse.

I was helped into the examination room to be restitched. The moment the antiseptic touched my split-open skin and flesh, the pain made me inhale sharply, but I didn't make a sound.

Mom stood beside me, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "Has Craig been mistreating you?"

I didn't want her to worry. "No, Mom. He's sick, so he has his hands full."

Mom parted her lips, as if she wanted to tell me something, but she ultimately swallowed her words. "Your uncle will be arriving today. If you've been mistreated, tell him. He'll stand up for you."

I froze for a moment. My uncle, Winston Monet, was the CEO of Solas Group. In Hauston, if he so much as stomped his foot, the entire city would tremble.

Ever since I married into the Sinclair family, Uncle Winston and I hadn't been in contact. Mindful of not wanting to be a burden, I had never once asked him for help. However, this time, I feared I wouldn't be able to hold out on my own.

After Mom left to pick Uncle Winston up, I went to the restroom at the end of the corridor to wash my face. When I returned, the bassinet was empty.

"Where's my baby?" I asked the nurse anxiously.

Without looking up, the nurse responded, "Mr. Sinclair told me he was taking him over to his ward. He also said he wanted Verna to help take care of him."

My mind went blank. I spun on my heel and bolted toward Verna's ward, with Lyle hot on my heels. I had arranged for him to stay close by over the last few days, keeping watch.

The moment I flung the door open, I found Verna propped up against the pillows, her hospital gown partly unbuttoned as she breastfed Avery. Craig sat in the chair beside her, a faint smile playing on his lips.

I rushed over, ripping Avery straight out of Verna's arms. Jolted awake, he started crying at the top of his lungs.

Verna hurriedly covered her chest, tears welling up in her eyes in an instant.

"What do you think you're doing, Althea?" Craig rose to his feet, his expression hardening.

"Uncle Winston's here, and he wants to give the baby a welcome gift. So, I'll be taking him now." Holding Avery tightly, my voice was as cold as ice.

Craig frowned. "What's the rush? Vern's breasts are painfully engorged. Why can't you let our baby ease it for her?"

Ignoring him, I turned to leave.

The very next second, Verna dug her fingers into Avery's little arm, causing him to bawl his eyes out.

I shoved her away. "Did you just pinch my son?"

Verna recoiled, her waterworks turning on like a faucet. "No, I didn't... I only wanted to support him..."

Lyle had seen enough. He rushed forward, positioning himself between us. "Ma'am, the child is just a newborn; you can't—"

Before he could finish, two bodyguards stormed in through the door, tackling Lyle and pinning him to the ground.

Looking down at him with utter disdain, Craig sneered, "How dare a mere caregiver like you poke your nose into your employer's business?"

With that, he slapped Lyle thrice.

The latter's cheek puffed up in no time, blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.

"Unhand him!" I tried to yank the bodyguard away, but another one grabbed me by the shoulders, rendering me completely immobile.

"Send him to the police station," Craig ordered. "He's really picked the wrong person's child to mess with."

He pried Avery out of my arms. Avery was still in tears, the red marks on his arm striking against his pale skin.

Craig lowered his head to take a look at him and froze. He turned Avery over, peeled back his clothing to bare his shoulder, and realized he didn't have a birthmark.

"Where is it? Where the hell did the birthmark on his shoulder go?"

Craig and Verna's scandal went viral after full media coverage, dominating trending lists across all platforms. The public utterly detested Craig for being ungrateful, bigamous, for murdering his own child, and for plotting against his family. He became the poster boy for hypocritical, toxic men everywhere. Whenever strangers mentioned him, they did so with clenched teeth and undisguised disgust. On the day of the public trial, the gallery was packed to the brim. Countless people gathered outside the courthouse, demanding that Craig be punished to the fullest extent of the law. All the evidence was conclusive—the nurse's testimony, the couple's marriage certificate, and Verna's own confession—forming a complete chain of evidence. Craig had no way to defend himself and was ultimately sentenced to death. As his accomplice, Verna was sentenced to life imprisonment and deprived of her political rights for life. After the verdict was delivered, Craig was escorted by the bailiffs, re

A few days later, I went to the detention center with my lawyer. Verna was curled up in a corner in the cell. Her eyes were hollow and unfocused as she constantly muttered to herself, "My baby… I'm sorry… Craig, give me back my baby…"She was completely shattered by the grief of losing her child and Craig's betrayal. She had lost her mind, laughing one moment and crying the next. She no longer had any trace of the gentle facade she once wore. Craig immediately rose to his feet when he heard footsteps. He rushed to the iron bars, and the moment he saw me, hope instantly ignited in his eyes. He plastered an obsequious smile on his face, and he said in an utterly servile tone, "You're here, Thea! You're here to save me, aren't you? I knew it! You still have feelings for me!"Looking at his sycophantic demeanor, I felt nothing but endless ridicule. In my previous life, I had been deceived by this facade, and I'd paid the price with my life."Don't flatter yourself, Craig," I spat ou

The blood drained from Verna's face as she watched Craig throw her under the bus just to save his own skin. Like a madwoman, she lunged forward, grabbed Craig's clothes, and wailed, "Craig, you liar! You scumbag! How dare you pin everything on me? Who was the one who wouldn't leave me alone back then? Who swore they would cherish me for the rest of their life? "It was your idea to switch the babies. You were the one who killed Althea's child! How can you turn around and frame me now?""Shut the fuck up!" Craig roared, looking up with murderous eyes. He raised his hand and slapped Verna brutally across the face. "If you weren't such a shameless whore, I wouldn't be in this mess right now! This is all your fault!"Verna was knocked flat onto the ground, blood instantly trickling from her split lip. Clutching her cheek, she took in Craig's cold, heartless expression. The resentment she had bottled up for years completely exploded. With absolutely nothing left to lose, she decided to

Craig's expression stiffened as soon as he laid eyes on it. His voice died in his throat, and he stood rooted to the spot, as though he had been struck by lightning. Held tightly in my hand was a pristine white marriage certificate. Printed clearly upon it were Craig's and Verna's signatures. The registration date on it was a whole year before my own wedding to Craig! "Look closely, everyone! This is his legally binding marriage certificate. He's been legally married to Verna all along. Our marriage certificate was forged from the very beginning!" Holding the sheet of paper up in the air, my voice trembled, but it rang out across the room. "All this time, I thought I was his wife… but I was nothing but a smokescreen to cover up their shameful affair!"The room instantly exploded into an uproar. My relatives and friends could no longer contain themselves and stepped forward one after another to condemn him, their voices filled with rage. "How could you be so heartless, Craig? The

Craig whirled around in shock. Uncle Winston stood at the entrance with a grim face, an intimidating chill radiating from his entire body. Behind him were members of my family and dozens of towering, broad-shouldered bodyguards who instantly flooded the entire operating room, gridlocking it. The doctors and bodyguards present in the room were paralyzed with fear. The surgeon's hand trembled so violently that the scalpel slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly onto the tile floor. Craig's expression changed drastically. "Uncle Winston? What are you—"Uncle Winston stormed over to the operating table and immediately spotted me, drenched in blood and tied down. He whipped his head around and noticed Mom kneeling on the floor, half her face swollen, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth. His pupils contracted sharply, and he was absolutely livid. "Get a doctor in here, now!""Thea…" Uncle Winston carefully untied the restraints on my limbs. He scooped me up into his arms a

The bodyguards took turns raining slaps down on Mom from both sides. Blood began to trickle down her chin. Her hair fell loose, and half of her face swelled up beyond recognition. Yet, she gritted her teeth and didn't make a single sound. Mom was the widow of a martyr. After Dad died in the line of duty, she'd raised me all on her own, never bowing her head to a single soul. Yet here she was, forced to her knees, getting slapped like an animal.Like a madwoman, I charged forward, but two bodyguards grabbed me by the arms, rendering me completely immobile. "Craig, you son of a bitch! She's my mother; she is a martyr's widow! I'll make you rot in jail for the rest of your life!" Craig jeered. "What kind of storm could a widow whose husband is long dead possibly stir up? When the reporters arrive, I'll tell them your mother couldn't stand the loneliness and found herself and you a lover. I was merely defending my family's honor. Who could blame me?" He walked up to me, pinched my
