Chapter 3

Author: Poison Soul
The phone screen went dark automatically.

Olivia paid it no mind and gently patted Joshua's back. "Don't be upset, okay? It's all my fault. I shouldn't have brought you here to be disrespected like that. She might be my mother, but you don't owe it to me to take her toxic behavior. Yell at me if you need to, just as long as it makes you feel better."

All the way back, Olivia kept trying to soothe him.

Joshua simply closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep.

Notifications chimed in the background every so often. For the second half of the drive, Olivia was constantly replying to text messages.

When they pulled up to the house, Olivia looked at him with an apologetic expression. "Honey, something urgent came up at the office. Wait for me at home, okay? I'll make sure to get back early tonight."

Joshua got out of the car in silence.

Once Olivia drove off, he accepted Damien's follow request. Then, he tapped straight into his profile.

Pinned at the very top was a post with two photos.

The first was a picture of Olivia from behind as she planted roses. The second was a sprawling field of vibrant blue roses.

The caption read, "Since someone planted my absolute favorite blue roses, I'll forgive you just this once. Now come over and make it up to me."

Joshua felt a suffocating tightness in his chest.

So it was Damien who loved blue. Even the rose garden hadn't been planted for him.

He hailed a cab and went straight to the estate.

The moment he arrived, Joshua spotted Olivia's red supercar.

Not far away, right in front of the sea of roses, Olivia stood with her back to Joshua, completely unaware of his presence.

"If Joshua weren't infertile, I wouldn't have come looking for you in the first place. He's my bottom line. You showed up in front of him, and now you're throwing a tantrum?"

Damien's eyes welled up with tears. "Then why did you come to see me? Why don't you just leave me alone?"

"Stop crying." Olivia softened her tone. "As long as you behave, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."

Damien pulled her into an embrace with a smile. "I can be even more well-behaved, if that's what you like."

"I cleared out my whole afternoon. Do you really need to ask what I want?"

Olivia let out a bright smile. Damien leaned down to kiss her before scooping her up into his arms and carrying her inside the villa with desperate urgency.

As he pulled the front door shut, he cast a provocative smirk toward Joshua. He had actually noticed him long ago.

Through the window, tangled silhouettes swayed and shifted.

Standing by the roadside, Joshua watched with a self-torturing intensity. Even his breath turned icy cold.

It felt as though a barbed hook was ripping through his heart, dragging out bloody gashes with every single beat.

"You're here to check out the place too, right? Ms. Peterson and her husband have been together for so many years and still love each other this much. It's truly enviable."

A woman taking pictures nearby struck up a conversation with a smile. "Mr. Bennett must have saved the universe in his past life. Every man would want a wife like Ms. Peterson."

Joshua smiled until tears welled in his eyes. "Except he doesn't want her anymore."

Olivia had gifted him an estate that was supposed to prove her exclusive love for him, only to mess around with another man right here.

The woman looked closer at Joshua and froze. It was no surprise others could mistake them.

Damien looked eerily like Joshua when he was 26, back when he first met Olivia.

"I guess no matter if it's a man or a woman, money changes people the same way." The woman seemed to realize something, her expression dimming.

"Honestly, Ms. Peterson is still pretty decent compared to most. Even her side piece was chosen to look just like you. She's probably just looking for a little temporary excitement. Why not just let it go? Pretend you don't know anything, go back home, and keep living your life like normal."

"It's not the same." Joshua's voice was barely a whisper.

The fact that Olivia found a man who looked like him didn't make him feel grateful. It only made him feel utterly disgusted.

Leaving the rose garden behind, Joshua went straight to the hospital. He walked through the process according to the fake death agreement, picked up his antidepressant preion, and went home.

He set the pills on the coffee table and stared at them in a daze for a long time, practically drowned in bitterness.

The front door suddenly burst open. Olivia rushed in disheveled and frantic, stumbling so hard she knocked over a chair.

She scanned him up and down, her face pale as a sheet. "Honey, why did you go to the hospital?"

It couldn't possibly be what he was thinking, could it?And yet, in reality, it was precisely that.Joshua could hardly imagine how someone as sweet and gentle as Clara could compile so many schemes, all aimed at trying to tempt him into an affair.Amused and exasperated, he kept turning the pages until his eyes suddenly froze on an entry."Better not. He'd be heartbroken."Joshua's heart skipped a beat."To be honest, a month ago when she brought us here to show us this stuff, we were even more shocked than you."Richard shrugged. "Talk about not knowing what goes on in someone's head. My family actually suspected she might be a total creep…"Joshua couldn't help but laugh out loud."Still, I know she's head over heels. She's been in love with you for 12 long years. Since none of us can stop her, we figured we might as well let her have her wish."Also, I'm really sorry about that morning call, Joshua. I genuinely had no idea you two were together. I apologize for raising a

Those casual words made Olivia's eyes flush crimson in an instant."We were together for so many years. Can't you just forgive me this once?" she asked."Sure. I forgive you."Never expecting Joshua to say that, Olivia froze in place, but a sudden brilliance burst in her eyes."As long as you can accept me seeing other women from now on. While I'm with you, I'll be texting her and liking her posts on social media."I'll slip out while you're asleep to spend the entire night with her. I might even have a child with her and expect you to help me raise it."With every single word Joshua uttered, the color drained further from Olivia's face.Just listening to him talk made her feel like she was having a complete breakdown."Can you accept that?"Olivia shook her head instinctively. "Joshua, I can't…""So tell me, what right do you have to ask for my forgiveness? If you want my love, you have to trade the exact same loyalty for it. Otherwise, you're not worthy."Joshua watched he

Joshua pressed his lips together. The elevator doors slid open, and Clara took a few steps out before turning back to look at him. "Is something wrong?"Joshua tucked his phone away and followed her out.Their rooms were directly across from each other. Joshua unlocked his door but didn't step inside right away."Clara, do you want to come in and sit for a bit?"Joshua turned around to face her. "What I meant was… do you want to give us a try?"While Clara stood there completely stunned, Joshua's mind cleared up as well.Just as he was about to speak, Clara beat him to it. "Yes!"She took a quick step forward and closed the door behind her.Her eyes shone with a brilliant light, as if she had just stumbled upon the most precious treasure in the world. Tiptoeing up, she pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. "Joshua, you're not allowed to regret this."His heart skipped a beat. A flicker of panic rose in his chest, yet he didn't hesitate for a second. "I won't regret it."Clara s

"I won't marry you. Because… you disgust me," Joshua said.Olivia snapped awake in horror, rushing frantically into the bathroom to scrub her skin over and over again. She nearly scraped a layer of skin off.Her eyes were completely bloodshot as she muttered incoherently, "Honey, I washed myself clean. I'm not dirty anymore. I swear I'm clean."I even threw up all the food I ate. Please don't be disgusted by me. I'll go tell them right now. No one else will ever come here again."It took a full half-hour before Olivia finally stepped out.Taking in her pitiful state, Patricia made a move to step inside, but Olivia immediately blocked her path. "Don't come in. Joshua doesn't like you. I have to guard his things here for him. I can't upset him again."Despair filled Patricia. She sat down right at the doorstep since she wasn't allowed inside."If I can't stop you, then I'll just stay here and keep you company. Seeing you like this breaks my heart. Joshua said, "You seem to have forgotten that I gave you plenty of chances. You were the one who blew it every single time."Olivia's voice trembled. "Honey… I really know I was wrong.""So what?"Joshua let out a cold laugh. "Can you bring our baby back to life? Can you act like you didn't sleep with Damien? From the moment I left, I never intended to turn back. Olivia, you disgust me."Joshua turned to Patricia. "Five minutes are up. Excuse me.""No… Don't go! Honey, we've been together for so many years. You can't do this…"As Joshua stepped out the door, her tearful, desperate begging was left completely behind.Patricia let out a heavy sigh. "Olivia, he's gone."Those three words were like a death sentence pronounced on Olivia. The light in her eyes died completely, but in the next second, she suddenly bolted toward the door. The yanked-out IV needle sprayed a fine line of blood, yet she seemed entirely numb to the pain. Her body, however, had long passed its absolute l

The line remained dead silent.Olivia's tone sank into an even deeper, fragile humility. "I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have lied to you. Damien and I are completely over, and I lost the baby."Honey, please give me one last chance. I really can't live without you. As long as you're willing to turn back, I'll pay whatever price it takes."Still, no response came from the other side."Honey, please don't—"Olivia's voice trembled uncontrollably. Before she could even finish her sentence, the call was abruptly cut off.Panicked, she redialed frantically, only to find herself blocked. An endless despair enveloped her, making it hard to breathe.Just then, Patricia's call came through."Mom, can you… please help me find him? I miss him so much, but he won't take my calls anymore…"Patricia's throat felt tightly constricted.Olivia was such a proud woman. If she hadn't been pushed to absolute rock bottom, she would never beg like this."Why don't we just let it go? Please, st
