Chapter 7

Author: Poison Soul
Jessica replied, "Olivia went to warm up some milk for you. She said you just recovered from your gastritis and can't have anything cold. Honestly, where else could you ever find a wife as good as her? I'll go grab two more bottles of wine and rush her along while I'm at it."

Joshua clenched his fists, a sharp ache twisting in his chest.

How many times had Jessica lied to him to be able to pull it off without so much as flinching?

He couldn't stay here a second longer. "I'm tired. I'm heading back."

"Wait, let me get Olivia."

Joshua fixed his gaze on Jessica. "Don't bother. I don't want to spoil her fun."

Reading the look on his face, Jessica felt a prick of guilt. "Let me call you a ride, then."

Before getting into the car, Joshua stole one last glance at his little sister he had raised with his own hands.

Jessica darted her eyes away nervously. "What's wrong, Joshua?"

Without a word, Joshua looked away and pulled the door shut.

The moment he got home, Olivia called. "Why'd you leave without telling me? You just recovered from your gastritis. How could I feel at ease leaving you on your own?"

At the exact same time, a message from Damien popped up on his phone. "Was your first time on this bed too? She said you're way too vanilla and barely knew more than two positions. No wonder she was so starved after spending two days with you. She nearly drained me dry."

Back when they were dating, their age gap had always been a lingering worry for Joshua.

Afraid she was too young and might regret it later, he had held back even in the heat of passion.

He had wanted to leave her a way out.

On their wedding night, with no reason left to restrain himself, he had still put her comfort first. He was gentle with her, cherishing her every moment.

The moment he finally made her his, his eyes welled up with pure bliss. She had wept, too. "Honey, I'm finally yours. I love you more than anything in the world. I promise you'll never regret marrying me."

Yet here he was, overflowing with regret.

Over the line, Olivia called his name a few more times, sounding tentative.

Joshua covered his mouth tightly, choked up so badly he couldn't squeeze out a single word.

"Must be a bad connection. Don't worry, Olivia. I booked the ride myself, and the app says Joshua's home safe." Jessica's voice drifted in from the background.

"Go spend time with Damien. I'll send Joshua a text in a bit."

"Be careful. Don't slip up," Olivia said.

Jessica let out a soft laugh. "Joshua would never suspect me. Besides, he's the one with the problem. How could he have the nerve to stop you from having a baby with someone else?"

"Jessica!" Olivia snapped. "Don't you dare talk about Joshua like that!"

"Fine, fine, I'll shut up."

The call was cut off.

Jessica's message arrived right on schedule. "It's not often Olivia gets to come out, so she said she'd stay with me a bit longer. I'll have her stay over at our place tonight. Don't worry, Joshua. She's in good hands with me."

Then came Olivia's text. "Honey, go to sleep early if you're tired. Jessica just landed her first big deal, so I'm staying up to celebrate with her. Don't wait up for me."

Joshua didn't reply to a single word.

In that instant, the storm of emotions raging inside him suddenly died down into absolute calm.

He wiped the tears from his eyes.

He wasn't going to wait anymore.

People who weren't worth it didn't deserve his time. Not her, and certainly not Jessica.

He got up and went to the bedroom, leaving all the mess behind, and slept peacefully through the night.

On the morning of their wedding anniversary, Olivia prepared a special breakfast for him with love. "Honey, you'll get to see the fireworks I set up for you tonight."

Joshua offered a faint smile, saying nothing.

"I'll head to the office first and catch the show with you tonight."

Just as she stood up, Joshua pulled the pre-signed divorce papers out of the drawer and slid them across the table. "Sign it."

It couldn't possibly be what he was thinking, could it?And yet, in reality, it was precisely that.Joshua could hardly imagine how someone as sweet and gentle as Clara could compile so many schemes, all aimed at trying to tempt him into an affair.Amused and exasperated, he kept turning the pages until his eyes suddenly froze on an entry."Better not. He'd be heartbroken."Joshua's heart skipped a beat."To be honest, a month ago when she brought us here to show us this stuff, we were even more shocked than you."Richard shrugged. "Talk about not knowing what goes on in someone's head. My family actually suspected she might be a total creep…"Joshua couldn't help but laugh out loud."Still, I know she's head over heels. She's been in love with you for 12 long years. Since none of us can stop her, we figured we might as well let her have her wish."Also, I'm really sorry about that morning call, Joshua. I genuinely had no idea you two were together. I apologize for raising a

Those casual words made Olivia's eyes flush crimson in an instant."We were together for so many years. Can't you just forgive me this once?" she asked."Sure. I forgive you."Never expecting Joshua to say that, Olivia froze in place, but a sudden brilliance burst in her eyes."As long as you can accept me seeing other women from now on. While I'm with you, I'll be texting her and liking her posts on social media."I'll slip out while you're asleep to spend the entire night with her. I might even have a child with her and expect you to help me raise it."With every single word Joshua uttered, the color drained further from Olivia's face.Just listening to him talk made her feel like she was having a complete breakdown."Can you accept that?"Olivia shook her head instinctively. "Joshua, I can't…""So tell me, what right do you have to ask for my forgiveness? If you want my love, you have to trade the exact same loyalty for it. Otherwise, you're not worthy."Joshua watched he

Joshua pressed his lips together. The elevator doors slid open, and Clara took a few steps out before turning back to look at him. "Is something wrong?"Joshua tucked his phone away and followed her out.Their rooms were directly across from each other. Joshua unlocked his door but didn't step inside right away."Clara, do you want to come in and sit for a bit?"Joshua turned around to face her. "What I meant was… do you want to give us a try?"While Clara stood there completely stunned, Joshua's mind cleared up as well.Just as he was about to speak, Clara beat him to it. "Yes!"She took a quick step forward and closed the door behind her.Her eyes shone with a brilliant light, as if she had just stumbled upon the most precious treasure in the world. Tiptoeing up, she pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. "Joshua, you're not allowed to regret this."His heart skipped a beat. A flicker of panic rose in his chest, yet he didn't hesitate for a second. "I won't regret it."Clara s

"I won't marry you. Because… you disgust me," Joshua said.Olivia snapped awake in horror, rushing frantically into the bathroom to scrub her skin over and over again. She nearly scraped a layer of skin off.Her eyes were completely bloodshot as she muttered incoherently, "Honey, I washed myself clean. I'm not dirty anymore. I swear I'm clean."I even threw up all the food I ate. Please don't be disgusted by me. I'll go tell them right now. No one else will ever come here again."It took a full half-hour before Olivia finally stepped out.Taking in her pitiful state, Patricia made a move to step inside, but Olivia immediately blocked her path. "Don't come in. Joshua doesn't like you. I have to guard his things here for him. I can't upset him again."Despair filled Patricia. She sat down right at the doorstep since she wasn't allowed inside."If I can't stop you, then I'll just stay here and keep you company. Seeing you like this breaks my heart. Joshua said, "You seem to have forgotten that I gave you plenty of chances. You were the one who blew it every single time."Olivia's voice trembled. "Honey… I really know I was wrong.""So what?"Joshua let out a cold laugh. "Can you bring our baby back to life? Can you act like you didn't sleep with Damien? From the moment I left, I never intended to turn back. Olivia, you disgust me."Joshua turned to Patricia. "Five minutes are up. Excuse me.""No… Don't go! Honey, we've been together for so many years. You can't do this…"As Joshua stepped out the door, her tearful, desperate begging was left completely behind.Patricia let out a heavy sigh. "Olivia, he's gone."Those three words were like a death sentence pronounced on Olivia. The light in her eyes died completely, but in the next second, she suddenly bolted toward the door. The yanked-out IV needle sprayed a fine line of blood, yet she seemed entirely numb to the pain. Her body, however, had long passed its absolute l

The line remained dead silent.Olivia's tone sank into an even deeper, fragile humility. "I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have lied to you. Damien and I are completely over, and I lost the baby."Honey, please give me one last chance. I really can't live without you. As long as you're willing to turn back, I'll pay whatever price it takes."Still, no response came from the other side."Honey, please don't—"Olivia's voice trembled uncontrollably. Before she could even finish her sentence, the call was abruptly cut off.Panicked, she redialed frantically, only to find herself blocked. An endless despair enveloped her, making it hard to breathe.Just then, Patricia's call came through."Mom, can you… please help me find him? I miss him so much, but he won't take my calls anymore…"Patricia's throat felt tightly constricted.Olivia was such a proud woman. If she hadn't been pushed to absolute rock bottom, she would never beg like this."Why don't we just let it go? Please, st
