Chapter 8

Author: Poison Soul
The divorce agreement was opened to the signature page. Olivia signed it without a second thought the second it was handed to her.

"Aren't you going to read it first?" Joshua asked.

"Isn't it just about adjusting your treatment plan? Honey, whatever you think is best works for me. I trust your call entirely."

Watching her walk out the door, Joshua couldn't help but laugh out loud.

He laughed at how every word out of her mouth was still supposedly for his sake.

He picked up the preion bag that had sat on the coffee table for six whole days and tossed it into the trash.

He had given her so many chances, yet she hadn't caught on even once.

Joshua packed his luggage and headed to the hospital alone.

The diagnosis confirmed his worsening depression, and the doctor increased his dosage. This was the final preparation before his fake death.

Before leaving the hospital, Joshua made a point to express his gratitude to the doctor who had treated him for four long years.

"You and your wife will surely have a child of your own soon, but please make sure you don't take random medications again this time. Otherwise, all your progress will be wiped out."

Joshua froze. The only thing he had ever taken was the herbal medicine Patricia sent over.

"It goes for your wife, too. Tell her not to fall for those home remedies to keep the baby safe. It was truly a tragedy to suffer a stillbirth at seven months."

The doctor sighed softly.

"Are you saying… my abnormal lab results and my wife's previous stillbirth… were both caused by drinking the wrong herbal medicine?"

Joshua's throat felt dry, and each word was painfully difficult to get out.

The doctor frowned. "Yes. Didn't Ms. Peterson tell you?"

So she knew, too.

A loud buzzing hummed through Joshua's ears.

When Olivia was pregnant the first time, Patricia had sent over prenatal herbal brews every single week.

Joshua hadn't dared let her drink them, but Olivia always drank them in secret whenever he wasn't around.

She had said she couldn't let her mother's efforts go to waste.

For four long years, he had thought that the stillbirth and forced induction were entirely his fault.

He had tried every possible regimen time after time, only to meet failure every single time.

All the while, Olivia had watched him drown in guilt and self-blame day after day.

She had told him it didn't matter if they never had children, reassuring him it wasn't his fault.

Yet not once did she ever tell him that he truly wasn't to blame.

"Mr. Bennett, are you alright?"

Joshua took the tissue the doctor handed him, only then realizing that tears were streaming down his face.

"I'm fine. Thank you." Joshua's voice was raspy.

He was thanking the doctor for looking after him for four years, but above all, for finally telling him the truth.

As Joshua stepped out of the consultation room, his feet abruptly froze in place.

Not far away, Damien was walking side-by-side with Olivia out of the OB-GYN department.

"Olivia, I get so nervous every time I accompany you to these pregnancy checkups."

Olivia's face was filled with smiles as she pulled his hand over to rest on her belly. "Tell Daddy not to worry, baby. Our little one is doing amazing. Every single test marker passed with flying colors."

Damien pulled her into his arms, his eyes locking directly with Joshua's across the hallway.

Damien let out a smile, his expression full of smug pride. He deliberately raised his voice as he asked, "Can you stay over and keep me company tonight?"

Olivia fell silent.

"You have plenty of anniversaries to watch fireworks with him. But our baby just turned three months old today. It's an exceptionally important milestone for both the baby and me… Olivia, I really don't want to be alone."

After a long pause, Olivia finally gave in. "Alright."

"I knew you were the best."

As Joshua watched them leave, his eyes turned icy cold.

The trending story had been pinned for 22 days straight.

The entire city was waiting to watch the spectacular fireworks show Olivia was hosting for him at 7:00 pm tonight.

Olivia knew about that, but she still chose to leave Joshua behind alone anyway.

A text from the fake-death organization flashed on his phone. "Mr. Bennett, everything is set and in place."

Joshua threw his newly prescribed pills into the trash can and sent one final text to Olivia. "The surprise I prepared for you is ready."

Olivia would find out very soon that her husband was going to die tonight, and she was the one who sent him off on his final journey.

Joshua switched off his phone, handed it to the courier, and wrote down the address of the Peterson residence.

At 7:00 pm sharp, vibrant blue fireworks exploded across the sky right on time, dazzling and bright, illuminating half the night.

Amidst waves of distant cheers, Joshua dragged his suitcase away without looking back.

It couldn't possibly be what he was thinking, could it?And yet, in reality, it was precisely that.Joshua could hardly imagine how someone as sweet and gentle as Clara could compile so many schemes, all aimed at trying to tempt him into an affair.Amused and exasperated, he kept turning the pages until his eyes suddenly froze on an entry."Better not. He'd be heartbroken."Joshua's heart skipped a beat."To be honest, a month ago when she brought us here to show us this stuff, we were even more shocked than you."Richard shrugged. "Talk about not knowing what goes on in someone's head. My family actually suspected she might be a total creep…"Joshua couldn't help but laugh out loud."Still, I know she's head over heels. She's been in love with you for 12 long years. Since none of us can stop her, we figured we might as well let her have her wish."Also, I'm really sorry about that morning call, Joshua. I genuinely had no idea you two were together. I apologize for raising a

Those casual words made Olivia's eyes flush crimson in an instant."We were together for so many years. Can't you just forgive me this once?" she asked."Sure. I forgive you."Never expecting Joshua to say that, Olivia froze in place, but a sudden brilliance burst in her eyes."As long as you can accept me seeing other women from now on. While I'm with you, I'll be texting her and liking her posts on social media."I'll slip out while you're asleep to spend the entire night with her. I might even have a child with her and expect you to help me raise it."With every single word Joshua uttered, the color drained further from Olivia's face.Just listening to him talk made her feel like she was having a complete breakdown."Can you accept that?"Olivia shook her head instinctively. "Joshua, I can't…""So tell me, what right do you have to ask for my forgiveness? If you want my love, you have to trade the exact same loyalty for it. Otherwise, you're not worthy."Joshua watched he

Joshua pressed his lips together. The elevator doors slid open, and Clara took a few steps out before turning back to look at him. "Is something wrong?"Joshua tucked his phone away and followed her out.Their rooms were directly across from each other. Joshua unlocked his door but didn't step inside right away."Clara, do you want to come in and sit for a bit?"Joshua turned around to face her. "What I meant was… do you want to give us a try?"While Clara stood there completely stunned, Joshua's mind cleared up as well.Just as he was about to speak, Clara beat him to it. "Yes!"She took a quick step forward and closed the door behind her.Her eyes shone with a brilliant light, as if she had just stumbled upon the most precious treasure in the world. Tiptoeing up, she pressed a gentle kiss to his lips. "Joshua, you're not allowed to regret this."His heart skipped a beat. A flicker of panic rose in his chest, yet he didn't hesitate for a second. "I won't regret it."Clara s

"I won't marry you. Because… you disgust me," Joshua said.Olivia snapped awake in horror, rushing frantically into the bathroom to scrub her skin over and over again. She nearly scraped a layer of skin off.Her eyes were completely bloodshot as she muttered incoherently, "Honey, I washed myself clean. I'm not dirty anymore. I swear I'm clean."I even threw up all the food I ate. Please don't be disgusted by me. I'll go tell them right now. No one else will ever come here again."It took a full half-hour before Olivia finally stepped out.Taking in her pitiful state, Patricia made a move to step inside, but Olivia immediately blocked her path. "Don't come in. Joshua doesn't like you. I have to guard his things here for him. I can't upset him again."Despair filled Patricia. She sat down right at the doorstep since she wasn't allowed inside."If I can't stop you, then I'll just stay here and keep you company. Seeing you like this breaks my heart. Joshua said, "You seem to have forgotten that I gave you plenty of chances. You were the one who blew it every single time."Olivia's voice trembled. "Honey… I really know I was wrong.""So what?"Joshua let out a cold laugh. "Can you bring our baby back to life? Can you act like you didn't sleep with Damien? From the moment I left, I never intended to turn back. Olivia, you disgust me."Joshua turned to Patricia. "Five minutes are up. Excuse me.""No… Don't go! Honey, we've been together for so many years. You can't do this…"As Joshua stepped out the door, her tearful, desperate begging was left completely behind.Patricia let out a heavy sigh. "Olivia, he's gone."Those three words were like a death sentence pronounced on Olivia. The light in her eyes died completely, but in the next second, she suddenly bolted toward the door. The yanked-out IV needle sprayed a fine line of blood, yet she seemed entirely numb to the pain. Her body, however, had long passed its absolute l

The line remained dead silent.Olivia's tone sank into an even deeper, fragile humility. "I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have lied to you. Damien and I are completely over, and I lost the baby."Honey, please give me one last chance. I really can't live without you. As long as you're willing to turn back, I'll pay whatever price it takes."Still, no response came from the other side."Honey, please don't—"Olivia's voice trembled uncontrollably. Before she could even finish her sentence, the call was abruptly cut off.Panicked, she redialed frantically, only to find herself blocked. An endless despair enveloped her, making it hard to breathe.Just then, Patricia's call came through."Mom, can you… please help me find him? I miss him so much, but he won't take my calls anymore…"Patricia's throat felt tightly constricted.Olivia was such a proud woman. If she hadn't been pushed to absolute rock bottom, she would never beg like this."Why don't we just let it go? Please, st
