Chapter 4

Author: Poison Soul
Joshua's medical card was linked to Olivia's phone number, so the notification for his doctor's appointment had gone straight to her phone as well.

"Honey, say something! You're scaring me."

Joshua passed the bag of medication over to her. "The doctor suggested I try a new preion. He said it might improve our chances of conceiving."

"As long as you're okay. You nearly scared me out of my mind." Olivia put the preion bag onto the coffee table without giving it so much as a glance.

A sharp pain pierced Joshua's chest.

In the past, no matter what medication he was prescribed, she would carefully read every line of the instructions, afraid of the side effects.

She used to say that while she couldn't share the physical pain of his treatments, she had to remind herself of everything he was suffering for her sake.

And now, when he handed her antidepressant medication right to her face, she didn't even bother to look.

The heavy smell of tobacco mixed with the overpowering scent of roses, making Joshua sick to his stomach.

He clutched his abdomen, wincing in discomfort.

"Is your gastritis flaring up again?" Olivia leaned in close, reaching out to massage his stomach.

Joshua swatted her hand away instantly. "The smell on you is nauseating."

Olivia sniffed her clothes and let out a soft laugh. "It must be the rose scent. I'm just so focused on making our fifth anniversary perfect that I've been running back and forth to the rose garden all day. I'll go take a shower and change right away."

Yet earlier today, she had explicitly claimed she was heading to the office.

Joshua didn't even bother calling her out. He just offered a flat, "Okay."

Once Olivia left, he picked up his phone.

Over the past five years, his entire social circle had revolved around Olivia. He didn't have a single friend of his own left.

So there weren't many people Joshua needed to say goodbye to. There was only his younger sister, Jessica Bennett, his last remaining family.

Yet as he brought up her contact number, he couldn't bring himself to press call.

Jessica had always been exceptionally close to Olivia, and he worried that reaching out now might complicate things.

He decided it would be better to tell her right before he left.

That night, Olivia lay by his side, gently rubbing his stomach to ease his discomfort. "Honey, I cleared my schedule for the next two days. Every time your stomach flares up, it takes a couple of days to recover. I just feel uneasy leaving you at home alone."

Joshua gave a distracted hum, not taking her words seriously.

In the middle of the night, Joshua was awakened by the ping of a phone notification.

"I'm so sorry. Did I wake you? There are just a few work details I need to hand off. I'll put my phone on silent now," Olivia said apologetically. "Go back to sleep, honey."

Joshua kept his eyes closed, but any trace of sleep had completely vanished.

While her left hand gently massaged his stomach, Olivia still managed to free up her right to reply to messages.

The warmth radiating from her fingertips, punctuated by her occasional, suppressed giggles, felt like a dull blade carving slowly into his flesh.

"Honey?" came her quiet, testing whisper.

Just as she hoped, Joshua didn't answer.

Olivia slipped her hand away and tiptoed out of the room. Her hushed steps betrayed her desperate eagerness.

"Sending me those kinds of photos, huh? Just you wait. I'm going to drain you dry tonight."

The moment the door clicked shut, Joshua's phone vibrated multiple times with texts from Damien.

"Olivia couldn't get enough of me all afternoon, and now she says she wants to try new positions with me tonight. Even though I went easy on her for the sake of the baby, she still seems completely wild for me. Mr. Bennett, are you getting too old to satisfy Olivia?

"I honestly feel pretty sorry for you. I got Olivia pregnant on our very first try, while you spent four long years in treatment only to end up watching your wife carry another man's child."

In the heated master bedroom, Joshua felt a bone-chilling cold settle over him.

He got up to fetch a hot water bottle before pulling himself back into bed.

He was eight years older than Olivia. From the moment he fell in love with her, he had always felt like he owed her more than he could ever give.

For the past five years, he had loved her with everything he had.

He used to regret meeting her so late in life, feeling that the time they had left was far too short.

But now, with only five days remaining, every single minute felt agonizingly endless.

It couldn't possibly be what he was thinking, could it?And yet, in reality, it was precisely that.Joshua could hardly imagine how someone as sweet and gentle as Clara could compile so many schemes, all aimed at trying to tempt him into an affair.Amused and exasperated, he kept turning the pages until his eyes suddenly froze on an entry."Better not. He'd be heartbroken."Joshua's heart skipped a beat."To be honest, a month ago when she brought us here to show us this stuff, we were even more shocked than you."Richard shrugged. "Talk about not knowing what goes on in someone's head. My family actually suspected she might be a total creep…"Joshua couldn't help but laugh out loud."Still, I know she's head over heels. She's been in love with you for 12 long years. Since none of us can stop her, we figured we might as well let her have her wish."Also, I'm really sorry about that morning call, Joshua. I genuinely had no idea you two were together. I apologize for raising a

Those casual words made Olivia's eyes flush crimson in an instant."We were together for so many years. Can't you just forgive me this once?" she asked."Sure. I forgive you."Never expecting Joshua to say that, Olivia froze in place, but a sudden brilliance burst in her eyes."As long as you can accept me seeing other women from now on. While I'm with you, I'll be texting her and liking her posts on social media."I'll slip out while you're asleep to spend the entire night with her. I might even have a child with her and expect you to help me raise it."With every single word Joshua uttered, the color drained further from Olivia's face.Just listening to him talk made her feel like she was having a complete breakdown."Can you accept that?"Olivia shook her head instinctively. "Joshua, I can't…""So tell me, what right do you have to ask for my forgiveness? If you want my love, you have to trade the exact same loyalty for it. Otherwise, you're not worthy."Joshua watched he

Joshua pressed his lips together. The elevator doors slid open, and Clara took a few steps out before turning back to look at him. "Is something wrong?"Joshua tucked his phone away and followed her out.Their rooms were directly across from each other. Joshua unlocked his door but didn't step inside right away."Clara, do you want to come in and sit for a bit?"Joshua turned around to face her. "What I meant was… do you want to give us a try?"While Clara stood there completely stunned, Joshua's mind cleared up as well.Just as he was about to speak, Clara beat him to it. "Yes!"She took a quick step forward and closed the door behind her.Her eyes shone with a brilliant light, as if she had just stumbled upon the most precious treasure in the world. Tiptoeing up, she pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. "Joshua, you're not allowed to regret this."His heart skipped a beat. A flicker of panic rose in his chest, yet he didn't hesitate for a second. "I won't regret it."Clara s

"I won't marry you. Because… you disgust me," Joshua said.Olivia snapped awake in horror, rushing frantically into the bathroom to scrub her skin over and over again. She nearly scraped a layer of skin off.Her eyes were completely bloodshot as she muttered incoherently, "Honey, I washed myself clean. I'm not dirty anymore. I swear I'm clean."I even threw up all the food I ate. Please don't be disgusted by me. I'll go tell them right now. No one else will ever come here again."It took a full half-hour before Olivia finally stepped out.Taking in her pitiful state, Patricia made a move to step inside, but Olivia immediately blocked her path. "Don't come in. Joshua doesn't like you. I have to guard his things here for him. I can't upset him again."Despair filled Patricia. She sat down right at the doorstep since she wasn't allowed inside."If I can't stop you, then I'll just stay here and keep you company. Seeing you like this breaks my heart. Joshua said, "You seem to have forgotten that I gave you plenty of chances. You were the one who blew it every single time."Olivia's voice trembled. "Honey… I really know I was wrong.""So what?"Joshua let out a cold laugh. "Can you bring our baby back to life? Can you act like you didn't sleep with Damien? From the moment I left, I never intended to turn back. Olivia, you disgust me."Joshua turned to Patricia. "Five minutes are up. Excuse me.""No… Don't go! Honey, we've been together for so many years. You can't do this…"As Joshua stepped out the door, her tearful, desperate begging was left completely behind.Patricia let out a heavy sigh. "Olivia, he's gone."Those three words were like a death sentence pronounced on Olivia. The light in her eyes died completely, but in the next second, she suddenly bolted toward the door. The yanked-out IV needle sprayed a fine line of blood, yet she seemed entirely numb to the pain. Her body, however, had long passed its absolute l

The line remained dead silent.Olivia's tone sank into an even deeper, fragile humility. "I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have lied to you. Damien and I are completely over, and I lost the baby."Honey, please give me one last chance. I really can't live without you. As long as you're willing to turn back, I'll pay whatever price it takes."Still, no response came from the other side."Honey, please don't—"Olivia's voice trembled uncontrollably. Before she could even finish her sentence, the call was abruptly cut off.Panicked, she redialed frantically, only to find herself blocked. An endless despair enveloped her, making it hard to breathe.Just then, Patricia's call came through."Mom, can you… please help me find him? I miss him so much, but he won't take my calls anymore…"Patricia's throat felt tightly constricted.Olivia was such a proud woman. If she hadn't been pushed to absolute rock bottom, she would never beg like this."Why don't we just let it go? Please, st
